After his time as principal, Colston moved to the Hall County Schools’ central office where he worked part-time as a data analyst and testing coordinator. Will Schofield, Hall super intendent, described Colston as a gifted educator and dear friend. “I learned a great deal from him, and whether times were good or bad, he was always there,” Schofield said. “His wife (Nancy), our community and I will miss him deeply.” Rebecca Fisher, Mount Vernon’s assistant principal, said when she worked under Colston, he would always tell the teachers and staff, “There is never a bad day at Mount Vernon.” Lisa Mattel, media clerk at the elementary school, said Colston’s efforts have helped Mount Vernon stand apart as one of the best elementary schools in Hall. The school received the Georgia School of Excellence Award under his leadership. “He had high expectations of those working for him and pushed us to do our very best for the boys and girls of Hall County,” Mattel said. Barrett said Colston was a man who “had a heart for kids.” “He loved the kids here,” Barrett said. “He was very dependable, and he liked the school to be neat and orderly.” Jennifer Westbrook, current principal at Mount Vernon, said she’ll never forget how he wel comed her warmly on her first day at the elementary school. “Wayne Colston loves Mount Vernon and this community,” she said. “He has a wonderful relationship with teachers, stu dents and parents, and he will be very missed by everyone. His positive impact will always be felt in our community.” A celebration of Colston’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Sat urday, Feb. 22, at Gainesville First United Methodist Church. A visitation and reception will follow at the church. Obituaries Robert Wayne Colston Died February 20, 2020 An educator who impacted thousands of lives in multiple schools and programs died on Thursday, February 20, following a courageous two year health battle. Robert Wayne Colston, age 66, completed his BSN in Science, his Masters of Art and his Educational Specialist degree from the University of Georgia and was a true bulldog fan his entire life. Wayne began his professional career as a teacher, coach and assistant principal at South Hall Junior High prior to being named principal at Chestnut Mountain Elementary where he served for five years. In 1993 he was named principal at Mt Vernon Elementary School where he oversaw the design and construction of the school and became its first principal. Under his leadership the school received the Georgia School of Excellence Award. Also, he served as the Ninth District Representative for the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals (GAESP). When he retired the student body and faculty presented him with his beloved Vernon who walked with him daily until his illness and lay by his side during his passing. Prior to his illness he served part time as Data Analyst/Testing Coordinator for the Hall County School System. As a hobby he obtained his real estate and appraisal licenses and enjoyed land development over his lifetime. In addition to being an avid UGA fan, he loved playing golf with his foursome buddies. He was particularly proud when his team won at The Medical Center Golf Tournament on more than one occasion. He loved all things related to nature and the outdoors. He also enjoyed hunting. Wayne was the son of the late Chester Robert Colston and was also preceded in death by a brother, Derrick Scott Colston; he is survived by his mother, Mary Olline Turner, Clarkesville, and is his wife of 44 years, Nancy Dean Colston, Gainesville. Other survivors include his sister, Kay Colston Williams, Canton; brothers and sisters-in- law Frank and Teresa Dean, Demorest; Bob and Ramona Glore, Toccoa; Barbara and Ruel Elliott, Cumming, his faithful fur buddy, Vernon;, several aunts and uncles as well as special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was also blessed with outstanding care givers in Augusta and at his bedside in Gainesville. They became family and lovingly cared for him throughout his healthcare journey. A celebration of life will be held for Wayne on Saturday, February 22, at 3:00 p.m. at Gainesville First United Methodist Church, with visitation and a reception to follow at the church. Charles Harman Lindsey April 12, 1925 - February 14, 2020 Col. (Retired) Charles Harman Lindsey, age 94 of Gainesville passed away Friday, February 14. Born in Atlanta, Col. Lindsey had lived in Hall County for a number of years. He was the son of the late John and Rebekah Harman Lindsey. Retired from the United States Army with over 30 years of service, Col. Lindsey served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, he also served in the National Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He also was a member of the Masons, Yaarab Shrine Temple, 33 degree Scottish Rite, Lanier Shrine Club, Gainesville Elks Club, Paul E. Bolding Post #7 American Legion and the Sons of American Revolution. Col. Lindsey was a lifelong Presbyterian. Survivors include his wife, Fay Hulsey Carver Lindsey; son, Scott Lindsey (Allene); daughters, Rebekah Lindsey Thompson (Joe); Susan Lindsey Lewis (Ted); stepson, Joseph Carver (Jessica); Nine grandchildren and Eight great grandchildren also survive. Col. Lindsey is preceded in death by his parents, wife of 56 years, Betty Lindsey and brother, Edward Lindsey. Carolyn (Moore) Brown December 2, 1928- February 19, 2020 Carolyn Moore Brown, age 91 of Gainesville, passed away Wednesday, February 19. Carolyn Moore Brown was born on December 2, 1928 in Boone, NC to Mary Dobbin Moore and Edwin O. Moore. Her childhood was spent in various towns in North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia. She studied at UNC Greensboro (then North Carolina Women’s College) and graduated from the University of Georgia, the first in her family to graduate from college. She married Roger H. Brown in 1952. He had proposed to her a few years before, but she told him to ask again when he had finished his college degree. They married and moved to Rome, GA where she taught middle school geography and coached athletic teams for four years. Carolyn raised one son, Roger H. Brown, Jr. She was an avid bridge player and golfer. One of her great sources of pride was having scored three holes-in-one over her golfing career. She water skied well into her 60’s. She started an investment club for women in Gainesville and was an ardent student of investing. For 35 years, she was a volunteer at Northeast Georgia Medical Center and also volunteered as a reading tutor for Head Start. She was an avid gardener and loved to make pickles and fig preserves. She enjoyed travel and visited many parts of Europe, Thailand, Kenya, South Africa, and Australia. Her first love was the ocean and she spent countless hours walking on Georgia beaches looking for sea shells - she was known for her ability to spot shark’s teeth. She was a loyal member of Grace Episcopal Church in Gainesville. She was strong-willed and determined in every aspect of her life. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband Roger, her brother Tom. She is survived by her son Roger, his children Farrell, Lucas and Grade Mason-Brown and her niece and nephews David Moore, Kelly Moore and Judy Moore Hulsman.
