Heavy rain, severe weather possible on Gulf Coast
Associated Press
MOBILE, Ala. — Forecasters
are warning about the potential
for drenching rain and severe
weather on the northern Gulf
Coast.
The National Weather Service
issued a flash flood watch Monday
for much of southern Alabama,
the Florida Panhandle and south
western Georgia. That includes
areas where thousands of people
are still trying to recover from
Hurricane Michael’s devastating
landfall last month.
As much as 6 inches of rain is
possible through Tuesday night,
and the forecast says many areas
will get 4 inches.
Nearly 3 inches of rain fell by
Monday afternoon near Pensac
ola, Florida, and rainfall totals of
more than 2 inches were common
in north Georgia. Water covered
fields in eastern Alabama.
The weather forced cities
including Mobile and Huntsville in
Alabama and Dallas to cancel Vet
erans Day parades. A shortened
parade that included a marching
Army unit, cars decorated with
U.S. flags and youth groups moved
down a wet street during a break
in the rain in Pensacola, Florida,
but video showed relatively few
onlookers.
The weather service issued a
tornado watch for Monday morn
ing much of Louisiana, southern
Mississippi and coastal Alabama
into the Panhandle. Radar indi
cated possible twisters near Lee-
ville, Louisiana and Gulf Breeze
Florida, prompting tornado warn
ings, but there were no immediate
reports of damage.
Meanwhile, forecasters said a
new tropical weather threat was
brewing in the Atlantic.
The National Hurricane Center
said a tropical wave located about
200 miles east of the Leeward
Islands had an 80 percent chance
of becoming a tropical depression
or a tropical storm this week.
The system was expected to
pass north of Puerto Rico, His
paniola and the southeastern
Bahamas.
Church to name Alabama, Mississippi clergy accused of abuse
Associated Press
MOBILE, Ala. — Roman Catho
lic church offices in Alabama and
Mississippi will publicly release the
names of clergy members accused
of sexually abusing minors over
decades, church leaders said.
A statement from Archbishop
Thomas J. Rodi of Mobile said each
of the four Catholic dioceses in the
two states will report the names of
people who were removed from
ministry after being accused of
abuse.
Diocese offices are in Birming
ham, Alabama, plus Jackson and
Biloxi in Mississippi, and the arch
diocese is in Mobile.
The Mobile office will release
names involved in accusations dat
ing back to 1950, Rodi said. He did
not say when the list would be made
public.
“It is a time-consuming effort to
examine each clergy personnel file
from the last almost seven decades.
This effort is under way and will be
completed as quickly as possible,”
Rodi said in the statement released
Thursday.
The Biloxi diocese said it would
forward any of its names to the
office in Jackson should cases pre
date its 1977 founding.
“We join with all people of good
will in praying for victims of abuse
and earnestly urge all institutions,
public and private, to shine a light
of truth on a serious societal prob
lem,” a statement from Bishop
Louis F. Kihneman III said.
About 86,000 people are mem
bers of Roman Catholic churches in
the two states, which had 126 resi
dent priests last year, according to
an annual report released by the
church office in Mobile.
In June, the Diocese of Jackson
released the name of a church dea
con who was accused of inappropri
ate sexual contact with a girl in the
early 1980s.
A grand jury report released
earlier this year in Pennsylvania
detailed decades of abuse and
cover-up in six dioceses there. It
alleges that more than 1,000 chil
dren had been abused through the
years by about 300 priests.

Man broke into

residents
A Georgia man is accused of
breaking into an Augusta home,
rummaging around and then
jumping naked into bed with two
residents.
News outlets report 29-year-
old Christopher Lindner has been
arrested on charges including crimi
nal trespassing. A Columbia County
Sheriff’s Office’s report says he
broke in last week and jumped into
bed with the couple, who was watch
ing television.
It says they fled the home with
Lindner in pursuit. It says respond
ing deputies found Lindner lying in
a roadway and he fled. Authorities
approached again, and an aggres
sive Lindner was pepper-sprayed to
no effect. Lindner then tried to enter
a law enforcement vehicle, was hit
was a metal baton and arrested.
The report says Lindner admitted
to being on methamphetamines. It’s
unclear if he has a lawyer.
SPARTANBURG, S.C.
Police seek man in bar

Police are looking for a suspect in
a shooting at a South Carolina sports
bar that killed one man and injured
two women.
The Spartanburg Police Depart
ment said in a news release that offi
cers were called to “Gravy’s Grill”
around 1 a.m. Saturday and found
the victims.
Police said 25-year-old Damien
Michael Young of Spartanburg died
Saturday at Spartanburg Medical
Center. Two women were being
treated at the hospital.

Investigators think Young knew the

CHARLESTON, S.C.
Man gets life sentence
in fatal home invasion
A man has been sentenced to life
in prison in the shooting death of a
man during a home invasion nearly
two years ago.
News outlets reported that
20-year-old Joseph Lamar Brown
Jr. of Summerville was convicted
late last week of murder and other
charges in the 2016 death of 46-year-
old John Pritchard during a botched
robbery attempt at his home in
Lincolnville.
Brown was arrested in January
2017.
Prosecutors said Brown shot
Pritchard in the neck after he tried
to defend himself when Brown
entered Pritchard’s home and
demanded cash. Prosecutors said
Brown knew Pritchard had recently
received a large cash settlement
after a car crash.
Brown was tried this summer, but
a judge declared a mistrial after the
jury was unable to reach a verdict.
RINGGOLD, LA
Sheriff: 5-year-old
finds mother shot dead
from stray bullet
Authorities say a woman’s 5-year-
old child found her shot dead after
a stray bullet went through her
apartment.
Bienville Parish Sheriff John Bal-
lance tells KSLA-TV 31-year-old Sha-
nette Carter was shot Saturday night
in Ringgold. Ballance says a fight in
the complex’s parking lot led to the
shooting.
Authorities believe two people
were targeted during the shooting as
they were running up a stairwell to
get away from the fight, and one bul
let went through Carter’s apartment
as she was sitting on her couch.
Authorities say the child came
out to tell neighbors the woman
wouldn’t wake up. The neighbors
went to check and realized she was
dead.
One of the people targeted was
shot but their condition, as well
as the other person’s, is unclear.
Authorities are investigating.

he told wildlife officials he acciden
tally shot his friend while they were
