Community Alzheimer’s,
dementia forum planned
BY MEGAN REED
mreed@gainesvilletimes.com
A community forum on Feb. 11 will pro
vide information about Alzheimer’s dis
ease and other dementias.
Community members will be able to
ask questions about the disease, share
their personal experiences, and learn
about available resources and volunteer
opportunities. The Alzheimer’s Associa
tion Georgia Chapter will host the 9 a.m.
event at Lanier College and Career Acad
emy. It will be the chapter’s first forum in
Hall County.
Amy Johnston, a spokeswoman for
the Georgia chapter, said the asso
ciation wants to expand its reach as
Alzheimer’s and dementia become more
common.
“We’re doing this throughout the state,
but we’re choosing communities we feel
need additional support, whether it’s
through the Alzheimer’s Association or
things that we refer out,” she said. “We
also want to hear from the community
as far as needs that they are looking
for.”

Johnston said people who are 65
or older are at an increased risk for
Alzheimer’s. About 10,000 Americans
turn 65 each day, she said, and Alzheim
er’s cases are expected to increase by
about 30% over the next five years in
Georgia.
The Georgia chapter knows of 150,000
people in the state with Alzheimer’s,
and 5.8 million people have the disease
nationwide.
In Hall County, a caregiver support
group meets at New Horizons Lanier
Park, with the next meeting set for 6 p.m.
on Thursday, Feb. 13. The association
also has a 24/7 hotline at 1-800-272-3900 to
offer support.
Johnston said the community forum will
be used to determine needs for additional
resources in Hall.
