EDITORIAL
The cause of education was hav
ing its troubles last week.
In Buffalo, N. Y., teachers were
on strike for what they believe is a
decent wage, commensurate with
their training and duties.
In Washington, Congress threa-1
toned to cut off the school lunch j
program. Here in the South, where
we need Federal assistance to con
tinue the lunchroom program, this
was bad news indeed. Here in Hous
ton, where 300 schoolchildren re
ceive the daily benefits of the pro
gram, it was bad news, too.
Tire statisticians looked up the
record and found that we spend
more money every year for cosme
tics and liquor than we do for edu
cation. This is a sad state of affairs
for a nation that claims world lea
dership. All over the land, teachers
were leaving the profession because
they were not making as much as
unskilled laborers in many instan- 1

ces. In Georgia alone, more than
6,000 teachers have left the teach
ing profession for better jobs, and
better-paying jobs are available on
every side.
Up in Atlanta, where the legi
slature has been in session for six
weeks without accomplishing any
| thing but a ban against Negro vot
• ing, the politicans heard of increas
ing unrest among Georgia school
teachers. True, Georgia cannot
brag about some of her teachers be
cause some have not completed
high school. Yet Georgia must have
teachers. But if all the states began
to pay teachers decent salaries, all
the states would find better-trained
persons applying for jobs.
Children are crying for an edu
cation while the politicians consider
other things they believe more im
portant. The people will not tole
rate this situation long. They do
not believe, as some politicians do,
in the saying, “Keep 'em dumb and 1
vote ‘cm as you please.”

Ham and Egg Show
Will Start Today
Starting from an exhibit of 15 or
20 small hams and a few dozen dirty
eggs 32 years ago, the annual Negro
Ham and Egg Show at Fort Valley,
has become nationally famous.
The thirty-second annual show,
which is being held this week
(March 6 and 7), is featuring 600
hams, 200 shoulders and 200 pieces
of breakfast bacon. In addition, 250
dozen selected eggs and 12 pens of
purebred chickens have been in
cluded in this 1947 show. The show
was originated by O. S. O’Neal,
Negro county agent in Peach Coun
ty, and has been under his super
vision every year.
Ralph McGill, editor of The At
lanta Constitution, will be the prin
cipal speaker.

MRS. J. D. BRAGG
Mrs. Bragg to Talk
On Methodist Hour
Mrs. J. D. Bragg, national presi
dent of the Woman's Society of
Christian Service, St. Louis, Missou
ri, will be the speaker on The
Methodist Hour, March 9 at 8:30
a. m. over Stations WSB and
WMAZ.
As president of the woman’s work
of the Methodist Church, Mrs.
Bragg represents 1,317,732 women
who are organized into 27,065 so
cieties. These women during 1945
raised $4,850,000 to support home
and foreign missionary endeavors of
their church. With home misson
work in every part of the United
States and missionary activity in
every mission field alloted to The
Methodist Church the women of
this church carry on an active pro
gram of education and social ser
vice. An indication of the work
they support is this: they support
535 foreign missionaries who are
teachers, doctors, nurses, evanglists,
Bible teachers and workers in these
foreign fields.
Mrs. Bragg will speak on “Of
Such is the Kingdom” on this radio
network of 52 independent stations.
