HUE GATNESVii^E NEWS, WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 17, 1902
Senator Perry and Representatives
Thompson and Rogers have returned
from Atlanta, where they have been in
attendance upon the fall session of the
general assembly .
INDUSTRIAL
T, S. Campbell & Son liad their Holi
day opening last Monday, and it was
wonderful to see the many beautiful
and handsome things' they had oh dis
play. Their line cannot: be touched
by any house nearer than Atlanta, and
but few in the Gate City can touch
them. They have toys, pictures, books,
china, and cut glass by the wholesale,
and other things that we cannot think
to mention here. Be sure to pay, them
a visit before spending your Christmas
money, and you had better go soon for
the buyers are thronging their store,
and taking away many of their choic
est -things.

CITY COURT NOT ABOLISHED.
The bill to repeal the act estab
lishing the city court was tabled
at a late hour on the last night of
the session of the legisJature.
Of course, this means that Judge
•G. H. Prior and Solicitor F. M.
Johnson will continue in their
present offices until their success
ors are qualified.
It is a mistaken idea that the
people want the city court abol
ished. We say this from the ex
pressions we have heard since the
bill was tabled. The court is in-
dispensible to the proper adminis
tration of justice here, and the
maintainence of law and order.
The court has done much in
keeping down crime. Speedy
trials are a terror to criminals.
Without the court the Superior
court, would be greatly crowded
with business, and the inconven
ience and expense, which would
necessarily result would be enor
mous. The bill can, and may be
passed at the summer session, but
it would be a grave mistake. The

The force of hands constructing the
Postal telegraph line is between Gaines

this city Saturday afternoon. They
have secured a right of way all north
of here to Charlotte, N. C , excepting
one place on Mr. Bill Ramsey’s farm.
As yet the Company has not closed a
deal for an office in the city.
At Flowery Branch last Saturday
night a large roll of copper wire was
stolen from the company. The officers
got on the track of it immediately, it is
said, and promptly brought the pro
perty to bay.
It was unanimously resolved by the
council at its regular session, held on
the evening of November 27th. 1902,
that all taxes due the City for the year
1902 be collected by December 20, 1902,

At an election held at the armory of
the Candler Horse Guards Mondey

great deal more interest in the troops
than formerly.

if the bill had become a law, it
was contemplated to re-establisb

Solicitor Fletcher Johnson was
seen Saturday by a. representative
of this paper and asked what he
thought about the action of the
legislature in tabling the bill . He
replied that he had uothing to Bay
more than that if the people want
ed the court abolished it was all
right with him.
