Major League Baseball finally got under way
during the past week and produced, of course, its
usual surprises. Montreal won three straight in
the NL East Kansas City jumped in front with
three straight in v the AL West. The Braves, as
expected, look like last years version....maybe
worst.
In the light of whats happened so far heres the
way I predict the rest of the season to unfold.
APRIL 23 Willie Mays smashes tenth homer of
season to beat Pirates 1-0 as Sam McDowell fires
two-hitter. After game Mays says, “I’ve never felt
better even though I got a little winded after
rounding second base after the homer.”
MAY 1 Phillies drop Reds 10-1 as Cincinnati
bullpen fails to protect 2-1 eighth inning lead.
Manager Sparky Anderson says he can’t figure
out what’s wrong with his relievers....after ap
pearing in every game since opening day.
MAY 15 Oakland's Denny McLain loses fourth
straight start, retires next day and joins Vida Blue
in public relations work, "I was getting tired of
baseball, anyway,” Denny proclaims to the press.
MAY 25 Reds fire Sparky Anderson as manager
after 15-0 loss to Montreal. It was Cincinnate’s
tenth loss in a row. Anderson replies after firing,
“Our hitting just hasn’t come around yet.”
MAY 26 Reds hire Hoyt Wilhelm as new
manager. “I’ll probably put myself in the starting
rotation,” the old sarge announces after signing
ten-year pact.
JUNE 10 Orioles maul Yankees 11-2 to stretch
AL East lead to twelve games before noisy mob of
42 fans in Baltimore. “Manager Earl Weaver
proclaimed, “This was one of our biggest crowds
of the season. We’re real proud of our fans here in
Baltimore.”
JUNE 10 Braves Hank Aaron hits first homer of
season, to move within 74 of Ruth’s home run
record. “I’m having an off year,” says the .211
hitting Aaron, “But I’m only 38 years old. I’ll
bounce back big next year.”
AUGUST 3 Orioles double-header with
Cleveland postponed for lack of interest. Three
fans and four Indians show up for contest. “The
weather wasn’t very nice anyhow,” Weaver
replies after cancellation.
SEPTEMBER 3 Wilhelm blanks Cardinals 4-0
on three hits as Reds win second straight game.
“My fast ball was really humming tonight,” Hoyt
replies after game.
SEPTEMBER 4 Reds place Wilhelm on
disabled list with sore arm. “I can’t figure out
what’s wrong,” says the 49 year old Wilhelm.
SEPTEMBER 16 Braves win second straight
game, beating Expos 9-8. Manager Harris says:
“We’re ready to make a run for the flag, even
though we’re in last place. This winning streak
has got us real fired up.”
OCTOBER 2 Braves finish season with twelve
straight losses as Luman Harris signs new ten
year contract as manager. Harris says the Braves
will win the pennant in ’73. “We’ve got what it
takes to be a winnerLuman tells the media.
OCTOBER 3 Royals win AL West crown on last
day of season. Concede play-offs to Orioles.
OCTOBER? World Series cancelled. “There’s a
good football game on TV today and we ddon’t
want to miss it," says the players.

the one-hit pitching of Duane

first inning as McCarty,
Richerson, Hillson, and
Robinson singled. There
were also 2 Warrior miscues
in the inning. When the first
inning was over, the Pan

Perry Wins VO Events
in County Trask Meet
Perry boys, age 7 through
14, represented our city in
excellent fashion as they
participated in their first
track meet ever. Warner
Robins International
Stadium was the scene of the
meet held Thursday, April
13th. This was a Houston
County Recreation Dept,
four team meet composed of
Perry plus the Colt, Raider
and Westside teams of
Warner Robins. Perry
coaches were concerned that
our athletes would be awed
by the size of the stadium.
Such fears proved groun
dless as the pale, powder
blue colors of Perry were in
the top three finishers time
after time.
Little Stephen Harris, a
consistent and magnificent
competitor in the age 8 and
under Mite category, set the
tone of things to come. He
blazed to a first place win as
he captured the 50 yard dash,
7.7, leading from gun to tape.
Perry coaches and fans
could sense the excitement
generating in the team as
they continued to gain
momentum. At the con
clusion of the meet the tired,

headed home with many
honors as they gathered 140

Barnes Slaps Single Against Ms. De Sales
Cavaliers Blank Panthers
4-0; Brown Fans Thirteen
Mt. DeSales righthander
Jimmy Viviani pitched a
brilliant six-hitter, struck
out eight batters, and
coasted to a 4-0 decision over
the Perry Panthers Monday
afternoon at Houston Field.
The crafty moundsman
kept the Perry batters off
blaance the entire game and
demonstrated pinpoint
control. Viviani did not walk
a batter.
Perry southpaw Earl
Brown, who went all the
way, linked up with Viviani
and held the Cavaliers
scoreless for the first two
frames, before the Macon
visitors plated the first run of
the game on two hits in the
third. DeSales rapped Brown
for three hits in the fourth
frame, while tailing two
more and closed out the
scoring with another run in
the sixth. Brown gave up
a second place in the High
Jump and took a third in the
second heat of the 100 yard
dash. Had Stephen been able
to run in the first heat of the
100 his time was good enough
for first place. Stephen also
anchored his team in the 440
yard relay passing some
three other runners who
were ahead of him to place
third. Another fine effort by
an 8 year old was turned in
by Kenny Payne as he took a
first place in the Softball
throw OlVi ft.). Kenny ran
the first leg in the 440 yard
relay already mentioned. He
later displayed a fine second
leg run as he helped three 9
year olds to a third place in a
440 relay. Whitt Smith picked
up a third place in the Soft
ball throw which had 13
contestants. Al Casey and
Joe Thomas ran the second
and third legs of the third
place 440 relay and were in
other events. Fred Dooley
ran a strong 100 yard dash
but failed to place. Hervia
Ingram Jr. was in the 50
yard dash. Both Fred and
Hervia were in the broad
Jump.
Perry’s best performance
was turned in by the 9 year
olds as they won first place.
Tony Harris won a first heat
50 yard dash in 7.2, first in
the 100 yard dash in 14.2 and
had the winning Softball
throw of 122 ft. In addition he
anchored the 440 yard relay
as they took third and later
he was anchor man in a 440
relay of ten year olds, Perry
completed 3 nine and one ten
in this event; as they took a
third place. Eric Thomas
was only a short distance
behind as he took a second
heat, first place in the 50
yard dash in 7.3. He was
second in the 100 yard dash
and third in the Softball
only seven hits, walked two
and fanned thirteen
Cavaliers.
The non-region con
frontation started off like it
was going to be a real pit
chers duel. Brown set the
Jimmy Viviani
Fires Shutout
Cavaliers down in order in
the first, while Perry could
muster only a harmless
thow. Eric turned in two fine
440 relay legs also. Scott
Hedrick captured third in the
50 yard dash and ran a leg in
the 440 relay. Coach Larry
Hedrick had every right to
be proud of this No. 1 team.

the 50 yard dash and ran the
third leg in the 440 relay
already mentioned.
Lynn Smith and Carl
Walker were the leaders of
the second place finish by the
eleven year olds. Lynn took
first in the 220 yard run
(32.2) and Broad Jump (12.3)
plus second in the 75 yard
dash. Carl was first in the 440
yard run (1:15.7) plus third
in the 75 yard dash.
Leon Green fired up the 12
single by Clarington.
Brown continued to waltz
through the Mt. De Sales
batting order in the second
inning, giving up only a
walk. In the Perry half of the
second, third baseman J. B.
Goheen blasted a long
double, but Viviani induced
Joe Andrews to fan, Glad
felter to ground out and
Brown to strike out, ending
the threat with no damage
being done.
In the Cavalier third,
Sammy DiNardo singled to
center to lead off the inning,
stole second base, advanced
to third on an infield
groundout, and scored on
Johnny Henderson’s single.
Viviani filed out deep to
William West to end the
inning.
In the Perry third, Mark
Shugart rapped a one out
double, but was stranded as
Clarington and Barnes
grounded out and filed out
respectively.
The Cavaliers put on their
hitting shoes in the fourth.
Bud Butler led off with a
single and took second on a
Perry error. Brown fanned
the next batter, but gave up a
run producing single to Tim
Jackson, who advanced to
second on the throw to the
plate. Another single by
DiNardo produced the
second run of the inning, as

Perry Girl Thinclads Win
On Saturday, April 15th at
high noon, Perry girls
wearing their bright red
colors, met in competition
with two other Houston

teams in Warner Robins.
The Mite team girls (age 8

with 45 points. Perry’s “B”
leaguers (age 9 and 10) won
a second place as they
scored 47 points. Our 11
and 12 year old girls scored
zero points.
The Mites were lead by
Pamela Walker as she took a
first place in both the 50 yard
dash and the Softball throw
followed by second place
wins in the 75 yard dash and
High Jump. Alnita Lasseter
placed in five events as she
took a second place in the

places as follows: 50 and 75
yard dashes, High Jump and
Softball throw.

being the anchor runner on
the 440 yard relay team
which captured a third place
spot. Jada was first in the 50
and 100 yard dashes plus the
220 yard run. She tied for
second in the High Jump and
placed third in the Broad
Jump. Myrtis Walker placed
second in both the 50 yard
dash and the Broad Jump
plus a third place finish in
the 100 yard dash. Myrtis ran
the third leg of the 440 yard
relay. Pamela Walker and
Sharon Williams were also
runners on the relay team.
Coaches Laveme Harris
and Mary Walker are real
proud of these girls who
represented Perry so well.
These girls had another meet
yesterday, too late for this
edition, so read next week’s
Home Journal for those
results.

Perry as a 14 year old but
had no competition so he ran
for the experience but was
not allowed any points.
Perry coaches feel the
team is strongest in dashes,
runs and Softball throws.
Improvement must be made
in the baton passing part of
the relays plus Broad & High
Jumps. Perry will be
competing again today in
another meet in Warner
Robins at 5:30 pm.
Perry’s strong armed
lefthander put the Cavaliers
down in the top of the fifth
giving up only a walk. The
Panthers could do nothing
with Viviani’s servings in the
fifth and went down in order.
Mt. De Sales picked up
their final run in the sixth as
Jackson singled, stole
second and crossed the
plate on Gary White’s one
base hit to left.
Perry got the leadoff man
on in their half of the sixth as
Barnes dropped in an op
posite field single, then stole
second base. Booney was
then called out on strikes.
Barnes, still at second base,
tried to steal third and was
thrown out. Goheen
grounded to third to end the
inning.
In the DeSales half of the
seventh, Brown set the
Cavaliers down in order and
recorded his thirteenth
strikeout. Panther first
sacker Joe Andrews helped
the Perry lefthander record
the first out of the inning by
robbing Henderson of a hit.
The Cavalier catcher lined a
shot that had “hit” written
all over it, but Andrews
leaped high and came down
with the ball.
Perry continued to have
trouble with Viviani’s serves
and went down 1,2,3 in their
final at bats.
Third baseman J. B
Goheen led the Panthers
hitting attack with a double
and single in three trips to
the plate. Mark Shugart had
a double in three tries. Cath
cer Jerry Barnes rapped a
single in two official at bats.
Barnes also recorded a
sacrifice. Lawrence
Clarington laced a single m
three attempts and played a
fine defensive game m
center field. Van Gladfelder
knocked a single in three
trips.
The Panthers are
scheduled to play Macon
County today at 4:00 m
Montezuma.
