That decision should have been his partner's to make. East's three-heart contract would almost certainly have been defeated. All would be well, however, if South could take nine tricks. He caught an excellent dummy and that gave him a good chance. South won the opening heart lead with dummy’s ace and led a spade to East’s 10 and his king. Was the 10 a false card from ace-10-9, or a true card from ace-10 doubleton? South led a club, hoping for an entry to dummy to lead another spade. West rose with his ace and led a diamond to East's ace. East cashed the king of hearts and then led the queen of hearts, ruffed by South with the queen. South led a club to dummy’s king and a spade toward his hand. East won with his ace, perforce, and led the jack of hearts. This promoted West's nine of spades to the setting trick. What went wrong? South’s read on East’s spade holding turned out to be crucial. The given play would have been fine had East started with ace-10-9, but South needed to play East for his actual holding of ace-10 doubleton.
