unemployed because of job elimi

thank goodness. But feeling anx
ious and depressed, sort of staring
into the void. Any advice or words

unwelcome disruption, or at least
the threat of it. I hope
it’s of some comfort to
know that what you’re
feeling is completely
normal. Change is hard,
and losing income
is scary, even when
you’re prepared for it.
It sounds as if you
can use this period of
uncertainty to work on
your Plan B — and in

the process basically
treat your anxiety. Fig
ure out, for example,
some exact numbers —
how much money could
you live on indefinitely?
Then, what jobs would
bring in that amount?
Which of them sound
interesting, and which
are you qualified for?
If you don’t feel
ready for this, then break it into
smaller pieces, and smaller goals
— like, would a part-time job help
steady you? Dedicate, say, 30 min
utes per day to this research.
At the same time, start thinking
of things that calm you, that you can
turn to if you suddenly find yourself
with open days to fill. The biggest
payoff awaits, I suspect, in things
that occupy you, tap into your cre
ativity, promote physical health,
and save you money all at once.
Cooking is an obvious example, or
walking/hiking, but there are oth
ers. Easing some of these hobbies
into your schedule now, along with

South's leap to game was
aggressive. Others might have settled
for just making a game try, but North
might well have accepted a try in
spades, clubs, or diamonds. North
has useful help in all three suits.
The club’s Saturday night duplicate
had just started when Hard Luck
Louie became declarer on this deal.
West cashed two high diamonds as
East high-lowed to show a doubleton.
West continued with a third round
of diamonds. Louie tried ruffing
with dummy’s eight of hearts, but
East over-ruffed with the nine and
continued with a low heart. Louie
won, drew the last trump, and took
the club finesse for down one. “My
usual luck," said Louie. "West had a
sixth diamond and the queen of clubs
was off-side."
Lucky Larry declared the same
contract with the same start to
the defense. Instead of ruffing in
dummy at trick three, however, Larry
discarded a low club from dummy
and allowed West's queen to hold
the trick without a fight. He won
the 10 of spades shift with his ace
and cashed the ace of hearts, just to
be sure the hearts weren't splitting
4-0. When both opponents followed,
he drew the rest of the trumps and
then led a low club to dummy’s
king, a club back to his ace, and
ruffed a dub. All went well and he
claimed his contract. Simply played,
but nicely played!
