THE STATE ELECTION.
The state election passed off
very quietly last week, but Tittle
interest being taken, and only a
light vote being polled. Ail of
the nominees for state house offi
cers were, of. course,* elected.
Judge John S. Candler was elected

Report Agricultural Department.
Seven hundred* and thirty-five
brands of fertilizers have been in
spected by the department of agri
culture in the fiscal year just
closed, according to the report of
Commissioner of Agriculture O.
B. Stevens, issued last week. Tags
for 488,028 tons were sold during
the same.
The report of State Oil Inspec
tor Glascock Barrett, embodied iu
the agricultural report, shows that
5, 488,680 gallons of oil have been
inspected during the year, bring
ing in gross fees amounting to
$26,711.
There are a large number of in
teresting reports and tables in the
little paper bound volume which
Commissioner Stevens has pre
pared.
Banks county, our neighbor,
went Democratic for the first time
in years, the nominees being elect
ed by good majorities. Forsyth
county, Dawson and White are
also Democratic, and the country
hue seen the last of tne populist
party as an organization.
Liberty county, which has elect
ed a negro representative to the
legislature L evcr since the war,
this time redeemed herself and
not only elected a white man to
the general assembly, but also
elected white county officers, as
well. These things are very en
couraging and lead us to hope for
even oetter things in the future.

The Uses of Old Newspapers.
Talk about the uses of the hair
pin, they are as nothing in varie
ty of usefulness to the newspaper.
We are not referring to a news
paper’s undoubted value as an ad
vertising medium, for all the
world recognizes that, nor to the
newsjeatnre of daily paper, but
rather to the printed page itself.
In the first -place, old news
papers are much more convenient
than pine for kindling, and much
cheaper, and as a cleanser they
*re positively invaluable, perform

To wrap up ice in old newspa
pers is to keep it from evaporating
for a long time, and to cover the
flowers and plants in the yard
with paper canopies is to preserve
them from the lavages of frost.
To keep out the cold is one of the
most important functions of the
«dd newspaper, whether it is sewed
between two old blankets, giving
’hem the warmth oi four or five,
o; using it as a pad to be laid down
beneath the mattiDg. Furs and

ing cracks may be made whole by
mixing flo^r paste with scraps ot
