Reed off to fast
start at Hero
World Challenge
Patrick Reed and Tiger
Woods are about as far
apart as can be on the lead-
erboard after one round of
the Hero World Challenge.
Only they know how
close they are after the
Ryder Cup fallout.
Reed showed no sign of
fatigue in his travels from
Dubai to Hong Kong to the
Bahamas in successive
weeks, making birdie on
three of his last five holes
Thursday for a 7-under 65
and a share of the lead with
late-entry Patrick Cantlay.
Woods was never under
par at any point and opened
with a 73, eight shots
behind, tied for 16th in an
18-man field.
Reed’s comments after
Europe won the Ryder Cup
still follow him. In a phone
interview with The New
York Times hours after the
loss, Reed blamed Jordan
Spieth for them not playing
together, U.S. captain Jim
Furyk for twice leaving him
on the bench and he made
it sound as though he was

Gainesville’s House, who
serves as the American
Canoe Association’s direc
tor of high performance
and competition, and was
also on hand in Colorado to
represent the US Olympic
Committee to pick the most
qualified athlete for the
paddle sports.
According to Hatchette,
the evaluation was intense
in Colorado. She ran
sprints. Completed timed
races on an indoor-rowing
machine. Did lots of agility
work. Hatchette even tested
her merit in the ring with
boxing.
When it was all said and
done, Hatchette had proved
she was an elite athlete.
Before going to Colorado,
Hatchette worked to fine-
tune her conditioning for six
weeks with the high school
track coach of her mother,
Cherita, in Oklahoma.
On the final day, House
took to the stage and
announced Hatchette as
his selection for the sprint
kayak spot to train with
Team USA, which was all
part of the final episode
of the show that aired last
Sunday.
Once her name was
called, Hatchette took to
the stage and was gifted a
Team USA jacket.
“She was a really good
competitor, but it was her
mental attitude that tipped
my decision in her favor,”
stuck with Woods as a part
ner in Paris.
“We spoke after the
Ryder Cup for a long period
of time,” Woods said. “We
talked among us and it will
stay between us.”
This is one time Reed
held his tongue.
After his eighth and final
birdie in balmy weather
at Albany Golf Club, he
acknowledged nothing
more than they had talked.
“Whatever I talk about
with other players and
other guys stays between
the guys,” Reed said.
He also said he hasn’t
spoken to Furyk, and Reed
told the New York Post on
Tuesday that he hasn’t spo
ken to Spieth, but that Spi
eth has his number.
“It’s been I don’t know
how many weeks (since
the Ryder Cup), but in the
golf world, it’s been a long
time,” Reed said. “All of
us on our side have moved
past that. Basically, when
the tournament was over,
all of us moved past it and
we’re just kind of getting
ready for hopefully two
years.”
But there’s a Presidents
Cup in between, next
December in Australia, and
while the intensity is not the
said House. “I could tell she
wanted it.”
Once filming and training
was complete, Hatchette
had to keep from telling
anyone that she was picked,
due to television disclosure
rules.
When the show aired, she
was able to share in her suc
cess with everyone.
“It (was) a big secret
for a couple months now,”
Hatchette said. “It’s a relief
to have that over.”
Once House made his
decision, it set the wheels in
motion for the reality show
winner to move to Gaines
ville. First, they talked and
hammered out the details
same, the team concept is
intact. And it could get even
more awkward considering
Woods is the captain.
“I don’t think anything
needs to be resolved,” Reed
said.
Reed is used to going
about life is own way, and
he’s not about to made any
apologies. He just wants to
play good golf, and there
was plenty of that on a day
that allowed for low scor
ing. All but three players
were at par or better.
Woods was not one of
them. His return to tourna
ment competition didn’t
start nearly as well as his
last one ended.
The World Challenge is
his first 72-hole event since
he won the Tour Champion
ship at East Lake on Sept.
23, the end of a remarkable
comeback season from a
fourth back surgery that
signaled Woods was capa
ble of winning again.
Woods has been battling
a fever. He says his ankles
were sore from wear and
tear, an issue he says has
been around for a few
months. On the golf course,
he didn’t hit it close enough
or make enough putts,
leading to only his third
round over par in his last
of their coach-athlete
partnership.
Hatchette decided on her
own that she wanted to relo
cate to Gainesville, where
she trains on the water
twice daily and works a
part-time job to offset living
expenses with a host family.
Teaching Hatchette how
to paddle started with the
basics of learning how to
balance in a boat, which is
extremely unstable for a
novice, she said.
House started his pupil in
a boat with a wider base to
get used to the strokes and
body positioning.
Once she got the hang of
that, she moved into a boat

Woods made consecu
tive birdies to get back to
even par, and then it came
undone on the par-3 12th
when his tee shot went left,
just inside a hazard line but
still in play. But the chip
came out short, rolled down
the bank and past his feet
into the water. He took a
penalty drop, got it on the
green and missed the putt
to take triple bogey.

Philip Rivers awed Tom
Brady with a record-setting
display of precision and
accuracy.
Rivers earned high praise
from the only quarterback
to win five Super
Bowl titles after he
tied the NFL mark
for consecutive
completions and
broke records for
the most to start a
game and the high
est completion per
centage during the
Los Angeles Char
gers’ 45-10 rout over
Arizona on Sunday.
The almost 37-year-old
Rivers connected on his first
25 passes to surpass Mark
Brunell’s mark of 22 in 2006,
and finished 28 of 29. His
96.6 percent accuracy sur
passed Kurt Warner’s 92.3
percent set in 2009. Marcus
Mariota also topped Warner
by going 22 of 23 in Tennes
see’s loss to Houston on Mon
day night for a 95.7 percent
clip.
Rivers tied Ryan Tanne-
hill, who needed two games
to complete 25 straight
passes for Miami in 2015.
“Philip made incredible
throws. I watched the game.
Obviously, when someone
has a record-break
ing performance,
I want to go figure
out what the heck
they’re doing,”
Brady said Monday
in his weekly inter
view on Westwood
One. “And the real
ity is there is a high
level of difficulty
on a lot of those
throws. He made great
throws where the receivers
could get their hands on the
ball and make the catch.
The receivers made some
good catches. Really, the
incompletion came where
he got a little hit as he was
getting ready to pass. That
probably would have been
a completion. That’s just
remarkable.”
Brady made history, too.
He moved ahead of Pey
ton Manning for most yards
passing, including postsea
son, in league history. Brady
has 79,416.
Here’s a look inside some
more interesting numbers
heading into Week 13:
BROWNIE POINTS: Nick
Chubb is the first Browns
running back to have at least
one touchdown rushing and
receiving in two straight
games since 1950.
SPREADING IT
AROUND: Drew Brees has
thrown a touchdown pass to
13 different Saints players,
tied for the most in a season
since 1970. Matt Ryan is the
other quarterback
to accomplish the
feat during his MVP
season two years
ago.
SACK, SACK,
SACK: Baltimore’s
Matt Judon sacked
Derek Carr on three
straight offensive
plays, becoming the
second player to do
that since sacks became an
official stat in 1982.
DE JA VU: Jake Elliott
kicked a decisive field goal
in the final minute of regula
tion to give the Eagles a vic
tory over the Giants for the
second straight season. He
booted one from 61 yards
out in Week 3 last year and
this time nailed a 43-yarder.
LONG DISTANCE: Jets
kicker Jason Myers has
five field goals of at least 55
yards this season, most ever
in a single season.
NOT JUST A KICKER:
Pittsburgh’s Chris Boswell
became the first player to
throw a touchdown pass
and kick a field goal in the
same game since
David Akers in
2012. Offensive
lineman Alejandro
Villanueva was on
the receiving end of
Boswell’s pass.
OPPOSITE
EFFECT: Amari
Cooper has three
TDs receiving in
four games with
the Cowboys after he was
acquired from Oakland.
Golden Tate has just 11
catches for 97 yards and no
scores in three games for
Philadelphia following a
trade with Detroit.
JULIO’S 100: Julio Jones
has 100 yards receiving
six straight games, longest
streak in Falcons history.
RUNNING RAVENS:
The Ravens have rushed for
more than 200 yards in con
secutive games for the first
time since 2012. They are
24-2-1 when doing so.
SELECT COMPANY:
Tampa’s Mike Evans has
joined Hall of Famer Randy
Moss (six) and A.J. Green
(five) as the only players
with 1,000 yards receiving
in each of their first five
seasons.
