Father of child found wandering Walmart charged

The father of the missing
child found Sunday, Jan. 26, at
the Walmart store in Gaines
ville has been charged with
reckless conduct, accord
ing to the Gainesville Police
Department.
Alejandro Cruz-Cervantes,
36, of Gainesville, is being held
at the Hall County jail. He was
arrested with the help of the
Hall County Sheriffs Office.
The investigation is ongoing,
and “additional charges are
possible,” states a Gainesville
Police press release issued
Monday, Jan. 27.
Cruz-Cervantes is accused of
leaving the child at Walmart
“unattended without guard
ianship and with no attempt to
retrieve the child,” states the
release.
The child is 5 years old. Ear
lier, police believed the child
was 3.
Police were called to the
store at 400 Shallowford Road
about 1:30 p.m. Sunday after
the store reported the child
wandering alone.
“With the help of the pub
lic, investigators were able to
identify the child and subse
quently identify and locate the
father,” according to the press
release.

the Georgia Department of Transpor
tation has rebuilt, and will affect many
streets. The new bridge opened to traffic
Tuesday, Jan. 28, and the old bridge will
soon be demolished.
New water mains have been installed,
and the existing lines will be aban
doned, Altherr said. The existing lines
are attached to the old bridge and
must be abandoned to allow for bridge
demolition.
Drivers are encouraged to be careful
and watch for construction workers and
equipment in the area on Wednesday.

Ga. officials make case for stronger anti-gang law
ATLANTA — Gov. Brian Kemp’s adminis
tration is seeking to persuade lawmakers of the
need to tighten Georgia’s gang laws.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vic
Reynolds, Attorney General Chris Carr and oth
ers told a House-Senate panel that gangs are a
serious problem needing further action.
GBI wants to strengthen a state law it already
touts as the nation’s strongest. Perhaps most
controversially, GBI wants the power to begin
investigating gang crimes without an invitation
from local officials, as is needed now. Reynolds
told The Associated Press that he anticipates
“open discussions” with sheriffs and others who
might be hesitant over that authority.
Reynolds said he also wants changes that
would clarify that each separate act listed in the
state’s 2010 anti-gang law could be prosecuted
as a separate offense, allowing prosecutors to
load up charges with hefty potential prison sen
tences for gang members.
That law makes it a crime punishable by up
to 15 years in prison for a series of offenses if
someone is a member of a “criminal street
gang,” even if just painting graffiti.
Kemp and his officials have called for a gang
database that investigators could use to share
information. They’ve also proposed a public
gang registry that would function like the cur
rent public sex offender registry, publicizing
the names and residences of convicted offend
ers. Officials want to enshrine Georgia’s current
gang task force in law, and allow prosecutors to
consolidate criminal cases across county lines,
instead of prosecuting individual offenses sepa
rately in individual counties.
“We’re so uniquely positioned in the bureau,
in GBI, to reach across those jurisdictional
boundaries,” Reynolds said.

Final asphalt paving underway on Lanier Islands Parkway
Single-lane closures are taking place on
Lanier Islands Parkway/Ga. 347 through Mon
day, Feb. 3, according to the Georgia Depart
ment of Transportation.
Crews are doing final asphalt paving along the
road 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.
The project is about a month from completion,
district spokeswoman Katie Strickland said.
The $10.4 million project initially was set
for completion Oct. 31, but the contractor was
granted an extension because of a delay in the
approval of an Army Corps of Engineers permit.
A center turn lane is being added along a 2.4-
mile stretch, along with a 10-foot multi-use path
on one side of the road and a 5-foot sidewalk on
the other. The project runs between McEver
Road and Lanier Islands.

the University of
Georgia. Following
his graduation in
1951, they returned
to Gainesville to
make their home.
She was a member
of First Presbyterian

is survived by her
husband of 70 years,
