Dear Carolyn:
My husband is leaving me
because he’s in love with someone
else. I’m 29 weeks pregnant, we
have a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old,
and we just moved to a different
state a few months ago. Now I’m
in a new state without friends or
family, pregnant and abandoned
by my husband, trying to explain
to my children why daddy won’t
come home anymore.
I’m just shattered. I have no
one to turn to right now, and my
friends and family are all in a
completely different state. I want
to move back but how would that
even work? I’m not even sure my
old job would re-hire me since I
trained my replacement, and I’m
pregnant, I don’t even know how
I’d begin a job search.
Please tell me it gets better,
because I’m reeling and I don’t
know what to do.

Opening lead: Ace of A
East-West were about to suffer
a serious penalty in five diamonds
doubled, but South soldiered on to
five hearts. This had the potential
to be a complete disaster, but South
could salvage it if he could find a
way to take 11 tricks. He was up to
the task.
West, who knew that his partner
was short in spades, started with the
ace of spades and another spade.
South ruffed with the 10 of hearts
in dummy. After surviving this
start. South led a heart to his ace,
cashed the king, and led a diamond
to dummy's ace.
The hand was pretty much an
open book, as West was known to
have started with six spades and
three hearts. West almost had to
have started with 2-2 in the minors,
or East's bidding wouldn't make
much sense. South ruffed a diamond
back to his hand and cashed the
ace and king of clubs. Declarer had
eliminated both minor suits from
the West hand, leaving West with
four spades and a high trump. South
exited with a trump to West and West
had to lead a spade into South. This
gave South the rest of the tricks to
make his contract. Nicely played!
