Nate McCullough | News Editor 770-718-3431 | news@gainesvilletimes.com The Times, Gainesville, Georgia Weekend Edition - June 20-21,2020 BUSINESS Hospitality industry had 73% jobless BY JEFF GILL jgill@gainesvilletimes.com The unemployment rate was 73% for those working in Hall County’s hospitality industry in April, or at the height of the shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “That was a devastating impact to our workforce in the community,” Stacey Dick son, Lake Lanier Convention & Visitors Bureau president, said Wednesday, June 17, during a tourism webinar sponsored by the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce. In comparison, the overall unemploy ment rate in Hall was 10.6% in April, an all-time high, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. Hall’s jobless numbers in May will be released later this month. “The good news is that, as businesses have been able to reopen, (the jobless) fig ure is more in the 25% range, so we are definitely rebounding,” Dickson said. “And hopefully, our businesses and our patrons will respect the guidelines that have been set forth... in order to be able to stay open. “Just because we’re emotionally tired of the pandemic doesn’t mean it’s gone. The more our local businesses are able to adapt and adhere to the restrictions, the fewer closures we’ll have to go through later.” The CVB is working with businesses on such tasks as putting in social distancing signs. “We’ve made 400 masks for front desk workers, housekeepers and others on the front lines in tourism, and all that is to be able to help our businesses stay open and be vital during this transition time,” Dickson said. There are some bright spots in the tourism economy, including talk of a federal tax credit for Americans taking vacations, she said. Otherwise, people are looking for trips closer to home. “Even in the midst of this depression situ ation, destinations like Lake Lanier are feel ing a kind of (boost),” Dickson said. “Our inquiries for information about travel have never been higher. The pent-up demand ... is so high for travel that now we’re having to figure out how to respond to that and help connect the dots for people.” PEEK INSIDE THE NEW NGHS MEDICAL PARK 2 Photos by SCOTT ROGERS I The Times The Northeast Georgia Health System’s new Medical Park 2 is open on Tuesday, June 16. The 72,000-square-foot medical office building is home to several Northeast Georgia Physicians Group practices, including some that will incorporate resident physicians and a new retail pharmacy. A patient treatment room is open Tuesday, June 16, inside the new Medical Park 2. Radiology coordinator Jessica Roberts shows off an X-ray room inside the new Medical Park 2. Georgia unemployment rate shows improvement in May BY JEFF GILL jgill@gainesvilletimes.com Georgia’s preliminary May jobless rate is 9.7%, dropping from April’s 12.6%, accord ing to the Georgia Department of Labor. The number of those working was up 144,877 over April, but down 480,592 compared to this time last year, and totals 4.4 million, the depart ment said in a news release Thursday, June 18. “I think we are going to continue to see big drops in the unemployment rate as Georgia continues to open back up,” Commissioner Mark Butler said. “We have to remember that the recent unemployment was not caused by an economic catalyst, but instead by a medical emergency. Those jobs are still out there for the most part.” The Hall County area’s unemployment rate for May was not available Thursday. The job less rate hit 10.6% in April, an all-time high. In April 2019, Hall’s jobless rate was 2.6%. Hall’s jobless rate increased by more than 7 percentage points between March and April 2020, during widespread business shut downs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The rate in March was 3.4%, according to the labor department. “I think as Georgia starts to reopen, we’ve got to really take a look at where the perma nent job losses are going to be,” Butler said. “Through our strategic partnerships, we can help match those individuals who may have lost their job to the many job openings currently available, even if that takes some retraining.” More than 95,000 jobs are listed online at EmployGeorgia.com. The department says it offers online resources for finding a job, building a resume and helping with other reemployment needs.
