Nip Trojans
In Thriller
Behind 6-3 going into the eight inning the Perry
Athletics struck for three big runs and then added
the winning run with two outs in the bottom half of
the ninth inning to lift the A’s to a hard-fought 7-6
decision over the Valdosta Trojans last Sunday
afternoon in Perry. The victory kept the Athletics
with an unblemished slate (10-0), with two con
frontations set for the long holiday weekend; a
Sunday afternoon game on the road, and then a
tough Monday encounter with the powerful
Warner Robins Jets at old Houston High Field.
Perry’s Lawrence Clarington went all the way
to register his fourth win of the season and wound
up with the winning hit in the final frame. The
southpaw hurler surrendered 8 hits, walked 3 and
fanned 7 Valdosta batters.
In the A’s uprising in the eighth, reserve Johnny
Brooks came off the bench to start things off with
a clutch hit. Clarington walked and then Anderson
Gilbert crashed a 2-run double to pull the A’s to
within 6-5. Horace Gilbert followed with a line
drive single to plate A. Gilbert with the tieing run.
In the ninth the A’s put two men on base, with
two outs, when Lawrence Clarington delivered the
winning hit to give the A’s a 7-6 decision.
James Hillson, Louie Evans and Horace Gilbert
played outstanding defense for the unbeaten
Athletics.
