Abrams, Gillum
oppose Trump
judge pick in N.C.
After losing close governor’s
races in Georgia and Florida, Sta
cey Abrams and Andrew Gillum
are joining other black leaders to
oppose one of President Donald
Trump’s picks for a lifetime fed
eral judgeship.
Abrams and Gillum say in a
joint statement Tuesday that the
Senate should reject Thomas
Farr’s nomination to a district
court in North Carolina. The
Democrats say Farr has a “dis
criminatory ideology” that threat
ens the voting rights of nonwhites.
As a Republican attorney, Farr
defended North Carolina laws
that federal courts have found
discriminatory against black
voters.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch
McConnell wants to confirm Farr
in the current lame duck session.
He would fill a seat left open after
Republicans blocked two African-
American women nominated by
former President Barack Obama.
Lawsuit against jail gets
class action status
A federal judge has approved
class action status for a lawsuit
challenging the release policy of a
jail in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitu
tion reported the ruling by U.S.
District Judge Michael L. Brown
this month means others can join
the lawsuit challenging the Fulton
County jail policy.
A number of people sued, say
ing they were held more than 24
hours after they should have been
released. The lawsuit says Fulton
County requires deputies to look
up detainees in a state database
before they’re released. The law
suit says there is no state or federal
requirement for the checks.
The lawsuit says when the data
base was down several days in
2014, the sheriff’s office waited
until the system was online before
releasing people.
Sheriff Ted Jackson’s office
wouldn’t comment on the lawsuit.
School blocks Chick-
fil-A as dining option
Students at a private university in
New Jersey can eat more chicken
as long as it’s not Chick-fil-A.
Rider University removed the
Georgia-based restaurant from a
survey asking students what restau
rants they would like on campus,
“based on the company’s record
widely perceived to be in opposi
tion to the LGBTQ community.”
The fast-food chain was included
in previous surveys.
Chick-fil-A says it has “no pol
icy of discrimination against any
group,” and that its corporate pur
pose is “to glorify God by being
a faithful steward of all that is
entrusted to us.”
Rider says it understands some
may view the decision as a “form
of exclusion.” But the school says it
wanted to be “faithful to our values
of inclusion.”
The university plans to hold a
campus forum on the issue.
DECATUR
Bomb, gun threats lock
down school district
Police say multiple schools were
on lockdown in an Atlanta suburb as
police investigated a bomb threat at
one school and threats of gun vio
lence at two others.
Decatur police said Tuesday
that a system-wide lockdown was
imposed “out of precaution” across
the City Schools of Decatur, affect
ing about 5,600 students in nine
schools. Private schools followed
suit in the city just east of Atlanta.
Some elementary students were
moved from their classrooms to
other buildings under police escort.
Police said hours later that they
found no evidence to substantiate
the threats.
Police said officers remained at
every school throughout Tuesday,
and students weren’t allowed to
leave until the lockdown was lifted.
School officials informed parents
that all after-school activities Tues
day were canceled.
