Black Friday:
Shop it or skip it?

A solid 70 percent of Americans plan to shop on
Black Friday this year, according to a recent NerdWal-
let study conducted by The Harris Poll.
But the nature of a day centered around shopping
can almost inevitably lead to overspending.
Here are three ways to tell whether participating in
Black Friday is really right — or actually wrong — for
you.
CONSIDER WHAT YOU’RE BUYING
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is known
for long lines, big crowds and low prices.
And while the shopping holiday often does deliver
unbeatable deals on things like electronics, certain
items are cheaper at other times of the year.
Clothing is generally a bargain on Black Friday,
but some clothing reaches its lowest price off-season,
according to Charlie Graham, founder and CEO of
Shop It to Me, a sale alert app.
“If you’re really penny-pinching, you can find bet
ter deals when items go on clearance outside of Black
Friday and Cyber Monday,” Graham says of some
apparel.
Think buying swimsuits at the end of winter or sweat
ers in the middle of summer.
TIP: Consider the items you want this Black Friday
and write them down. Then, check Black Friday ads to
see if those products will be on sale. Retailers usually
release their ads ahead of time — online, by email or
in the mail. If you don’t see what you want at the price
you want, think about waiting to buy.
Company bans artificial ingredients as natural pet food market grows

Demand for healthy, natural food is
extending from humans to their pets.
Petco announced Tuesday it will
stop selling dog and cat food and treats
with artificial colors, flavors and pre
servatives, both online and at its nearly
1,500 stores in the U.S. and Puerto
Rico.
“We are making sure we are always
taking the nutritional high ground,”
Petco CEO Ron Coughlin told The
Associated Press.
Petco’s move, the first of its kind
among major pet stores, comes at a
time when sales of natural pet foods
are steadily rising.
Natural pet products still account
for a small portion of the U.S. mar
ket share but growth has more than
doubled to 6.5 percent between 2013
and 2017, according to Nielsen, a data
company. Nielsen said sales of pet food
free of genetically modified ingredi
ents jumped 29 percent last year. Sales
of pet food without artificial preserva
tives and colors grew 4 percent.
Americans spent $69.5 billion on
their pets last year, up 4 percent from
the year before, according to the
American Pet Products Association.
Pet food has long mimicked human
food, says John Owen, a senior food
analyst for market researcher Min-
tel. In 1959, for example, Gravy Train
dog food was introduced so dogs could
enjoy gravy too.
As human tastes have grown more
sophisticated, so have their demands
for their pets, Owen said.
For dogs, there are bags of organic,
vegetarian and grain-free food. Some
brands claim to mimic ancestral diets,
with kibbles made from venison or
wild boar. Cans of cat food feature tila-
pia, rabbit and pumpkin.
Sensing the growing trend, two big
food companies — J.M. Smucker Co.
and General Mills — spent billions to
acquire the natural pet food brands
Nutrish and Blue Buffalo earlier this
year.
Ashley Murphy, a 33-year-old proj
ect manager in Atlanta, has been
watching the amount of sugar and pre
servatives in her own food. That made
her question the ingredients in the food
she feeds her dog Maddie, a Jack Rus
sell mix.
Murphy recently switched to Cani-
dae Grain Free Pure Ancestral dry
dog food after reading the ingredients
on lots of bags. Murphy wanted a food
with more meat, fewer fillers like
grains and corn, and fewer chemicals.
“Minus some of the minerals and
some of the fermentation products at
the very bottom of the list, I can pro
nounce every single ingredient in her
new food,” said Murphy, who said she
doesn’t mind spending more for the
food.
Owen says young people like Mur
phy are driving the trend in natural pet
food. He expects it will keep growing
and lead to even more “natural” inno
vations, like freeze-dried raw food.
Coughlin says the majority of pet
food Petco sells now doesn’t contain
artificial ingredients. Still, the change
isn’t insignificant; Petco sells around
$100 million worth of dog and cat food
with artificial ingredients each year.
Coughlin said food with those ingre
dients will start coming off the shelves
in January. Some suppliers are refor
mulating their food; others simply
won’t sell through Petco anymore, he
said. Food with artificial ingredients
that isn’t sold by May will be donated
to animal shelters.
Eventually the store plans to expand
its ban on artificial ingredients to foods
it sells for other animals, he said.
Safety group names ‘worst holiday toys’

the holiday season.

ing Harm, or W.A.T.C.H.,
unveiled its 46th annual
list of the 10 “worst toys”
Tuesday at Franciscan Chil
dren’s Hospital in Boston.
Joan Siff, the nonprofit
organization’s president,
said many of the toys on the
list represent choking, eye
and other safety hazards
that surface year after year,
despite the group’s efforts.
Siff advised parents to
shop “defensively” and not
be lulled into a false sense
of security because a toy is
made by a familiar brand
or sold at an established
retailer.
One child is treated in
a U.S. emergency room
every three minutes for a
toy-related injury, accord
ing to the Center for Injury
and Research at Nationwide
Children’s Hospital.

year’s list, for example, is
marketed to children ages
two and above, but includes
a removable tutu and head-
band that can be choking
hazards, said James Swartz,
a trial lawyer who serves as
W.A.T.C.H.’s director.
A slender mallet that
comes with VTech’s cat
erpillar-shaped electronic
xylophone — a toy made
for children as young as 18
months old — is another
similar choking threat, he
said.
Other toys on the list
included a Nerf gun that
fires soft discs, a “stomp
rocket” that launches foam-
tipped projectiles up to 200
feet in the air and a plastic
“cutting fruit” set.
The cutting set, which
includes a toy knife made
out of rigid plastic, is made
for children who are older
than 2.
CONSIDER WHY YOU’RE BUYING
Of those who plan to shop in stores this Black Friday,
42 percent said they plan to do so because they enjoy
the in-store hype (e.g., doorbuster deals, camping out
side of stores the night before), according to the Nerd-
Wallet study.
Enjoying this annual tradition is one thing, but going
shopping “just because” isn’t always a good idea.
Even if you’ve set a budget before putting on your
comfiest sneakers and standing in the cold, you may be
susceptible to making additional purchases once you’re
among the merchandise.
On Black Friday, retailers compete for a share of
your wallet, says Jeff Inman, a marketing professor at
the University of Pittsburgh and editor-in-chief of the
Journal of Consumer Research.
Traditionally, retailers draw in Black Friday shop
pers with a few great deals — called “loss leaders” —
and hope they’ll buy additional items as well.
Imagine going for a TV and leaving with clothing and
Christmas decorations, too.
While Inman says he hasn’t always seen shoppers
with huge baskets on Black Friday, he does point to toys
as one category where shoppers may spring for some
thing even if they didn’t see it in a Black Friday ad.
For example, while in the store, you may come
across a toy and decide to buy it for your niece for
Christmas. This isn’t necessarily an impulse purchase;
you already planned to buy a gift for your niece. But
since you didn’t know the exact item you wanted to
buy, he calls selecting this toy an “impulse allocation”
of your holiday shopping budget.
This isn’t a problem if you can afford it, but be con
scious of this possibility when you step foot in the store.
TIP: Think about why you want to shop on Black Fri
day, and whether you’re financially prepared. If you’re
not sure you can resist the temptation to overshoot your
budget, consider skipping.
CONSIDER WHEN YOU’RE BUYING
Finally, plan your timing. With deals launching ear
lier each year, some Black Friday sales really happen
the whole week of Thanksgiving, according to Graham
from Shop It to Me.
“To compete with each other, the retailers have
been pushing their sales earlier and earlier during that
week,” Graham says.
Because of this, sometimes shoppers can get Black
Friday-level prices before Black Friday.
TIP: Although this might not be true for every prod
uct category, monitor sales in the days leading up to
Black Friday for an early shot at a good deal.
TO STAY OR TO GO?
Once you decide the what, why and when of your
Black Friday shopping, you’ll be able to decide whether
you should join the crowds or stay on the couch.
