It shows the meanness and littleness
of the republican party in refusing to
admit New Mexico and Arizona as
states besanse they are democratic.
Such meanness will not be tolerated
much longer by the good people of this
country.

Some of the anthracite coal barons
care mighty little for Santa Claus and
the spirit of Christmas. When the
employes of the Markles at Harleigh,*
Pa., received their wage envelopes a
day or two ago they found that their
bouse-re»t for the six months thev
weflre on strike had been deduced from
the amount due them. In many cases
there was practically nothing in the
envelope except their rent receipt.

Gainesville Tanning: Co.
Application for charter for the
Gainesville Tanning Co. is made in this
issue. The incorporators are well
known business men, whp have bought
from Inman, Smith & Co. their tan
nery, so long operated in connection
with the shoe factory. They propose
taking hold of this enterprise in ear
nest and making of it a great success.

June that year.
Bnt there seems to 1 be some erroneous
reckoning along here. Senator Bacon’s
successor would have been elected in
October, 1902, if the legislature had not
changed the time of holding its session.
Now he can only be elected in June
1907, but as his successor would not
qualify until December, 1907, there is
nothing in tie way of electing a suc
cessor in June, 1907.
Another objection to the summer
session bill which holds good, however,
and one which has not been urged be
fore is that the judge and solicitors
qualify January 1. and the legislature
has to canvass the return, and that
lengthens the term 12 judges and 18
o.iei tors from January I. to the fourth
Wednesday in June, or a term of six
months.
Senator Skelton, the author of the
bill announces that he will endeavor
to amend the act by providing that the
June 1903 sesion hold only thirty days
and the June 1904 session hold only
twenty days, thus making only fifty
days in all.
