2C Sunday, December 30, 2018 The Times, Gainesville, Georgia | gainesvilletimes.com LOCATSOUTHEAST Major MARTA vote for Gwinnett expected in March Associated Press A historic vote in early 2019 could bring more mass transit to metro Atlanta’s booming northeast suburbs. Gwinnett County residents are set to vote March 19 on whether to join the Metro politan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, commonly known as MARTA. If voters give their approval, they’d pay a new 1 percent sales tax until 2057, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Under the contract with MARTA, the extra penny on purchases in Gwinnett would be collected by the state. The money would then flow back to the county, which would write checks to the transit agency. Among plans being consid ered, should the vote pass: Gwinnett County’s first-ever MARTA rail station near Inter state 85 and Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Trains from the station would connect with the Doraville MARTA station. Public outreach to educate voters on what’s involved is expected to ramp up as the vote draws closer. Since they are government T think that the biggest issue is helping people understand what this vote is about. ...There’s a lot more local control in this.’ Paige Havens ‘Go Gwinnett’ spokeswoman entities, Gwinnett County and MARTA can’t use tax dollars to advocate for or against a refer endum question - so, officially, they’re left with “education” efforts at their disposal, the newspaper reported. The information will undoubtedly focus on explain ing both the county’s transit plan and its pending contract with MARTA. The latter may be especially crucial for long time residents of the county that have been wary to trust outside groups with Gwinnett County tax dollars. If the referendum is approved, most of the Gwin nett County transit tax dollars collected will be put away for future projects, includ ing extending a rail line to the county. But about a third of the early collections would go to ramp up bus operations and for general maintenance and operation of the transit system. A pro-MARTA committee called “Go Gwinnett” regis tered with the state earlier this month. Its spokeswoman, Paige Havens, said it is comprised of various community leaders who felt the need to step up. The group is still formulat ing its plans, but expects to get revved up in early January. It will hold regular public meet ings and town halls, canvass at various places throughout the county and create a website, among other efforts, Havens said. “I think that the biggest issue is helping people understand what this vote is about, and it’s not what previous refer- endums were about,” Havens said. “There’s a lot more local control in this.” ATLANTA Senate committee mulls authority to oversee airport A Georgia Senate committee has rec ommended that state lawmakers con sider creating an authority to oversee Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport. WABE-FM reports the committee did not propose any legislation, but adopted a recommendation to establish a new authority “to oversee and hold accountable the business enterprise and operations” of the airport. State Sen. Burt Jones, who chaired the committee, said that the current management structure, with power consolidated with the City of Atlanta, isn’t working. Jones pointed to past corruption scandals, including one involving alleged impropriety in the awarding of airport contracts. But city officials have pushed back, saying the airport has been successfully managed as one of the world’s busiest airports under Atlanta’s leadership. Delta Air Lines, headquartered in Atlanta, has also opposed a state takeover. MACON Georgia Bureau of Investigation makes arrest in threat case A former student at Mercer Univer sity has been arrested for threatening a professor at his alma mater. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says 28-year-old Anshu Patre, of Grif fin, was arrested Thursday on charges of stalking, terroristic threats and acts and harassing communications. The Mercer University Police Department asked the GBI to assist in the investigation, which revealed that Patre graduated from Mercer about six years ago and had recently began sending threatening emails to one of his former professors. The nature of the alleged threats was not disclosed. It was not known if Patre is repre sented by an attorney who could speak on his behalf. NORTH CAROLINA Officials: Rabid bear found FAIRFIELD — North Carolina offi cials say a dead black bear has tested positive for rabies, the first such case known to the state. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said in a state ment Friday that a Fairfield man con tacted the commission on Dec. 17 after finding the male bear dead at his game feeder in Hyde County. Colleen Olfenbuttel, a black bear and furbearer biologist for the com mission, says only four cases of rabies in wild black bears have been docu mented in the continental U.S. since 1999. The commission performed a nec ropsy on the bear before sending it to researchers at the University of Geor gia for further testing. The research ers informed the commission on Dec. 21 that rabies caused the bear’s death. Associated Press KITCHEN INSPECTIONS The following are among the food service establishments inspected from Dec. 26-28 by the Hall County Environmental Health Department. Food service establishments are given a letter grade that coincides with a percentile: “A” (90-100), “B” (80-89), “C” (70-79), “U” 69 and below. Inspections (frequency) of a food service establishment are conducted based on risk categorization. The risk type is determined by the menu items served, the food preparation processed performed, and the previous food safety history in the food service establishment. A new food service establishment that has never served food must score 100 (A) to receive a food service permit to operate. When a restaurant changes ownership, a new food service permit must be issued. To be issued a permit for a change of ownership, the establishment must score a 95 (A) or above with all foodborne illness risk factors and public health interventions in compliance. Permits must be posted in public view at all times. Establishments with drive-thru windows will also be required to have the top one- third of a copy of the most current inspection report visible through each window allowing customers to easily read the score, date of inspection and establishment information, in addition to the copy posted inside the establishment. Copies of the rules are available at the Hall County Environmental health Office. The rules and regulations are also available online atdph.georgia.gov/environmental- health-inspections. To register a complaint against a food service establishment, contact the Hall County Environmental Health Department at 770-531 - 3973.
