Nunn Gets In Runoff
By Bobby Branch
Perry’s favorite son U.S.
Senatorial candidate has
evidently captured a run-off
spot with incumbent David
Gambrell in an August 29
run-off election between the
top two Democratic vote
getters in Tuesday’s elec
tion.
At press time, Nunn had
gotten 23 per cent of the state
vote while Gambrell had 32
per cent. Third place runner,

Nunn was in his Atlanta
headquarters in the early
morning hours of Wednesday
looking and acting very
“calm and cool as a
cucumber”, according to
Avon Buice of Perry, who
has worked in the Nunn
campaign from the begin

Nunn and his staff plan to
southern Houston County, a
portion of Macon County and
all of Schley County. Houston
County totals were 2,500 for
Walker and 719 for Sumner.

saying Vandiver and some of
the other candidates may
lend their support to the

has been no official word on
that matter as yet.

close as some observers in
Perry had predicted.

A record number of
Houston County voters went
to the polls Tuesday- many
standing in line as long as an
hour - and cast their ballots
in one of the most exciting
campaigns in recent history.
An electrical storm in parts
of the County caused a delay
Tuesday afternoon in voting
and the Perry precinct votes
were not completed until
around midnight Tuesday
because the absentee ballots
in the county (about 500)
were counted by hand by
Perry poll workers.
The races for the County’s
constitutional officers and
state senator created the
most local interest. In
cumbent sheriff Albert
Hudson was soundly
defeated by former County
Commissioner Cullen
Talton, who wanted a strong
campaign calling for
complete reform and
reorganization of the
sheriff’s dept. Talton’s
county wide vote was 7,697 to
Hudson’s 4,145. Hudson, who
was seeking his third 4 year
term, lost in every percinct
including his home precincts
of Warner Robins.
Incumbent county school
supt. David A. Perdue beat
back a political newcomer
challenger A1 Jones to begin
his sixteenth year as head of
the public schools. Jones
carry a big black vote and
corner a fair share of white
votes in the district but
Walker’s power throughout
the entire district was under
estimated by many but the
candidate himself.
The district 100 race has
created considerable in
terest in Perry with both
candidates waging a
vigorous but cleanly fought
campaign. The candidates
stuck to the issues and it
was the most issue-oriented
race in the campaign.
Walker, who is a political
newcomer, will take his seat
in the Georgia General
Assembly in January. He is
presently serving as the
Perry City attorney and is a
former Judge of the
Municipal Court here. He is
29 years old.
The district 100 post was
created by the last session of
the Georgia General
Assembly in a state-wide
reapportionment of the
legislative districts. Houston
County now actually has a
total of three legislators
including two from Warner
Robins.
Walker stated, “I am most
humble and grateful for the
vote of confidence shown to
me in Tuesday’s election. It
was a hard, cleanly fought
campaign. I pledge my best
efforts in behalf of the people
of the 100th district and I
promise to do my utmost to
represent everyone in a fair
and impartial manner to the
best of my ability.”
campaigned strongly on the
theme of “time for a
change” but his campaign
never really threatened
Perdue.
Senator Stanley Smith of
Perry was defeated in his -
re-election bid to represent

and a portion of Macon
Counties in what is being
termed a major upset. Smith
has long been a powerful
figure in the state senate and
a close ally of Lt. Gov. Lester
Maddox. He was defeated by
Warner Robins businessman
Ed Barker, who has been
closely linked with Gov.
Jimmy Carter. It has been
rumored that Gov. Carter
was strongly supporting
Barker in his bid to unseat
Smith, who was a leader in
the senate to curtail much of
Carter’s reorganization bill.
The Houston totals for that
race were 7,056 for Barker
and 4,570 for Smith. Smith
also lost in Peach County
with Barker getting 1076
votes to 910 for Smith.
Barker will face Republican
Tony Robins for the senate
seat in November.
There will be a run-off in
the race for District At
torney between Joneal Lee
