Midtown office building Lamb, Britt Gilmer and Associates, a local sales and marketing company, wants more space and has plans to renovate a brick building at 743 Main St. The company has other offices in Alabama and North Carolina but employs 20 people at the Gainesville office. Tim Gilmer, the appli cant for the project, said the office space will pre serve much of the charac ter of the existing building. “This is going to be our home. We want this to be something that the commu nity, the midtown area and our company can be very proud of,” Gilmer said. Gilmer requested about $284,000 in TAD funding to pay for several parts of the project, including demoli tion, grading, paving, light ing and relocating power lines. The total project cost is almost $1.5 million. Gilmer said the adja cent building at 722 Brad ford St. will house a hair salon operated by one of his family members. He requested about $120,000 for that property because the office space and hair salon would share parking. However, while Gilmer requested about $284,000 in TAD funding, the proper ties on Main and Bradford streets are not estimated to generate that amount over 15 years. The proper ties are estimated to gen erate about $150,000, and staff recommended that $75,000 be paid upfront. Once that $75,000 has been replenished by the TAD increments generated, the applicant can then keep the extra funds generated above the base value. The properties can only be in the TAD for a maximum of 15 years. The TAD committee approved the staff recom mendation Thursday, and the Council will now have the final vote. The deputies reviewed the surveillance video and collected evidence from the business, where investiga tors believe the suspect used an ax to break in the front glass door. “Once inside, he attempted to use the axe to break into an ATM machine. Failing to open the machine, he attached a chain to it and attempted (to) pull it out with a car but was unsuc cessful,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derreck Booth wrote in a news release. The suspect then drove away. The department’s active criminal enforcement unit identified Bennett as the sus pect and found him within 12 hours at a residence on Misty Oak Drive in Flowery Branch. Bennett also had a war rant for second-degree criminal damage to prop erty from a May 6 inci dent, where he allegedly scratched the side of a car. The damage was more than $500. Bennett was booked into the Hall County Jail, where he remains. Bennett was previously charged with breaking the glass and stealing merchan dise at businesses across Oakwood and Gainesville in May.
