educated,” he said. "But
I think it’ll suffer In the
course, too."
Perdue’s own ideal of
education, he said, is the
traditional three R’s,
with plenty of
memorization involved.
‘There is nothing in the
early stages of education
that can supplant drill,”
he said. “At some point in
time we're going to have
to get back to more
reading, writing, and
arithmetic."
Among Perdue’s
regrets about his career,
he said, is the fact that he
has not seen teachers
being paid as much as
they should receive. Also,
the kindergarten
program in the county
has not been fully im
plemented as an all-day
program, and the county
still lacks many facilities,
such as classrooms and
gymnasiums.
Perdue said he does not
plan to serve in an ad
visory position for Ar
thur. "When 1 retire, I’m
gonna retire," he said.
TTI be available, but I’m
not going to try to put
myself on anybody.”
Perdue said, "The
profession of education
has been good to me, and
I’ve grown with it. The
beautiful part is that I’ve
felt no pressure to get out
of it. I’ve Just reached a
point where I want to take
time out and enjoy life for
a while, and that’s what I
intend to do."

Chamber Has
Charge Os
Program
Thousands of Perry
residents are expected to
be in the downtown area
this weekend for the
annual Christmas at the
Crossroads program to
officially welcome in the
holiday season.
Several changes will be
in effect this year, ac
cording to information
from the Perry Chamber
of Commerce, sponsors of
the event.
The Christmas at the
Crossroads program,
including the parade and
Candlelight Service, had
been sponsored for many
years by the City of
Perry, but former Mayor
James McKinley asked
the local Chamber of
Commerce to assume
responsibility for the
event beginning this
year.
This year the parade
will be held Saturday at 6
p.m., with the Can
dlelight Service slated for
4:30 p.m. Sunday. A
Chamber spokesman said
the change was made to
allow more people to
participate in the events.
In the past, many have
complained about the
cold nights during the
Candlelight Service,
which had been held
following the parade.
Perry Mayor Barbara
Clahoun issued a
statement praising the
Chamber for assuming
the responsibility of the
events and calling on all
citizens to participate in
the many activities
scheduled or this
weekend.
Dr. Johns To
Speak At
Candlelight
Program
Dr. Robert G. Johns,
pastor of Ingleside
Baptist Church in Macon,
will be the speaker at the
Christmas at the
Crossroads program at
4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7
on the Courthouse lawn in
Perry.
Dr. Johns, a native of
Thomaston, Ga., has
served at churches in
Hazlehurst, Ga.;
Pearson, Ga.; Powell,
Tex., Jacksonville, Fla.
and Stuckey, Ga. He has
also been involved in
mission work in Ohio,
Alaska and Puerto Rico.
The worship service
Sunday afternoon will
also feature a can
dlelighting ceremony and
special music by Bob
Brewer and Jim
Mcllrath, as well as
Christmas carols,
scripture rading and
songs by a choir made up
from churches in the
community.
In the event of rain, the
program wil be held at
the First Baptist Church.
