Places Here Wliicli Shame tlie Old
World’s Favored Climes.
We have often heard of “sunny Ita
ly” or the “clear light” of Egypt, says
the Desert; but, believe me, there is no
sunlight there compared with that
which falls upon the upper peaks of
the r Sierra Madre or the uninhabitable
w§§tes of the Colorado desert.
Pm;e sunlight requires for its ex
istence ;pure air, and the old world has
little of it left. When you are in
Rome agajjn and stand upon that hill
where all good Romanists go at sun
set, look out and See how dense is the
atmosphere between you and St. Pe
ter’s dome. That same thick air is all
over Europe, all around the Mediter
ranean, even over in Mesopotamia and
by the banks of the Ganges. It has
been breathed and burned and battle
smoked for 10,000 years.
Ride up and over the high tablelands
of Montana—one can still ride there
for days without seeing a trace of hu
inanity—and how clear and scentless,
how absolutely intangible, that sky
blown.

Turning Bad Luck Inside Out.
There is an old superstition to
the effect that if, when the cry of
$ screech-owl is heard, one’s pockr
efcs are turned inside out, the bad
luek generally attendant upon the
©gy will be averted.
Ordinarily, there is very little
QQmmon sense in superstitions,
but this one seems as an inspira

I£hny one is determined to try,
there is no luck in life so bad that
it cannot be made good if it is
turned wrongside out, or upside
down, the principal thing being to
try and try until the desired re
sult is brought about. It is said
that Dame fortune rarely turns of
her own free will but that the
determined and strong can always,
by persistent effort, make her
show her face upon which there is
always a smile, and each effort
made to tmn her causes her smile
to broaden until the whole world

A LITTLE NONSENSE.
The Story of' a Burglary at the Mo-
Swats’.
Mr. Billiger MeSwat awoke the
other morning to the knowledge
that his home had been entered in
the night by some unauthorized per
son and a portion of his portable
wealth removed.
The burglar had effected an en
trance through the bedroom win
dow and escaped through a rear
window.
In one of the pockets of Mr. Mc-
Swat's trousers there was the sum
of $4, more or less, in silver.
This the burglar had taken.
In another pocket there were a
few one cent pieces.
These in a spirit of humor rare
among operators in his line of busi
ness he had ranged in a row along
the sill of the window through
which he had made-his exit and left
them there.
The trousers he had dropped on
the stairway.
Having ascertained the extent of
his loss, Mr. MeSwat went upstairs
again and aroused‘his wife.

Movable Drops In Diamonds.
It has long been known that dia
monds, especially the class known a*
“rose diamonds,” are likely to explode
if subjected only to what would seem ::
very ordinary degree of heat, such a?
strong rays from the sun, etc. It is
now believed that the explosions arc
the result of the rapid expansion of
certain volatile liquids inclosed in cavi
ties near the center of these precious
stones. A great many diamonds, even
though cut, mounted and worn as gems
of perfection, are still in an unfinished
condition—that is, the liquid drop from
which the stone is being formed has
not as yet deposited all of its “pure
crystals of carbon.” These movable
drops may occasionally be seen with
the naked eye.
When this is the case, a strong m'-

Deafness Cannot Be Cured
by local application as they .cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness,
and that is by'constitutional remedies.
Deafness is caused by an inflamed con
dition of the mucous lining of the
Eustachian Tube. When this tube is
inflamed you have a rumbling sound or
Imperfect hearing, and when it is en
tirely closed. Deafness is the result,
and unless the inflammation can be
taken out aDd this tube restored to its
normal condition, hearing will be de
stroyed forever. Nine cases out of ten
are caused by Catarrh, which is noth
ing but an inflamed condition of the
mucous services.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
for anv case of deafness (caused by
e&tarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s
Catarrh Cure. Sehd for circulars, free.

“Every man,” said the thoughtful
theorist, “ought to keep a diary. It
is only by keeping an actual record
of what you have done that you are
able afterward to ,.see the mistakes
;bu have made and guard against a
repetition of them in the future.”
“Oh, if your diary is only to re
