LIFE The Times, Gainesville, Georgia | gainesvilletimes.comMidweek Edition - September 9-10, 2020 7B Dawsonville, festival at odds over mask mandate ALLIE DEAN I Dawson County News A car heads up the parade in Dawsonville during a previous annual Mountain Moonshine Festival. Dawson County News The Dawsonville City Council has chosen to postpone a decision on the upcoming 53rd annual Mountain Moonshine Festival until this week, after a special called meeting failed to resolve outstanding questions about the festival’s safety procedures and locations. The meeting Sept. 2 resulted from an ongoing discussion between local leaders and rep resentatives from K.A.R.E. for Kids, on how the festival could continue during the COVID-19 pandemic. At a previous meeting, Daw sonville City Council members presented a list of guidelines that would need to be followed at the festival in order for an event permit to be granted. Those guidelines included enforcement of mask use by all vendors and attendees, place ment of hand sanitizer pumps at each booth and a limit on the number of streets closed for the festival. According to K.A.R.E. for Kids President Rhonda Goodwin, they are willing to comply with all of the city’s requirements for the festival, except for the face masks requirement. “I think it’s important at this point to say that the require ment for all vendors and attend ees to wear masks and for us to enforce that is just something that we cannot do,” Goodwin said to the council. “We feel like we can meet all the rest of the recommendations. ” In response, Dawsonville Mayor Mike Eason said that the city’s request for a mask man date at the festival is of utmost importance during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially since the majority of attendees are from outside Dawsonville. “Keeping in mind that Daw- sonville’s numbers are down right now, the people that come to the Mountain Moonshine Fes tival are primarily from out of town,” Eason said. “We want to try to protect everybody as much as possible and to be a good stew ard for the citizens here as well as the people who come, so we would like for y’all to try to work with us on that and come up with apian.” Addressing the festival mask requirement, Council Mem ber Mark French, said that the Moonshine Festival is beneficial to the entire Dawsonville com munity and urged the other coun cil members to help K.A.R.E. for Kids find a solution to the problem. “Due to the reach and scope of the project that they carry out and the benefit that it pres ents our entire community, I think that it would be very ill- advised not to allow them the opportunity to do their very best to do what we are request ing them to do and what they are proposing,” French said. “I’m sure we can reach some agreement.” The festival has 92 vendors signed up for the event. Accord ing to Goodwin, they believe that all the vendors can be fit on Allen Street, Memory Lane and Main Street Park in Dawsonville, fol lowing the city’s request on limit ing local streets closed down for the festival. But according to Eason, prior to the meeting, K.A.R.E. for Kids had not submitted an official plan to the council for approval. Because of this, the council was unable to make a decision on whether to grant a permit for the festival. “I apologize that we did not submit everything,” Goodwin said. “We were 100% under the impression after the last meeting that we were coming back for a work session, not for a special called meeting.” Council members voted to postpone the decision until Sept. 10. “What we need for you to do is to get your plan together and to submit it three business days before our meeting so our coun cil members have time to read it and digest it and make recom mendations,” Eason said. “We want this thing to happen, I think all of us here would like for the Moonshine Festival to go on, but we’ve got an obligation to try to protect our community.” COMMUNIS NEWS Gainesville native honored with 2020 UNG Teaching Excellence Award Charlene Hudson, a Gainesville native, was recently hon ored with the 2020 University of North Georgia Teaching Excellence Award for Non-Tenure Track Faculty. Hudson, who works as a political science professor at UNG’s Gainesville campus, was recog nized during the virtual fall convocation on Aug. 10. The award is presented annually to non tenure track faculty who have “consis tently demonstrated outstanding teaching, which includes all activities in which fac ulty members engage to facilitate learning by undergraduate, professional or gradu ate students.” Hudson LIVING WITH CHILDREN Don’t ask kids, tell them what to do A grandmother in Arkansas says her adult children have great diffi culty telling their children what to do. They turn instructions — more accurately, what they think are instructions — into questions and then wonder why their kids don’t seem to appreciate their timidity. Grandma’s email made me think of a habit I have noticed among people a generation or more younger than myself. To wit, when they order food in a restaurant, they ask if they are allowed to have whatever they want. For example, when ordering a hamburger, instead of say ing, “I’ll have a hamburger” or “I’d like a hamburger, please,” they ask, “Can I have a hamburger?” What’s with that? You’re in a hamburger joint. The word hamburger is printed clearly on the menu. The owner of said joint is obviously in the business of making money selling hamburgers. Set ting aside, for the moment, that “may I have” is gram matically correct, why are you asking if you can have a hamburger? Has some hamburger salesperson ever denied you, as in “No ham burger for you. Try again”? It occurred to me that there may be some genera tional connection between asking a person behind a fast food counter if you are allowed to order an item that is clearly printed on the menu and asking chil dren “how about” questions that end in “OK?” Example: “How about help ing Mommy pick up these toys now, OK?” Is the person who orders food passively also or someday going to be a parent who gives passive instructions to his or her kids? That’s where the analogy breaks down because whereas the ham burger worker isn’t going to deny the hamburger, a child can be counted on to defy the passive non-instruction. He doesn’t want to, it’s not fair, he didn’t put them all there, or just downright “no.” It’s why, when I counsel with parents, I spend lots of time telling them how to talk to children, teaching them how to sound like authority figures. “If you want Billy to pick up his toys, simply say, “Billy, I want you to pick up your toys.” And then, I tell said parents, “Don’t stand there, waiting. That invites push-back. Just walk away.” Respect is not an entitle ment. It isn’t deserved; it’s earned. People in positions of authority earn respect by act ing like they know what they want. That begins with mak ing oneself perfectly clear, as in, “I’d like a hamburger.” And then, of course, “Thank you.” Family psychologist John Rosemond answers parents’ questions online at www. rosemond.com or via email questions@rosemond.com.
