The correct play in three no trump is to go after the diamond suit. A double finesse is called for, meaning declarer first leads a low diamond from dummy to his 10. Win or lose, declarer then crosses back to dummy and leads a diamond to his queen. This is a high-percentage play and, on this deal, would produce 10 tricks. Something happened, however, on the way to this easy overtrick. South won the opening heart lead in dummy and led a low diamond. Instead of playing low, East played his king of diamonds. There was no technical reason for making this play on this deal, although there might have been had partner led a low heart, indicating strength in the heart suit. If so, East might have wanted to grab the lead to return partner’s suit before partner’s possible ace of hearts was knocked out. The play of the king had the psychological effect of making South think that East started with shortness in diamonds. There would be no point, in that case, of returning to dummy for another diamond play. South just won with his ace, cashed the queen of diamonds, and led another diamond. East grabbed this with his jack and returned a low club, allowing the defense to take four club tricks and defeat the contract. Granovetter says that he has seen this ploy work many times, though it is hard to explain why. Carolyn: A close friend is in a wedding next weekend. She just found out the bride’s mom died and is to be buried on Monday. They are going through with the wedding. I think that is incredibly tacky. Five years ago, my brother got engaged to a great girl. Her family planned an elaborate engagement party at some real expense. My mom died, unexpectedly, six days before the party. It was horrible. The bride’s mother canceled the party and sent a letter that my dad held while he cried. It said that in light of the tragic death of the groom-to-be’s mother, this spe cial but ultimately trivial party will not be held. My dad and I still can’t believe how thoughtful his daughter-in-law’s par ents were. Am I just weird about this, or do you agree a funeral should — um — stop a wedding? — Vermont I believe both hosts acted appropriately. In the past case, the loss wasn’t suffered by the host, but instead by a guest of honor — so the host was, I agree, most gracious to cancel the event out of respect. In the present case, the loss was suffered by the host (and guest of honor) herself, and so it was up to her and her family entirely to decide how best to honor the mom’s memory.
