LOCATSTATE The Times, Gainesville, Georgia | gainesvilletimes.com Monday, November 5, 2018 7A High school halftime entertainment included racially insensitive term BY ARLINDA SMITH BROADY The Atlanta Journal-Constitution The halftime show at the Friday night football game between Gwin nett County’s Brookwood High and DeKalb County’s Lakeside High had spectators talking about more than the score. Some band members assembled themselves to spell out the word ‘coon’ using instrument covers that are normally used to spell ‘broncos,’ the school mascot. In a letter to students, parents and the community Brookwood Princi pal William Bo Ford Jr. apologized for the “completely unacceptable, racial term. “ A concerned resident sent a photo and a copy of the letter to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Ford explained how the incident took place: “For those of you who have attended our games, you may have noticed that the sousaphones (a brass instrument similar to a tuba) wear covers in the stands to show school spirit. The covers spell out BRONCOS and some of them feature our Bronco mascot. Our band does not wear these covers on the field because they shield the sound and because during the halftime show our band members move around the field and do not stand in the same order as they do in the stands. That said, last night during what was already a very busy senior night, we experienced several personnel challenges that resulted in our band director not being on the field when the band took the field. With that in mind, when the sou- saphone players took the field, they did not follow band rules and normal ‘It does not reflect the standards and beliefs of our school and community.’ William Bo Ford Jr. Brookwood Principal practice, and instead, they left the covers on their instruments.” In the apology, Ford said, the event is under investigation there will be “disciplinary action with the students involved.” He wrote: “Not only was the appearance of this term during our halftime show hurtful and disrespectful to audience members, it also was disappoint ing, as it does not reflect the stan dards and beliefs of our school and community. We are a very inclusive commu nity and we care about all of our students. We are concerned that this situation occurred and are commit ted to taking steps to ensure this does not happen again.” Ford didn’t mention if there will be any actions taken against school staff but said halftime procedures will be reviewed. Gwinnett County Schools spokes woman Sloan Roach said she doesn’t anticipate any action with staff and couldn’t “speculate as to discipline for students as the school’s investiga tion is still ongoing.” UNG ■ Continued from 1A development training, work ing on preparing her resume, performing mock job inter views and learning other soft skills. “I tell them you’re inter viewing from the moment you step into the first school we place you in,” Caputo said. So, make a good first impression, he added, because the internship com ponent of the teacher certi fication program could turn into a job referral. According to UNG, future program enrollees will spend at least two semesters on the Gainesville campus before finishing their degree with a semester of teaching. “Stepping into this field, I feel right at home,” Kennon said. Kennon said she ran track and was a member of the cheerleading squad at her high school, and sports is a family pastime. Her father was a little league coach, and weekends are spent watching the big games on television. “We’re a very athletic family,” she added. “I feel that also helped guide me in this direction. It’s something that’s second nature to me.” It’s not always been easy for Kennon, though. She admits to having some anxiety, for example, about working with elementary-age students, but that has turned out to be a positive experi ence, too. “They are just so fantas tic,” she said. Kennon’s own enthusiasm has impressed Caputo, who observed her patiently on a recent afternoon as Kennon directed students in the fun damentals of badminton. “We prep them to be health and physical educa tion teachers,” and not just coaches, Caputo said. Kennon said she has felt supported and her confi dence has grown now that she’s working directly with students. “I get really nervous when I hear I’ve got feedback com ing my way,” she said. “But it definitely helps you grow .. into the type of educator you want to become.” OBITUARIES Pearl Nash Davis Died Nov. 3,2018 Pearl Nash Davis, age 93, of Buford, Ga., passed away Satur day, Nov. 3, 2018.
