Linder Will Seek
Cash for Markets
Commissioner of Agriculture Tom
Linder has decided to ask the 1947
Legislature for $4,000,000 in four
years to build farmers’ markets to
set! Georgia products
Commissioner Linder based his
plans on proposals to build a $2,-
000.000 transfer market at Augusta,
similar to the Atlanta farmers’
market, and a million dollar ex
pansion of the Atlanta market.
Equipping all state markets with
cold storage facilities and communi
cation systems would requir e the
fourth million.
“If we could spend one million
dollars per ycUr for the next four
years on Georgia markets, then we
could begin constructing a $2,500,-
000 market for Georgia farm prod
ucts i n Washington, D. C.,’ - Linder
said.
Throw Away Scrap,
Builders Advised
Are you building or doing any
construction work? If so, th e State
Department of Forestry cautions you
not to place freshly cut lumber or
wood scrap near your trees. This
practise often results in an attack
on living trees by beetles which are
attracted by the scent of the sawn
wood, , ,
If cf no value. sci*ap lumber
should b e buried or burned and
lumber that you think you cbm use
should be prcperly stored away,
according to H. Da'e Story, assist
ant director of th e Forestry Depart
] ment,
Beetle infestations are indicated
when brown “sick’’ areas appear
here and there among the green
leaves or pine needles. Once a tree
is infested it is a menace to others.
It should b e cut down and destroy

The Hope Diamond
The fabulous blue diamond, weigh
ing 112V4 carats uncut and about 6814
carats after cutting, was stolen in
1642 from the breastplate of an idol
in a temple near Lhasa, Tibet, by a
French adventurer, according to
one version of its history while oth
ers claim it came from a mine in
southwest India. The French jewel
er, Baptiste Tavernier, sold it to
Louis XIV in 1669 and it remained a
possession of the French crown until
the robbery of the crown jewels in
1792. At one point it turned up in
the shop of William Fals, an Amster
dam gem cutter, but his son stole it
and no trace of it was found until a
London dealer, David Eliason, sold
it in 1830 to an English banker,
Henry Thomas Hope, for $90,000.
Meantime the point of the original
heart shape had been cut off to dis
guise the famous stone so that it
weighed 4414 carats by this time. In
1861 Hope’s daughter Henrietta mar
ried the sixth Duke of Newcastle.
Her son, Lord Francis Hope, inher
ited the diamond and it was worn by
his wife, May Yohe, American mu
sical comedy queen, whom he mar
ried in 1894. About 1908 Habib Bey
Acquired the jewel for nearly $400,-
000 and in 1909 it was auctioned in
Paris and purchased by a dealer
named Rosenau for about $BO,OOO.
The firm of Cartier sold it in 1911 to
Edward B. McLean for nearly $400,-
000 as a gift for his wife, Evelyn
Walsh McLean, the present owner.
