Perry Players' theater group
offers fun for interested actors
Carol Slrandburg, director for the
current Perry Players' musical
"Fiorellol", is very complimentary
about the individuals in her cast, "I
think wc have as talented a group of
individuals for this show as we
have had for any of our big musi
cals! The leads have good voices,
and so do the individuals in the cho
rus."
With the excellent musicals from
Perry Players in the past, those are
pretty big words! How can that be?
Carol offers this explanation. "Each
show that wc do introduces us to
new people throughout Middle
Georgia. If a person has some
experience, they want to be a part
of creating the next high quality
show. They want to learn and share
in the magic of creating something
special."
Producer Kellie Bowen agrees,
but takes up quickly for those in
the cast who arc new. "About half
this cast has never performed with
Perry Players", she observes, "and
about half of those have never per
formed at all in a community the
atre setting. But Perry Players
doesn't require experience, wc pro
vide it! My first experience with
Perry Players occurred just a few
years ago, and here 1 am producing
my second play!"
Several of the cast members echo
Kellie’s enthusiasm. Newcomer
Gina Tribble got involved because
of the excitement she observed in
her sister's friend. "She’d talk about
how much fun it was, and what
good experience you gained. She
encouraged me to audition, and I
was scared to death! But Carol
Slrandburg quickly pul me and ev
erybody else at case, and it’s been
fun ever since. I like to sing, and
I'm finding this is a good way to
share my interest with others who
enjoy the same thing. And the ex
perienced folks are just so willing
to help die newcomer! "
Betsy Portman is another who
got involved because of a friend.
"My friend Karen Nikitopoulos had
her first experience with Perry
Players in last year's musical "Once

PHS VOCA students visit local elderly
By NICHOLE HAYNES
VOCA Reporter
On Nov. 24, the Perry High
VOCA Club began their 1992-1993
Community Project. The focus for
our Community Project is to make
the people at our local nursing
home feel appreciated.
In starting our project, several
club members delivered
Thanksgiving cards to the New
Perry Nursing home residents.
When they arrived, Mr. Erwin took
pictures of the members that went.
Then they got their cards and began
distributing them. While doing
this, they also took pictures of the
Notice of Meetings
Houston County Board of Education
At its January 12th meeting the Houston County Board of
Education voted to meet monthly during 1993 at the Board
of Education Office, 1211 Washington Street, Perry,
Georgia. Meetings will occur on the second Tuesday of
each month, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The public is invited to each of these meetings.
Houston County Board of Education
Together We Teach
Upon a Mattress." She had a lemlic
lime and was going to try out this
year and begged me to come with
her. 1 really loved the thought of
auditions, but never expected I
could or would. Ten minutes before
she left for auditions, Karen dared
me to do it. I didn't have any song
prepared! 1 was just astounded that
I got a part. Even then I wasn't sure
I'd stick with it. But the first night
of rehearsal, when we read through
the whole show, I started getting
engrossed. Then the next night,
when wc started working on the
first song, 1 was hooked! It’s fun to
step out beyond what you've ever
tried and realize you really can do it!
So. maybe it's okay to "step out"
if you are a woman, but what's it
like if you’re a man? Newcomer
Trey Forces explains, "A friend of
mine at church heard me singing
and suggested I try out. He called
others who also encouraged me. 1
like to have good creative experi
ences, to meet people and to have
fun. I was excited and very nervous
all at once. Although I write songs
and play the guitar, standing up in
front of a lot of people I didn't
know was not easy. Still, I know
that the more I try, the more com
fortable I get. So far, folks have
been helpful, and it's really fun for
me."
Another male newcomer to Perry
Players has some extensive experi
ence on other stages for someone so
young. Ryan McCoy was selected
"Best Actor" at Houston County
High School for the year 1991-92.
He's currently serving as president
of the HCHS Thespian Troupe and
as president of Student Council.
So, with such as busy schedule,
why did Ryan want to be involved
in this show?
"I'd seen previous Perry Players
shows before, and they were really
good. I just wanted to be a part of
one. Several of my friends had been
involved in 'Tintypes' two years
ago, and they had good things to
say about their experience. Based on
what I've observed so far, I can sec
why!"

The w'cck before our students got

The members who were present this
