elected chairman of the commitee;
Dr. J. A. Parsons was eleoted sec

elected assistant secretary. A
committee was put in charge of
the work of preparing and distrib

of Watson and Tibbies and the
Watson electors.
A letter was read from the head
quarters of the Populist party
saying that Hon. Thomas. E. Wat
son would speak in Gainesville on
the 7th. of November, thus clos

Something
on Which You
Can Depend .
Gainesville is to have a new
railroad. As to who will build it
cannot Pie definitely stated at
present, but in all likelihood it
will be constructed by the South
ern railway. It is to run from
Gainesville westward to a point
on the A. K. & N., and perhaps
thence to Rome. In fact, the
survey made last year by the
Southern was from Gainesville to
Keith’s Ferry, Silver City, Bar-
retteville and Ledbetter’s Bridge,
connecting with the A. K. & N.,
at either Ball Ground, Nelson or
Tate, proceeding thence to Rome
via Cartersville.
This would give Gainesville a
Western outlet and suoh a road
would develop ttye large and un
told marble deposits in Cherokee
county, the vast fanning interests
of Forsyth, Dawson and Cherokee
counties, the iron and manganese
deposits of Bartow, a section now
held back by inadequate railroad
facilities. The development of
the timber interest of the moun
tain comities would of itself be
immense.
The construction of this road
would Boon nr'ke Gainesville one
of the largest and best cities of the
Piedmont belt. Iustead of the
congestion of traffio at Atlanta,
this would be diverted at. Rome
over the new line to be distributed
to the Atlauta-Washiugton main
lime of the Southern and Gaines-
tile Midland railway at this
point, aud the Seaboard at Winder
or Athens. In addition, the con
nection with the Louisville &
Nashville at Ball Ground, Nelson
or Tate would likewise throw the
Western freights over this line for
distribution at Gainesville to the
Southern aud Gainesville Mid
land.
The distance from Gainesville
to Rome by the survey made laet
year by the Southern railway com
pany is 87 miles. The distance
from Gainesville to Ball Ground,
Nelson or Tate is approximately
37 miles. It is estimated that the
road from this point to Rome
could be constructed at a cost of
$2,000,000. It is said that those
the head of the Southern rail
way system have given their as*
eeut to tho enterprise, aud that
before many moons work will be
under way.
A large and enthusiastic meet
ing of the citizens of Gainesville,
was held at the oourt house Thurs
day night in furtherance of the pro
jeofc. It was unanimously decid
ed to lend every ifesietance to the
Southern railway authorities in
securing right-of-way, eto. and do
whatever elee was necessary to
the construction of the
Gainesville is vitally la
in this matter. As it is,
Athens is made the “basing point”
for freight rates, and Gainesville
is laboring under a disadvantage
thereby. As this is the distribut
ing point for all this mountain
country and it J s business men are
largely dependent upon this trade
for sustainauce, it is certainly
right tor them to have to sub
to a rate made for a point
