Congressman H. Henry Powers of
the other hand, were loud m their
praise of the way they had been dealt
with by the owners of the land which
they had worked.
The Qui Ilian home is situated in one
of the best sections of Hall county, and
the house has been standing tor 85
years, that is, the main body of it. . It
is in gqpd repair now, though it has
been added to from time to time and is
much larger than it was when origin
nally built. Next summer it will be
torn down and a new and- modern 17
room res.idenee will supplant it. It
will be electric lighted, as the boys
will develop their nearby water-pow
er for that specific purpose. There are
four of the boys; Jim, Bob, George and
■Turner, the last, two named residing at
the old homestead, and the first named
at BeUton. They own in all 10,000 a-
cres in Hall county

There will be many changes among
the business men of the city tomorrow,
the first day of the new y ear. The J*
E. Murphy Co., retires from business,
and the G. F. Turner Co. moves into
the store vacated by the first named
firm. W. R. Canning & Bro. move into
the store now occupied by F. Cinciolo &
Co; the latter move into the store
:pccupied by Carter Bros., and they go
into the store occupied by Canning.
Cinciolo Bros, move into the store
of Whisenant & Eyans, and that firm
moves into a store on Athens street.
The telephone exchange moves to the
second floor of the vGordon building,
and the North Georgia Electric Co.
moves into the building occupied by
the telephone [exchange. The Gaines
ville Medicine Co, will occupy the
second floor of the store of F. Cinciolo
Capt. C. A. Lilly has returned to
Baltimore after two weeks spent here.
Mr. John C. Smitn of Atlanta, spent
last week with his father, Mr. J. W.
Smith.
Mr. William Boone of Atlanta visited
his mother here last week.
Miss Stella Huff of Waco, Texas is
on a visit ro Mrs. J. C. Boone, and Mrs.
E. E. Kimbrough.
The public schools of the city will
reopen on next Monday morning after
a recreation of two weeks.
Mr. Lewis C. Oliver has returned to
Emory college after a week spent with
his sister, Miss Bertha Oliver.
Miss Louise Lott has returned to her
dutiesat Brenau, after spending the
holidays with her parents in Columbus.
Miss Corinne Baldwin has returned
to her home in Perry after a visit to
Misses Marion and Carolyn Chambers.
Miss Ruth Marion entertained the
members of her class in the high school
at her home Monday night. The
young people had a delightful time.
A dance that was very much enjoyed
was the one given at the Armory on
Monday night. Wurm’s Orchestra of
Atlanta furnished the music and a
large crowd attended.
The Brenau college girls who spent
the holidays at home returned to the
city the early part of this week. School
reopened this morning, and several
new names have been added to the
enrollment.

Save a very pleasant reception at their
home on Green street Friday evening.
A large number of guests were present

Mrs. T. B. Lewis entertained very
e legantly Christmas night at her home
on Green street in honor of her sister,
hliss Ruby Lewis, of Atlanta.
Mrs. A. W. Van Hoose entertained a
tumber of friends at dinner on Christ
mas day ? t Brenau college. The din
s'hall and parlors were tastefully
decorated and the occasion was most

On motion mayor was authorized to
pay three managers of city election
held Dee. 9,1902.
On motion the street committee was
instructed to see Mr. Singleton and ar
range with^him about making a survey
of the city.
On motion the mayor was authorized
to pay Dr, J. W. Bailey $15.00 for thir
ty cords wood cut from his land for
the city.
The returns tor election held Dee., 9,
1902, for three aldermen were opened.
The following gentlemen having
received a majority of the votes cast
were declared elected to serve the city
of Gainesville, Ga., for the years 1903
and 1904: C. A. Dozier, First Ward;
John A. Pierce, Second Ward; Howard
Thompson, Third Ward. No further
business on motion council adjourned.

Mr. John Holmes of Charleston S. C.
visited his sister, Miss Lieze Holmes,
last week.
,Mr. J. A. Adams, of the Standard Oil
Co., has returned from a trip to friends
at Elberton.
Miss Mary Annie Henderson of At
lanta, visited her grandfather, Dr. J.
W. Oslin, last week.
Mr. Walter Winburn, of Birming
ham, is on a visit to his parents, Mr,
and Mrs. W. R. Winburn.
Sam Dorsey, who is with the Postal
Telegraph Cable Co., spent last week
with his mother, Mrs. A. B. C. Dorsey.
Mr. Hartman Grigg, who has been
with the Pacolet mills for sometime,
leaves the employ of the company to
day .
Mrs. C. E. Lambdin and Miss Annie
Lambdin have returned home to
Barnesville after a visit to Mrs. A. S.
Hard3^.
Miss Carrie Johnson gave a verv
deligxful reception last Saturday after
noon from 3:30 to 6:30 at the home of
her father, Col. Fletcher M. Johnson.
Rev. D. S. Grindle Called.
On last Sunday eveiiing the Mont
gomery Memorial Baptist church at
the Gainesville Cotton Mill called Rev.
D. S. Grindle to serve them for the
year 1903 He will preach for them on
the 3rd Sunday night and on the 4th
Sunday at 3 P. M. in each month. The
church made a wise selection for there
is not a better man, preacher or pastor
than Bro. Grindle.
