Cottons Decline
Sharp in Houston
The decline of King Cotton as
the major crop of Houston county
is reflected in the cotton census
report for the period to Nov. 1,
which shows only 803 bales ginned
in Houston county this year.
Looking back in The Home
journal files, you would find that
from the crop of 1926—twenty
years ag0 —8,796 bales had been
ginned up to this date in that year.
Corn, livestock, sweet potatoes,
pecans and other crops have sup
plemented the county’s income—
once dependent almost entirely on
cotton.

Acreage, topography, drainage

important factors that H. H. Kauff

recommends be considered when
ranging turkeys.
Labor, expense of equipment,
overhead expenses, etc., are often
smaller when large flocks are
reared on range than in confine

In hilly country the turkeys should
be moved to the valleys in the fall,
as they reach maturity and the sea

Japanese Long-Horned
Weevil Invades U. S.
Another native insect pest of Ja
pan may prove a menace to
America if not destroyed in time,
says Harry B. Weiss, chief of the
N. J. bureau of plant industry. The

the United States.
Japanese long-horned weevil was
first discovered by Weiss in 1916.
The adults are primarily foliage
feeders on more than 100 host
plants, including annuals, perenni
als, shrubs, deciduous trees and ev
ergreens. The use of 25 per cent
Cryolite dust was found effective
at Connecticut in the control of the
Japanese long-horned weevil.
Fertilize Your Apple
Trees During October
Late September, October and No
vember is the time for making a
fall application of fertilizer on bear
ing apple trees.
The nitrogen which gets into the
trees this fall is an insurance that
the trees will get off to a good start
next spring, believes D. S. Brown
of the University of Illinois.
For trees of good vigor, an ap
plication of sulfate of ammonia, or
its equivalent in another nitrogen
carrier, at the rate of from one
fourth to one-half pound per year
of tree age may be used. The fall
; application should be followed by
another at or before time of bloom
in the spring.
Warp and Weft Defined
Warp threads are those which run
lengthwise of the fabric. Weft
threads run transversely.
j Acetate Rayon Requires
Different Laundering
Acetate rayons are entirely differ
ent from animal or plant source fab
rics and should be laundered in a
different way. Hand laundering is
recommended, but machine washing
is usually safe if garments are left
in no longer than throe minutes.
Stubborn spots are removed by
smoothing the wet fabric out on a
flat surface and rubbing extra soap
into the spots before actual launder
ing.
Acetate garments should be hung
up without wringing just as they
come from the last rinse, or the wa
ter may be blotted up by rolling
them in a towel. They should never

Cut Down Grain Foods
If You Plan Reducing
Do not attempt to reduce except
under a physician’s guidance, if you
are under 20 years of age, or if you
are a young mother, or have organ
ic complications, such as heart dis
ease, experts say. And do not think
of reducing if you are not above
average weight—say, at least 10 per
cent.
Keep in mind three simple calo
rie facts (1) all foods provide some
calories, that is, units of fuel for
bodily energy, (2) foods that pack
the most calories are the starches,
sweets, and fats, and (3) more calo
ries than you use in work or play—
that’s where fat begins.
For a reducing diet keyed to the
times, eat almost no grain food.
Every roll or thick slice of bread or
ounce serving of cereal that you
don’t eat trims about 100 calories
from the day’s meals. By substi
tuting fruits and custards for baked
desserts, such as cake, pie, dough
nuts or cookies, you can trim off
another 100 to 300 calories, because
so much sugar and fat go with the
flour in these.
Salute of 21 Guns
A salute of 21 guns to the Presi
dent of the United States was pre
scribed by United States army and
navy regulations in 1818, in accord
ance with an act of congress dated
February 7, 1815. Officials of the
bureau of public relations of the
war department explain that evi
dently we inherited this custom
from England for British navy regu
lations of 1772 prescribed a salute
of 21 guns to the king or queen. The
navy department traces the origin
of the 21-gun international salute to
early times when land batteries
i “out - saluted’’ ships by offering
three shots for each of a warship’s
seven, because gunpowder, then
made largely of sodium nitrate, de
teriorated at sea. As gunpowder
improved in quality ships began re
turning salutes gun-for-gun with
land batteries. On August 18, 1875,
the United States and England an
nounced an agreement on the cus
tom of returning salutes shot-for
shot. Since England had developed
a 21-gun salute the 21-gun system
became the custom which other na
tions soon adopted. It is an ancient
superstition that gun salutes should
be of an odd number.

Production Line Is
Adapted to Farms
Mechanical Age Proves
Benefit to Agriculture
The production line generally is
considered to exist only in city fac
tories but many farmers today
have borrowed a leaf from indus
try’s book by putting their grain
handling operations on approxi
mately the same automatic ‘oasis.
A by-product of the electro-agri
culture age, a system of this natyre
is applicable to both small and large
farms. Here's how it works; Grain
laden wagons are driven into the
barn or adjacent to a building in
which the produce is to be stored.
Stationary or portable elevators,

powered by electric motors as small
as one-third horsepower (although
one or, preferably, two horsepower
motors are recommended by most
agricultural specialists) raise the
grain into bins located above the
grinder and mixer. Electric hoists
often are used to tilt up the front
end of the wagon, allowing the grain
to pour out of the end gate into the
elevator hopper.
Unground grain flows by gravity
through chutes to a blower-equipped
grinder, which blows the ground
grain back into another overhead
bin, from which it again gravitates
by chute to the mixer. Mixed feed
is either fed out immediately,
sacked, re-elevated into storage bins
or blown directly into the feed lot.
Tests show that one man can unload
40 loads of corn per day, or a load
of grain in from two to three min
utes, with an electrically operated
elevator.
Present prospects indicate that
1947 will be another favorable year
for Georgia farmers.
