SHOWER GIVEN
Miss Montine Harrison, who is
to be married in December to
Buddy Manor, was honored at a
shower by Mrs, C. H, Whit
worth on Saturday.
Thirty guests were invited to
this lovely affair. A Hallowe’en
scheme dominated the deco
rations,
Scottish Superstition
Scottish babies were once care
fully guarded until after their chris
tenings, in the belief that fairies
•would attempt to steal them from
their cradles. Any specially peevish
or weakly baby was regarded as a
changling whom the fairies had
substituted for the original infant.
Productive Rains
Each inch of July rainfall in the
corn belt is worth millions of
dollars, increasing the crop by
eight bushels an acre. In the wheat
states, May-June rains have much
the same effect.

Darning Tips
When darning, use a fine needle
and short thread, as long thread
pulled back and forth across a tear
or hole tends to stretch the darn
out of shape. Darn on the right
side, but steam press the finished
darn on the wrong side, then brush
the right side to lift the nap.
Burning Money
The Southeast suffers a tre-j
mendous unnecessary economic!
loss each year in searing forest,
i fires. In 1945, Georgia anb Al-j
bama suffered a loss of an esti
mated $1,500*000 from forest
fires.
The farmers and landowners in
Houston would do well to take
every precaution in protecting
their forest land?. This becomes
1 even more important now in view
I of the establishment in Macon of
two great wood-using industries.
One is the Macon Kraft Corp.
and the other the Amstrong Cork
Co., both of which will use pine
for manufacturing paper and
fiberboard,
This can be an immense in
crease in the annual income of
the farmers in the
county. Certainly they will take
every advantage of the oppor
tunity offered by the production
