Remove Peaches,
Growers Advised
Because of the heavy carry
over of Curculio and Brown Rot [
attacking peaches this year in
many Georgia orchards, it is j
more important thafi ever that
every possible effort be made at
orchard sanitation, J. E. Webb,
Entomologist for the Georgia De
partment of Entomology, has
pointed out.
This means careful aflcr-har-i
vest clean up to remove every |
mummied and left-over peach
from the orchard, both from the |
tree and the ground. These!
should not be harrowed into the
soil, where the Brown Rot or
ganisms will be preserved as a]
source of infestation for the 1947 |
crop, but should be removed
from the orchard and burned, or I
buried several feet under the
ground, Webb said.
Early after-harvest removal
aud destruction of these left-over
peaches will also do much to re
duce the carry-over of Curculios I
! into the next season.
Harrowing to a depth of 3 to 4 j
inches, under the trees, about)
Three weeks fallowing Elberta'
| harvest will destroy many of the
second brood Curculios in the
'soil while they are in the vulner
able pupal stage.
After-harvest dusting will kill
many Curculio beetles feeding in
the orchard before they go into
hibernation. Two applications
of lead arsenate-lime dust, con
sisting of 90 parts of hydrated
lime and 10 parts of lead arse
nate should be applied with a
power duster, using about one
fifth of a pound of the mixture
per tree per application. The
first application should be made
four weeks after harvesting El
bertas, and the second one two
weeks later, he explained.
Careful pruning this fall and
winter to remove all dead and
diseased branches and twigs
from the trees will also do much
to reduce the carry-over of the
Brown Rot organisms, which also
cause twig blight. The prim
ings should be carefully piled and
burned, he concluded.
Mexicans Play Music by Ear
Mexicans buy almost no sheet
music. Once they hear a song they
can repeat it accurately on what
ever instrument they play, without
printed notes.
Poultry Feed
One 100-pound bag of 36 to 38 pel*
cent concentrate, and 700 pounds of
whole farm grains will feed 109
hens on full egg production about
one month.

Citrus Vitamin
If breakfast citrus juice is
squeezed the night before as a time
saver, keep it cold and covered,
remembering that the less air space
there is between juice and contain
er top, the better for vitamin C.
With these precautions, citrus juice
will lose little of its most valuable
vitamin, even if stored for 24 hours.
