In the Century the Rev. Henry
M. Wharton tells this anecdote of
Mr. Clemens as a boy, which he
heard in Hannibal, the humorist’s
old home :
A favorite sport of the boys was
to go to a high hill near an" old mill
and' start a loose rock down the
steep side until, gathering fo'rce and
velocity, it finally went crashing
into the water below. One immense
bowlder, partly buried in the hill
side, promised to the mind o^roung
Sam a lot of fun. He called the
boys together and thus addressed
them: “Fellows, this is a bigger
rock than ever rolled down any hill.
It will take lots of work to move
her, but when she starts all the
world can’t stop her. We can lift
her out. I will be the boss, and
you fellows work, and we will see
the greatest thing that ever hap
pened.” Many Sundays were spent
in toiling at the sides and under
neath the great rock. The “boss”

Never in the history of medicine has
the demand for one particular remedy
for female diseases equalled that at

Vegetable Compound, and never
during the lifetime of this wonderful
medicine has the demand for it been
SO great as it is to-day.

A Monster Sawfish.
On a recent trip from Singapore
while in the Carimata strait Chief
Officer Devitt of the steamer New
Guinea baited a shark hook and
caught a tartar. The fish, which
proved to be a gigantic sawfish,
struggled furiously in the water,
and it was feared that it would be
impossible to get it on board. The
tumult caused, in the sea by the
monster’s tail resembled that of a
large steamer’s propeller when part
ly out of the water.. The line was,
however, fixed to the No, 2 winch,
and the fish was hauled alongside.
A wine stock was placed around its
body, and it was hauled on to the
deck and dispatched. When meas
ured,' it was found to be twenty-
seven feet in length. The saw,
which was cut off and preserved,
measures 4y 2 feet in length, a foot
in width and is armed with thirty-
four teeth, varying from one to over
two inches in length. — Straits
