Wright, Brown and Smith Tried
And Fined.
The Mayor’s court was largely
attended last Saturday afternoon i
to hear the trial of the* cases
against Zed Wright, J. H. Brown
and C.VL. Smith, who were char?
ged with assaulting L. H. Jenkips
near the old fair grounds on the
New Holland road Wednesday
night of last week.
Zed Wright entered a plea of
guilty to being drunk and fighting
and) as he turned state’s evidence
and* told' the whole story of the
assault, a light fine of $10 and
costs was imposed upon him. He
was also bound over to the city
court Under a bond of $200 tor as
sault and battery.
Smith was tried and* found
guilty of fighting and disorderly,
and as Brown’s attorney agreed to
letrhis case take the same course
as the- former’s, he too, was ad
judged guilty and a fine of $25 and
costs was imposed upon each.
They were also hound over to the
city court under a bond of $200
each to answer to the phargeof as
sault and battery.
The evidence as brought out at
the trial was to the effect that Zed
Wright, Smith, Brown, Red Chas
tain, a man* named “Jack”, B. H.
Jenkins and a negro, left the city
at Davidson & Go’s, corner, going
out Spring street. They were all
drinkmg and when they* reached
the junction of Spring and Broad
streets, some one of the number
knocked Jenkins down and beat
tiim up. Jenkins, testified that'he
was drunk and could not say who
it was that hit him or how many
times* he was hit. The object of
the trip Put the street Was to have
some fun out of the negro, Jenk
ins said, whom he was going to
hypnotize; i

they had anything to do with the

A new bridge will soon be erec
ted across the branch of the pub
lic road at New Holland, 30x50
feet. The commissioners are now

negotiating with . contractors, to
build the bridge. .This bridge will
not only be a great convenience to
the public^ but will also connect
the mill town, there being a large
number of cottages on the side of
the branch next to the railroad.
A sixty, foot bridge has just been
built at Caney Fork ford. A
bridge has been needed .there for
a long time and the people living
in tl at section are very glad the
commissioners gave them one.
At Mauldins Mills a forty-eight
foot bridge has also. been erected
recently, which will prove a great
benefit to the people of the com
munity and the traveling public
generally.

At the junction of the New
bridge and Clark’s bridge roads
an important change was made
this week. A new road was cut
Mr. H. A. Terrell will move
from the Dupre place, where he
has resided for several years, to
the Strickland place, at East
Broad and Sycamore streets, on
the first of October. Mr. E. H.
Jewell will move from the Young

place on Academy street, to the
Dupre place, and Mrs. J. A. Young
will move into her home vacated
by Mr. Jewell. Mrs. Frierson will
also occupy part of the house

BUILDING GOING ON.
Mr.M.'C. Brown is remodeling

Washington street recently ‘occu

will again move into it after its
completion. Two more rooms are
being added and otjier improve
ments are being made.
Mr.'A. G. Dorsey is also adding
more rooms and improving his
place »af East Washington and
Race streets. He will move his
family into it as soon as the house
js completed. Mr. Wood side and
his bride will occupy* the Dorsey
pi ace. on West Spf ing street, recent
ly purchased by him, upon return
ing from, their bridai tour.
Mr. Leon Gaines will erect a
nice cottage on Athen^streefc at an
early date. Much of the material
is already on the. ground and work
will soon begin.

Mr. B. D. Langford will in a few
days begin the construction of a
store hogse at the East end of the
Vesta- mill factory street. The
building will be 20x50 feet.
' Mr. George McDonald is erect
ing a nice cottage on Race street,
and will have it ready for occu
pancy soon.
’Judge W. N. Dyer has about
completed his new home at the old
Gobb place* and moved in this
week. He is going to do some
more building on his place before

for a new trial and the motion will
be heard by Judge Prior to
day. They were unable to pay
their fines in either court or to
give bond, consequently they are
still in the lock up.
Zed Wright’s fine hae been paid
and he has given bond. His case
will come up at the November
term of the city court. '

Yes Sloan was arrested at Anti
och campground last Sunday by
special bailiff W. . E. Smith for
disturbing public worship. When
arrested he had a pistol in his
pocket, therefore a case carrying
concealed weapons was docketed
against him. He will be tried at
an early term *of Hall city court.
