Medieval Books
Before the introduction of print
ing into Europe in the 15th century,
books were hand-printed and bound
by monks in monasteries which
were centers of culture and en
| lightenment in the middle ages.
These early books, often beautifully
illuminated, were devotional in char
acter, used in church services or
sometimes as gifts to famous per
‘ sonages.

Atomic Energy
Atomic energy is not likely to pow
er locomotives on American rail
roads in the near future, because of
the necessity for providing large and
heavy shields around the source of
energy. Maintenance work on such
equipment might have to be de
fen ed as long as 30 to 50 years,
because of the radioactivity of the
atomic energy material.

After the next heavy rain, take a walk
Ai around your farm and look for signs of fresh
erosion. If you find evidence of washing
between crop rows, silt deposits at the bot
tom of the slope, streams running dark with the color of
your soil . . , your farm can benefit from a new method
of runoff water control. *
Terracing, contouring and strip cropping slows the pace of
runoff water, allowing the soil to soak up abundant mois
ture for future plant growth. These “eaves troughs”
gently route excess water to lower levels, leaving valuable
topsoil where it belongs.
Your farm tractor and moldboard plow, disc plow or tiller
disc are your basic equipment for soil building. Allis
Chalmers is cooperating with soil conservation officials in
demonstrating methods of terracing, strip cropping, con
structing ponds, reservoirs and waterways with your
regular farm equipment.
Ask us for the Allis Chalmers handbook “You Have What
It Takes To Contour and Terrace.”
