Hertz, Clear to begin biometric scans

Biometric screening is
expanding to the rental car
industry.
Hertz said Tuesday it is
teaming up with Clear, the
maker of biometric screen
ing kiosks found at many
airports, in an effort to slash
the time it takes to pick up
a rental car. Clear hopes it
will lead more travelers to its
platform, which has 3 million
members in the U.S.
It’s the latest place con
sumers will find biomet
ric technology, which has
migrated over the last 50
years from government facil
ities and banks to airports,
stadiums and even smart
phones that unlock with the
touch a fingerprint. Hertz is
the first rental car company
to use the technology.
Improvements in cameras
and other technology have
made it cheaper to install
scanners that can read fin
gerprints, faces, and irises.
More than 100 airports
worldwide use biometric
readers from Clear, Vision-
Box and other companies to
scan passengers. Walt Disney
World verifies visitors’ iden
tity by scanning fingerprints.
And the advancements
will keep coming. Microsoft
is working with Australia’s
national bank on cardless
ATM machines that would
let people withdraw cash
using a facial scan and per
sonal identification number.
Universities in London and
Copenhagen have on-campus
groceries that let students
pay with their finger. Some
laptops can now be unlocked
with a fingerprint scan.
Hertz with Clear launched
their biometrics scans this
week at Hartsfield-Jackson
Atlanta International Air
port. It will be rolled out to
40 more U.S. Hertz locations
next year, including John
F. Kennedy Airport in New
York, San Francisco Interna
tional Airport and Los Ange
les International Airport.
Hertz Gold Plus Rewards
loyalty program members
with Clear will be able to
bypass the counter, pick up
their car and head to the
exit gate. There, Clear pods
equipped with cameras and
touchscreens can read their
face or their fingerprints. If
they match up with Hertz’s
data, the gate will open.
Hertz President and CEO
Kathy Marinello expects
Clear to shave 1.5 minutes
off what’s now a two-minute
checkout process.
“In the world of travel, I
think time is of the essence,”
she said.
The service is free for
members of the Gold Plus
Rewards program, which
also has no fee. Travelers
can sign up for Clear at a
Hertz location. To upgrade to
airport service, which prom
ises to move Clear members
through security lines more
quickly, travelers must pay a
monthly fee of $15.
Clear says it’s the first
time it will be identifying
members based on their
face instead of their iris or
their fingerprints. Clear
CEO Caryn Seidman-Becker
says the cameras can take
measurements and iden
tify differences in facial
features.

Online retailers are getting
physical.
A growing number of brands
born on the internet are now
opening brick-and-mortar
stores and moving into the sub
urban malls once considered
doomed as more Americans
shopped online.
But they’re taking it even
further by doubling-down on
the tactile experience. Online
mattress retailer Casper, for
instance, is opening stores
that allow customers to book
naps and test out mattresses
before buying. Indochino —
the online tailor — decided
to borrow from the old Savile
Row model where customers
can be measured face-to-face
for custom suits.
“Online brands have
embraced clicks-to-bricks,”
said Faith Hope Consolo,
chairman of Prudential Doug
las Elliman’s retail division.
“Shoppers love to touch, inter
act and try on in person and
malls are upping the ante by
offering immersive experi
ences that are exciting and
memorable.”
The store openings mark
a major shift for formerly
online-only brands that just a
few years ago believed they
didn’t need a physical pres
ence to generate robust sales
growth.
Digital natives are now
finding that the cost of acquir
ing new customers online is
soaring as competition for
eyeballs has increased the
cost of online ads on Google
and other platforms. At the
same time, opening a store
has become more afford
able as higher mall vacancies
have prompted landlords to
offer flexible leases and other
perks. It can be 10 times more
expensive to acquire a new
customer online as it is with a
physical store, said Jim Ward,
who heads up recruiting for
online brands for mall owner
CBL.
There are now roughly 600
stores across the country from
these online natives, accord
ing to Green Street Advisors,
a real estate research firm.
Bonobos, which now has 60
stores and sells men’s cloth
ing, plans to have 100 by
2020. Online eyewear retailer
Warby Parker, which opened
its first store in 2013, will have
nearly 100 stores by year-end.
Others are following suit.
Casper plans to have about
200 stores in the next two to
three years, up from the cur
rent 20. And Fabletics, an
active sportswear brand co
founded by celebrity Kate
Hudson, aims to quadruple the
number to 100.
For a brand that’s less
than 10 years old, new store
openings mean a 45 percent
increase on average in online
traffic, says a recent survey
by International Council of
Shopping Centers.
But not every mall is bene
fiting from the shift by online
retailers. Digital brands are
clustering in top-tier shopping
centers, driving an increas
ingly large gap between the
poshest of malls and those
struggling to fill vacancies.
While many online brands are
planting stores in destinations
around New York and Los
Angeles, they’re also launch
ing stores in Oklahoma City
and Birmingham, Alabama.
“We’re not considering any
thing outside of the premiere
malls,” Dave Gilboa, co
founder and co-CEO of Warby
Parker.
The physical stores often
provide a level of conve
nience that the web lacks.
At the upscale Mall at Short
Hills in New Jersey, pre
dental college student Calev
Glick, 20, stopped by Indo
chino on a recent Friday to get
measured for a suit for syna
gogue. He considers himself
an “Amazon guy” because he
doesn’t have much time to go
out shopping.
“At a traditional depart
ment store, you kind of hope
it fits,” Glick said. “Here, I am
getting all the help I need. I
am going to be here two hours
and I’m going to get it shipped
to my house.”
Digital natives still account
for a tiny fraction of overall
mall tenants, yet they could
soon have a “material” effect
on mall revenues, says Bill
Taubman, chief operating
officer of mall operator and
owner Taubman Centers.
Ron Harries, head of retail
for Fabletics, said that open
ing physical stores wasn’t in
the company’s original plan
in late 2014, but it realized
that a physical location could
acquire customers more
efficiently.
“This gives you an opportu
nity to reach customers who
are not shopping online,”
Harries said.
Moonves’ exit pay
to be determined
by new CBS board

NEW YORK — The newly elected CBS board
faces daunting tasks: deciding whether former
CEO Les Moonves gets a $120 million exit pack
age following a sexual-misconduct investigation
and charting a path for CBS to
recover.
CBS shareholders ratified
the 11 board members, includ
ing six new ones, at an annual
meeting Tuesday. The board
now has until the end of Janu
ary to decide whether CBS
fired Moonves with or without
cause, a determination that will
affect his eligibility for sever
ance. An investigation by two
outside law firms could conclude this month.
Meanwhile, a search for a new CEO is ongoing.
Strauss Zelnick, filling Moonves’ role as board
chairman on an interim basis, said that a recruit
ing firm has been hired to conduct the search
and that a decision will be made in due course.
CBS hasn’t announced a timetable.
Moonves was ousted in September after The
New Yorker published allegations from 12
women who said he subjected them to mistreat
ment that included forced oral sex, groping and
retaliation if they resisted.
The New York Times said a report on the out
side investigation found Moonves committed
“multiple acts of serious nonconsensual sexual
misconduct. ” Citing the report, the Times said he
deleted numerous text messages and was “eva
sive and untruthful at times.” The investigators
said their work was still in progress, and a lawyer
for Moonves denied any wrongdoing.
Tuesday’s meeting wrapped up in less than 30
minutes without discussion of Moonves.
Because the investigation is ongoing, there was
really no point in the board or company execu
tives bringing up the allegations, said Porter
Bibb, a former media executive now with the
advisory firm Mediatech Capital Partners. He
said any mention of Moonves would have put
pressure on the board to remark on the sever
ance before the investigation results were in.
Though no shareholder raised the issue at the
meeting, about a dozen protesters gathered out
side as shareholders arrived. The protesters held
such signs as “CBS don’t reward sexual abuse”
and “$120M?! Les doesn’t deserve more.”
“The board of directors has all the information
they need to fire him with cause and to deny him
the $120 million golden parachute,” said Natalie
Green of the Ultraviolet, an online organization
dedicated to fighting sexism in the public and pri
vate sectors.
