Chestatee’s Cameron Gwyn lays the ball up while Cherokee Bluff’s Jason
Evrett, right, and Corey Thomas attempt to block during Thursday’s game
in Gainesville.
BLUFF
■ Continued from 1B
season. With a chance to go up
against his past teammates on the
line, Neville played some of his
best basketball.
He led the way for the Bears
(7-4), scoring 22 points on the night,
including 10 of 13 in a 13-1 Chero
kee Bluff run to start the third
quarter. Corey Thomas added 13
for the Bears, including a couple of
key put-back baskets early in the
game. Cameron Gwyn scored 16,
sinking four 3-pointers for Ches-
tatee (10-4) in the loss.
After the game, Neville said
preparation was the key to Chero
kee Bluff’s dominant effort.
“We did what we’ve been prac
ticing to do,” he said. “Coach Wood
has prepared us. He’s been prepar
ing us for this.”
The Bears were clearly more
ready than their opponents to start
the game.
Thomas got the scoring started
on a put-back make about 30 sec
onds in. Steals from Bosko Norman
and Jaylon Justice on the following
two Chestatee possessions led to
two more quick baskets.
Cherokee Bluff dominated
defensively and on the offensive
glass, scoring the first 12 points of
the game before a Brenton Nich
olson 3-pointer nearly halfway
through the opening frame got
Chestatee on the board.
“I was really proud of the kids,”
Wood said. “They came out and
started strong.”
The Bears pushed their first-
half lead all the way to 17 points
early in the second quarter before
Chestatee started to respond. After
Neville was assessed a technical
for kicking the ball after a play,
the War Eagles stole some of the
momentum back, finishing the half
on a 12-4 run that cut the deficit to
seven points at halftime.
But Neville came out of the
break hot, stealing the opening
inbound of the third quarter to
score five seconds into the half and
not slowing down throughout the
frame, scoring eight of the next 11
Cherokee Bluff points.
“We just knew we had to play
defense, and my teammates were
looking for me,” Neville said.
“They were looking to get me the
ball.”
The Bears held Chestatee to
three made shots from the field
in the third quarter, and kept the
defensive pressure up in the fourth
as well.
A 13-0 Cherokee Bluff run in the
middle of the final frame — led by
seven points from Norman — was
too much for the War Eagles to
overcome.
“We try to pride ourselves on
playing defense,” Wood said of
his team’s lockdown performance
in the second half. “We’re getting
there. We’re a young school, first-
year school, but I’m really proud of
our kids. We really did a good job
tonight.”
CHEROKEE BLUFF GIRLS 78,
JOHNSON 32: Freshman Timber
Gaither poured in 19 points with
six steals for Cherokee Bluff, and
center Madi Phillips scored 13 as
the Lady Bears (6-5) coasted.
“I think it was good for us,”
Cherokee Bluff coach Lindsay Jus
tice said. “It was a good game to get
everybody in and get everybody
some minutes.”
The Lady Bears were dominant
from the beginning of the game,
scoring the first 13 points of the
opening quarter while forcing sev
eral turnovers. A 12-3 run to end
the period gave Cherokee Bluff an
18-point advantage after just eight
minutes of play.
The team didn’t slow down
before the half. Gaither put in
nine of her 19 points in the second
quarter, including a pair of steals
and breakaway layups on back-to-
back Johnson possessions. Then,
the Lady Bears outscored their
opponents 25-5 in the third frame
as they ran away with the blowout
win.
With the victory, Cherokee Bluff
earns a matchup against top seed
Flowery Branch in next week’s
Lanierland tournament.
“It’s very exciting,” Justice
said. “The history of Lanierland
is so rich. It’s a good environment.
There’s nothing quite like the envi
ronment of Lanierland. We’re
really excited to earn the right to
play in it.”
