Jones, 79, of Powhatan, Va., formerly of Commerce, died peacefully at her home Aug. 16 surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice H. and Fred H. Tanner, and brother, Dr. Terrell B. Tanner. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, W. Hardman Jones Jr.; daughter Laura Jones (Jeff Burke) of Madison, Wis.; son Will Jones (Christin) of Midlothian, Va.; grandsons Tanner Jones of Arlington, Va. and Graham Jones of Midlothian, Va.; sister Nancy Stewart (Carter) of Baldwin; and countless other relatives and friends. Born in Concord, N.C., Amanda grew up on Cherry Street in Commerce, where she and her future husband met as kindergarteners. After dating as classmates at Commerce High School and the University of Georgia, the couple married in June 1962 at First United Methodist Church and began a lifetime of adventures. Hardman’s service in the U.S. Navy allowed them to explore both coasts, including St. Simons Island, which became their vacation destination for nearly 50 years. Amanda and Hardman settled in Richmond, Va. before retiring in nearby Powhatan, where they became faithful members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Amanda worked as a teacher and in retail, and volunteered for her church and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Blessed with bright blue eyes, an endearing laugh and a radiant smile, she aged but never grew old. She had a generous spirit that lifted those close to her, and her loving care filled her gardens with color. She delighted in her family, music, books and well-prepared meals, and she savored her role as her grandsons’ Nana. Her final wish was peace for herself and those dear to her. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to First United Methodist Church, 16 Cherry St., Commerce, GA 30529, or St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 2245 Huguenot Trail, Powhatan, VA 23139. The family will hold a private memorial service. Carrie Sharp Harrison Died August 17, 2020 Carrie Sharp Harrison, age 54, of Kennesaw, Georgia passed away August 17, 2020 following a short illness. Carrie was born October 5, 1965 to the late Capt. Lufkin Scott Sharp and the late Ann Sharp Pilgrim. She lived most of her life in Gainesville, Georgia. She was a member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church. The love of her life was her daughter Katie Finnegan. In addition to her parents, Carrie was preceded in death by her husband James (Jimmy) Harrison. Survivors include: daughter Katie Finnegan, Seattle, WA; boyfriend Jeff Bland, Kennesaw; sister and brother-in-law Cathy and Justin Burns, Gainesville; stepfather James (Debra) Pilgrim, Gainesville; niece and nephews: Sarah Beth (Shea) Barger, Athens; Andy (Brittany) Tankersley, Gainesville; Chris (Chessie) Tankersley, Birmingham, AL. Charles Daniel Walters August 16, 2020 Charles Daniel Walters, 81, husband of Pam Walters, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 16, 2020. Born in Matthews, NC on April 5, 1939, he was the son of the late Daniel Poe and Gladys Walters Rogers. He had a very tender heart that gave so much to his family, friends and others over the years that it finally wore out. Mr. Walters graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC in 1957. In 1959, he began his lifelong career in the finance industry. This took him and his family to live in Mississippi, North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, South Carolina, and Texas, where he and his wife, Pam, began their own business, Pioneer Loans of Texas. He later sold the company to World Acceptance Corporation, headquartered in Greenville, SC. Ultimately, he became President, CEO and Chairman of the Board. Charlie successfully led a management buy out from First Union Corporation in 1989 and was successful in taking the company public in 1991, which was one of the biggest challenges of his career. Upon retirement, he was named Chairman Emeritus. He was past-President of Texas Finance Institute, Georgia Industrial Loan Association, Director of Independent Consumer Finance of South Carolina. He served in various capacities on its Governmental Affairs Committee as a legislative liaison. Charles was past- President of American Financial Services in Washington, D.C. His service extended to the Consumer Credit Advisory Council for the S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs. Survivors include his wife, Pam Walters, to whom he was married for almost 60 years; daughters, Windi Singleton (Dennis) of Simpsonville, SC and Wanda Maestas (Nick) of Jacksonville, Texas; son, Dan Walters (Fran) of Simpsonville, SC, all of whom were by his side the last two weeks of his life; the blessing of eight grandchildren includes, Cassadie Singleton, Charlie Singleton, Brad Singleton, Bill Hunt, Ben Hunt, Austin Walters, Hallie Walters, and Christy Walters; one special great-granddaughter, Harper Hunt; brothers, Jim Walters (Peggy) of Gainesville, GA and Roger “Buck” Walters (Jackie) of Cashiers, NC; sister-in-law, Carolyn Walters Clinard of Little River, SC; nieces and nephew who were much loved also. In addition to his parents, Mr. Walters was preceded in death by his younger brother, Joe. Charlie generously supported the Meyer Center, MUSC School of Medicine in Greenville, SC, The Peace Center, The Children’s Museum, and International Ballet. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner. Golf, hunting and dancing were his favorite hobbies. The Walters are members of John Knox Presbyterian Church and the Poinsett Club. In 2006, he was included in the Entrepreneurs Forum of Greenville. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Gerald Vaz, Dr. Suzanne Fanning, the staff of Open Arms Hospice and the McCall Hospice House, a special caregiver, Tameka Gambrell, along with Carletta Glenn and Anita Smith. A funeral services were held Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. in Graceland East Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown Dennis Gordon Lieburn August 15, 2020 Dennis Gordon Lieburn, 72, of Gainesville, formerly of Racine, WI, died Saturday, August 15, 2020, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Willie Dean Lieburn, his sister Ruth Elaine White, and many nieces and nephews. He graduated from high school in 1965, served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1975, and worked as an industrial maintenance electrician until retirement. Gail Adams Thomas Died August 12, 2020 Gail Adams Thomas, 72, of Gainesville, GA died at her home on August 12, 2020. Her dear friend, Debbie Quintiliani, was by her side. Gail was born on January 2, 1948 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and graduated from North Forsyth Senior High School in 1966. In 1969 she earned a degree as a Registered Nurse from High Point Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Gail maintained a strong connection to the people and state of North Carolina. A child of Quakers and a lifelong student of history—she held close the values of patience, peace, and acceptance of others. Gail spent the latter part of her career working at Spectrum IV where she met some of her closest friends. She maintained deep friendships throughout her life and she was a loyal and dedicated snail mail correspondent. To anyone whom Gail sent a birthday, holiday, or card of support (or a clipped newspaper article), you were her close friends and an endless source of joy. In 1973, she met the love of her life, Dr. Fred Burgess Thomas, Jr. and they married the following year. In 1978, they moved to Gainesville and built a life together on Lake Lanier, where they filled their home with dear friends, a menagerie of pets, and reared two loving children. Fred and Gail shared a love of vintage boats and participated in numerous wooden boat shows, and their love of artisan cars led them to compete in Porsche Rally and AutoCross events both locally and abroad. They traveled the world together visiting friends throughout Europe. Gail especially loved exploring the small villages of England, Germany and Switzerland. Fred and Gail were lovingly married for 23 years. That bond continued for her remaining 23 years after his untimely death. Gail was a former member of the Junior League of Gainesville and a volunteer puppeteer with the Kids on the Block. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, a Daughter of the King and a former parish office volunteer. She also donated her time as a driver through ITNLanier. At 57, Gail was the recipient of a heart transplant, and the successful surgery turned her into a fierce advocate for organ donation and transplantation. Gail and her family are forever grateful to her heart donor, her doctors in Gainesville and for the care she received at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Gail was preceded in death by Fred, her parents Mark and Ruth Adams, her brother Don Adams, and his wife, Jean, her sister-in-law Barbara Thomas Schill and her husband Bill. She is survived by her children Haynes and Courtney Thomas, her step-daughter Carrie Leigh Thomas, 3 grandchildren, Martina, Benjamin, and Felix Porcel, her sister-in law Mary Lynn Cheek- Reynolds, and her great- aunts, Faye Nelson and Willena Moore. Gail’s life was marked by innumerable trials, but is measured by boundless grace. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Jimmy was born June 2, 1937 in Gainesville, to the late Garland and Lillie Myers Forrester. He retired from the Hall County Sheriff’s Department Nov. 1996, after 33 years of service. His favorite things in life were spending time with his wife of 61 years, enjoying time with his children and grandchildren and golfing and was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. Jimmy was a resident of Gateway Health & Rehab for the past 4 1/2 years. We would like to express our deep appreciation and thanks to the staff at Gateway Health and Rehab and Pruitt Hospice. In addition to his parents Jimmy is preceded in death by his brothers, Huel, Verden and Larry Forrester and sister; Omazelle Carter. Thomas M. Henderson, Jr. Died August 18, 2020 Mr. Thomas “Tom” M. Henderson, Jr. age 83 of Braselton, Ga passed away on Tuesday August 18, 2020 at his residence following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Friday August 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Chestnut Mountain Presbyterian Church with interment to follow in Chestnut Mountain Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Reverend John Batusic will officiate. The family received friends on Thursday August 20, 2020 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Tom was born on June 15, 1937 in Jefferson, Ga to the late Marion Henderson and Frances Hale Henderson. Mr. Henderson served two years with the Air National Guard. He was a member of Chestnut Mountain Church and retired from Green Acres- Mobile Home Company where he was a Co-Owner and Developer. Tom graduated from the University of Georgia and enjoyed attending the UGA Football games with his family. Tom cherished his family and the time he spent with them traveling. Tom and his sons spent many special times together showing horses and also working on the farm. He is preceded in death by his parents.
