A teacher may be very learned
and very apt to teach and yet fail
of success in his community. It
is highly important that he
should possess and carefully culti
vate all those social qualities
which will increase his influence
and usefulness in a community.
He should consider it a part of his
duty, when he takes up a school,
to arouse a deeper interest among
the patrons than they have ever
before felt. He should not be
satisfied till he has reached every
mind connected with his charge in
such a way that they will cheer

discredit the teacher in advance,
and this puts him to* serious dis
advantage. The teacher needs;
and is entitled to, the good will of
those under whom and for whom
he 1 abors; and every parent should
especially remember that confi
dence is due the teacher until it is
forfeited. He cannot command
confidence, but he can always de
serve it, and his chief aim is to be
and do what should commend him
to the good opinion of pupils and
patrons. I do not mean by this,
Realizing the

he is alive to the well-being of
their children.
He should seek frequent oppor
tunities of intercourse with the pa
rents, although the advance should
be made by the parents them
selves; yet, as a general rule the
teacher must lead the way. He
must often introduce himself un
invited to the people among whom
he dwells, call at their homes and
converse with them about his duty

Allen Wilder Made District Man
ager. |
The Atlanta News, of recent
date, has the following notice of
Mr, Allen Wilder, who was princi- j
pal of the school at Flowery
Branch for a year or two, and who
is well known in Gainesville:
“Allen Wilder, a prominent
young insurance man of Atlanta,
who has for some time been in the
employ of the Northwestern Mu
tual Insurance Company, has been
made district manager for the
Massachusetts Mutual, with head-
quarters in Atlanta. He will
work under the state agency and
his territory will cover about four
teen counties in North Georgia.
A somewhat novel method of
curing himself of the drink, habit
has been adopted by a citizen of
Ne* Brunswick, N. J. He hasj
taken an iron-bound pledge ot to
tal abstinence before a notary and
then published the affidavit in a
newspaper. He explains his course
by saying he will be better able to
keep his pledge with the eyes of
the world upon him. It is a new
a Pplication of the beneficent effects
publicity.—Canton Advance.
