Insec cs Attack
Georgia Pecans
Although a fair crop of pecans
is in prospect and prices are high,
returns from the crop will be re
duced because of attacks by in
sect pests, George H. Eiror,
horticulturist of the State Ex
tension Service, predicted this
week.
Georgia ranks first in the Nation
in acreage of improved varieties,
Mr. Eiror pointed out, but yields
are cut heavily each year by in
sects. Pecan weevils, he said, are
one of the insects doing serious
1 damage in some orchards of Stu
art, Schley and Mahan varieties
in middle and north Georgia.
Mr. Eiror said that more am
more Georgia farmers are using
control methods to combat thesi
pests, because a satisfactory am
inexpensive method has been
trie dand has proved practical.
Kill the weevils
This method, according to Mr,
Eiror, consists of bumping the
tree limbs several times in Aug
ust and September and catching
the disloded weevils on sheets.

| Weevils caught in this mannei
i should be killed immediately, Mr.
: Firor suggested.
Worms that ruin pecans come
, from eggs laid deeps in the nuts
by weevils just after shells hard
en and kernels fill, the Extension
worker declared. In the early
part of the season weevils punc
ture nuts on the lower limbs but
. as the low nuts become scarce
the weevils go to higher limbs.
Weevil-infested nuts should be
gathered and burned to prevent
weevils from enteringthe ground,
he asserted.
