Phil Booth scored a
career-high 23 points, and
No. 9 Villanova routed Quin
nipiac 86-53 on Saturday
night.
Booth made three of Vil
lanova’s 12 3-pointers. The
Wildcats (2-0) shot 47.1 per
cent (32 for 68) from the
floor.
Villanova led by as many
as 37. The Wildcats (2-0)
outrebounded the Bobcats
50-29, including 20 offensive
rebounds that led to 26 sec
ond-chance points.
Collin Gillespie went 4
for 6 from 3-point range and
finished with 16 points at
Wells Fargo Center. Senior
forward Eric Paschall had
11 points on 4-of-6 shooting,
added eight rebounds and
three assists.
Quinnipiac (0-1), coached
by former Villanova assis
tant Baker Dunleavy, made
just 34 percent of its shots.
Cameron Young scored 18
points for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac made one of
its first 11 attempts from
the floor, helping Villanova
build an 18-3 lead less than
10 minutes into the game.
Villanova used a 3-pointer
from freshman Saddiq Bey
right before the buzzer
sounded to take a 47-20 lead
into halftime.
The Wildcats, at that
point, had more points on 3s
than the Bobcats had total
points.
NO. 19 MICHIGAN 56,
HOLY CROSS 37: Ignas
Brazdeikis watched help
lessly as his future Michigan
teammates got drubbed in
last season’s NCAA champi
onship game.
On Saturday night, Braz
deikis finally got a chance to
help boost the Wolverines’
struggling offense.
Brazdeikis scored 19
points, Charles Matthews
added 20 and No. 19 Michi
gan held off Holy Cross.
The freshman from Mono,
Ontario, scored 15 points in
the first 4:49 of the second
half as part of a 32-8 game
changing run that gave
Michigan a commanding
lead.
“I need to keep that going
because that’s the player
I’ve always been my entire
life,” Brazdeikis said. “As
long as I continue that men
tality, things will happen.”
Michigan (2-0) now
heads into a NCAA final
rematch with Villanova on
Wednesday.
“They’re hunters,” Michi
gan coach John Beilein said
of Brazdeikis and Matthews.
“We just really simplified
our attack in the second
half and just tried to go off
penetration. We weren’t
outsmarting them. We just
had to go with some speed,
some quickness, and cer
tainly Iggy got us off to a nice
start.”
Reserve forward Connor
Niego scored 13 points for
Holy Cross (1-1), all on 5-of-5
shooting in the first half,
including 3 for 3 on 3-point-
ers. He did not score in the
second half, missing two
shots.
Jacob Grandison scored
12 points for the Crusaders,
who led by as many as nine
points in the first half and
led 24-18 at halftime.
Michigan forced 16 turn
overs in the game and held
Holy Cross to 13 points in the
second half.
But the Wolverines shot
poorly, finishing 3 of 19 (15.8
percent) on 3-pointers. How
ever, they had a big edge on
free throws, shooting 17 of
21 (80.9 percent), while Holy
Cross was 1 for 3.
Isaiah Livers had seven
points and 10 rebounds for
Michigan, as six Wolverines
scored.
NO. 24 PURDUE 84,
BALL STATE 75: One big
second-half push by Purdue
was enough.
Carsen Edwards scored
23 points on 8-for-22 shoot
ing, and the 24th-ranked
Boilermakers pulled away
from Ball State for a victory
on Saturday night.
Edwards struggled with
his shooting stroke at times
but managed to contribute in
a variety of ways. The junior
guard had five rebounds,
five assists and blocked a
shot.
Purdue trailed 48-45
after Kyle Mailers made a
3-pointer for Ball State with
18 minutes left. But the Boil
ermakers responded with a
24-4 run.
Nojel Eastern capped the
decisive stretch with a pair
of layups, making it 69-52
with 11:28 remaining.
Haarms had 16 points for
Purdue (2-0) despite batting
foul trouble. Dartmouth
transfer Evan Boudreaux
added 14 points and seven
rebounds, and Eastern fin
ished with 12 points and nine
boards.
Tayler Persons led Ball
State with 19 points and eight
rebounds. But he was shut
down after Purdue coach
Matt Painter put Eastern on
him in the second half.
“He’s 6-foot-6, an athlete
and a really good defender,”
Persons said about Eastern.
“It’s tough.... I’ve got to take
advantage of when other
people are on me.”
GOLF
Kuchar builds
4-shot lead
at Mayakoba
Golf Classic
For three days, Matt
Kuchar has felt in total con
trol of his game at the Maya
koba Golf Classic.
It shows in his score.
For the second straight
day, Kuchar had enough
birdies to atone for one rough
hole, and it carried him to a
6-under 65 to set the 54-hole
tournament record and build
a four-shot lead as he tries
to end more than four years
without a PGA Tour victory.
Kuchar was at 20-under
193, breaking by three shots
his personal best on the tour,
and by one shot is 54-hole
score to par.
“I felt really, really good
for three days,” Kuchar said.
“I mean, 20 under is my best
54-hole total. I felt in control
of my ball striking. I felt in
control of driving, the iron
play, the putting. It’s been a
great three days.”
Kuchar saved par from
just off the green at the 18th
to keep his four-shot margin
over Whee Kim, who had a
66.
The last time Kuchar had
a four-shot lead going into
the final round was the 2014
Houston Open, and he wound
up losing in a playoff when
Matt Jones made a 45-foot
birdie putt on the last hole
and then chipped in from 40
yards in a playoff.
The other two times
Kuchar had the
54-hole lead, he won
the Memorial in
2013 one week after
losing a one-shot
lead at Colonial.
“You know the
deal, though. You
have to go play good
golf,” Kuchar said.
“I can’t go out there
and think a whole
bunch of pars are
going to get me in
the winner’s circle.
I’ve still got to make
a good number of
birdies, and with
that, somewhat have
the pedal down.”
Richy Werenski and
Danny Lee each shot 67
and were five shots back,
followed by a group that
included PGA Tour rookie
of the year Aaron Wise (63)
and Cameron Champ (69).
Champ, who played in the
final group with Kuchar and
Lee, already won this sea
son at the Sanderson Farms
Championship.
Garcia keeps lead
in South Africa
Sergio Garcia leads by two
strokes going into the final
round of the Nedbank Golf
Challenge and is on course
for a wire-to-wire win at the
penultimate event of the
European Tour season.
Garcia improved his 1-shot
overnight lead over Louis
Oosthuizen, although the
gap would have been bigger
if not for a two-shot swing
Oosthuizen’s way on the final
hole of the third round at
Gary Player Country Club
on Saturday.
Garcia bogeyed
No. 18 for the sec
ond straight round
after sending his
approach into the
grandstand. He
signed for a l-under
71 and 10 under
overall. Oosthuizen
made birdie on the
last to finish with a
72 and two off Gar
cia when he was
four behind on the
last tee.
Thomas Detry,
Mikko Korhonen
and two-time Ned
bank winner Lee
Westwood are tied for third,
three shots off the lead on 7
under. Ross Fisher is a fur
ther shot back.
Garcia birdied his second
and third holes but found it
tough at the back end of his
round again, with his way
ward approach to the last
green flying high into the
rows of spectators up on the
stands.
Oosthuizen took advantage
with just his second birdie of
the day, although he ben
efited from a fortunate kick
off the right fringe of the
green to set up his birdie putt.
Garcia is seeking a second
straight win after triumph
ing at home at the Andalucia
Valderrama Masters last
month, and a victory by the
Spaniard would be the sec
ond wire-to-wire success of
the season after Eddie Pep-
perell at the British Masters.
Garcia has won twice at Sun
City, but the last of those two
titles was in 2003.
