Hospital's maternity care department offers several services
Perry Hospital believes that
childbirth is a natural experience
and one of the most important life
events for a family. In keeping with
this thought, Perry Hospital offers
a complete maternity care depart
ment providing a realm of services
from prenatal classes to individual
ized mother-baby care.
To ensure a safe delivery, moth
ers are offered a variety of educa
tional courses to assist them in
making choices during their preg
nancy. Changes, Choices and
Challenges is a five week course
that prepares the mother to cope
with the changes and fear of labor.
The course is taught by Kay
Hartley, RN, to provide informative
options and resources to each fam
ily, while assisting in their lives. A
tour of the labor and delivery de
partment is offered as a part of this
course to familiarize the mother
with the area in which she will de

liver.
The labor and delivery department
is equipped with state-of-the-art
equipment to ensure mothers the
optimum care they need and de
serve. A birthing room is also
available to mothers. This room
creates a home-like atmosphere for
mothers. The birthing room is ac
cented with pastel colors, televi
sion, radio and telephone for the
mother's convenience. There are
also fetal monitoring equipment and
two nurses available to monitor the
mother and baby’s recovery. The
birthing room provides a family
centered atmosphere to mothers
who wish to have family members
join in the bonding of their new
loved one soon alter she delivers.
A new service offered to new
mothers is postpartum home visits.
A registered nurse employed by the
hospital will make two visits to the
home within the first six weeks of
delivery. An casement of both
mother and baby will be made in an
effort to identify any problems or
concerns that the mother may have
once she is released from the hospi
tal.
Another option to mothers is
Outpatient Delivery. This is where
mother and infant arc allowed to go
home within 24 hours of delivery,
if there arc no complications. "This
type of delivery is a real asset in a
time of rising health costs as pa
tients without delivery insurance
can deliver at lower out-of-pocket
cost, without compromising care,"
said Jalcnc Bennett, RN nurse man
ager of labor and delivery.
Dr. Larry Stewart, local practi
tioner, works closely with the nurs
ery team which averages 25 babies
a a month. Pat Dent, RN, nursery
manager, said the staff is willing to
teach mothers the necessary skills
required to care for their baby once

Authority elects
Cotton as new
1993 chairman
By TERESSA ULIN
Park News Services
The Houston County Hospital
Authority Wednesday voted unani
mously to name board member Hal
Colton as its new chairman for the
coming fiscal year.
Carl Beard, a member of the au
thority since 1987, was appointed
vice-chairman.
Cotton, who is completing his
first year as a hospital authority
board member, accepted the nomi
nation with the intent to continue
within the philosophy established
by current chairman Pete Rucker.
"Pete has brought a new plane ol
leadership to this authority,"
Colton said of Rucker. The chair
man-elect said he intends to dele
gate functions and responsibilities
to Beard and to members of the au
thority, continue to improve rela
tions between the county hospital
system and the community and to
oversee a fiscally conservative bud
get.
Pushing lor the board to be
"frugal with the public's money,"
Cotton said it is the authority's re
sponsibility to utilize taxpayer dol
lars in "the best and most prudent
manner possible," he said.
Cotton and Beard will assume
their new positions March 1.
