A Celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2020 at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel, 989 Riverside Drive, Gainesville, GA. 30501 Dr. Bill Coates will officiate. The family will receive friends at Memorial Park North Riverside Funeral Home on Friday, October 30th from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Dr. Richardson was born on March 17, 1937. An Attleboro, Massachusetts native who adopted Gainesville, Georgia as his home, where he served the community for over 50 years. The last country doctor has decided to establish a new office on the “top floor” that is bigger, brighter, and everlasting. He feels overwhelmed with happiness to be reunited with his sister Diane, his dad and mother Ruth, along with his dog Jennifer. He is excited to finally meet Larry Munson and Elvis Presley (as soon as Elvis arrives). He takes with him his love for UGA Football (Go Dawgs!), despite being a University of Florida Gator graduate. Dr. Richardson was a Coast Guard Veteran. He leaves behind his joy of Good & Plenty along with Necco Candy Wafers. He also leaves behind his library of old- fashioned ditties, some of which, many of you can never forget. He is survived by his wife Janet, his brother Bruce (Darlene), and his children - Lisa James (Randy), Robin Seabolt (David), Michael Richardson (Sarah Bernal), and Beth Richardson (Travis); his stepchildren - Morey, McCann, and Ari LeFeve; 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Barrett, age 85, of Lula, Georgia went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 25, 2020. Mr. Barrett was born on June 9, 1935 to the late Elzie and Cirene Echols Barrett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Rita J. Barrett; grandson, McKenzie Crenshaw; and brother-in-law, Lewis McDonald. Mr. Barrett was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Gainesville. He was an avid lover of antique cars, taking time to work on and restore them. Ed was a loving and dedicated father and grandfather; he was known to his grandchildren as“Papa”and “Papa Ed”. Telephone: 706-778-7123 Whitfield Funeral Homes & Crematory George Petro, Sr. Died October, 23,2020 Mr. George Petro, Sr., age 64, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, October 23, 2020 following a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Petro was born in Pittston, PA on February 1, 1956 to the late Thomas and Constance Poli Petro. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by all his siblings, Thomas Jr., Grace, Patrick, and Neena. Mr. Petro served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps for three years. He then enlisted in the United States Army where he served for seventeen years. After retirement from the military, he worked at Mobile Communications in Gainesville, GA. Mr. Petro was a loving husband and father. He loved carpentry, landscaping projects, and spending time at his koi pond. He especially enjoyed caring for his miniature pinscher “Landon,” and you could often find him at the Ranger Breakfast with fellow veterans. Mr. Petro was beloved by his family and friends and will be dearly missed. Survivors include his wife of forty-six years, Barbara Ziegler Petro, Dahlonega; sons George Petro, Jr., MD, Dawsonville, Anthony Petro, PhD, and life partner Patrick McKelvey, PhD, Pittsburgh, PA, and Ryan Petro, Dahlonega; and several nieces and nephews. A service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday October 30, 2020 in the Little- Davenport Funeral Home Chapel of Gainesville. A private family graveside will be held at Georgia National Cemetery. Henry loved his family immensely and is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary June; daughter Ellen Woodard Carey (Greg); son Robert Eldon Woodard (Linda); son Gordon Lee Woodard (Grace); and son David Keith Woodard (Patricia). Pa Woody was a gentle and loving man who was very fond of his fourteen grandchildren (Tyler, Agatha, Zachary, Ben, Daniel, Rebecca, Jim, Hannah, Max, David, Gregory, Sam, Marianne and Levi) and nine great grandchildren (Juliet, Henry, June, Maggie Jane, Owen, Jimmy, Clarke and Connor). He was preceded in death by his parents, Eldon Ernest Woodard and Ollie Mae Woodard, nine siblings and their spouses, and grand daughter Rebecca Carey. Joining the U.S. Navy, Henry served as a radioman aboard the U.S.S. Burleigh in WWII. After his discharge, he attended the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine. He graduated with his DVM in 1952, then operated private veterinary practices in Dickson, TN and Paris, TN. He eventually sold his practice to start a career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Meat Inspection Division, and moved his family to North Carolina, Memphis, TN, and finally to Stone Mountain, GA. He became the State Director of the Georgia Meat Inspection Program. In retirement, Henry and June moved to Habersham County, GA to start Doubletree Christmas Tree Farm. After 20 years, their second retirement was to Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville, GA. Henry was always active in the churches he attended and often served in leadership positions. Henry grew up on a farm in Carroll County, TN and always had a passion for planting, growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables. He was a voracious reader of news, agriculture, science, investing and fiction. His interests included playing the harmonica and hammered dulcimer. He also wrote poetry. In addition to his immediate family, Henry is survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and many beloved neighbors and friends. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him and loved him. Herbert James Haberkam Died September 2, 2020 Herbert James Haberkam, a dedicated, loving husband and father, passed away September 2, 2020 at the age of 49. Herb was always known for having a wonderful sense of humor, an infectious laugh and a kind, compassionate spirit. He is deeply loved and will be missed tremendously. After proudly serving in the Navy during Desert Storm, Herb moved with his family from Tracy, CA to Douglasville, GA. This was the start to a successful Industrial Refrigeration Technician career. Family was Herb’s greatest joy and happiness. His other passions included collecting old coins, fishing and sports of any kind. He especially enjoyed football and was an avid Oakland Raiders and Oregon Ducks fan. Herb was preceded in death by parents, Herbert C. and Joan, brother Michael and sister Monica. He is survived by wife Cheryl (Wallstedt); four children Chelsey (Matthew), Joseph, Jacob (Lacie) and Savannah; 3 granddaughters; and sister Trina. Jean Longino Hiler Died October 13, 2020 Jean Longino Hiler, 91 of Blairsville, GA, went to be with her Lord on October 13, 2020. Born on September 3, 1929, in Dallas, TX, she was the daughter of the late Colonels James Absolum Longino Sr. & Monica Farrar Longino. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Douglas John Hiler; brother, James A. Longino Jr.; in-laws, Milo Joseph & Gertrude Downer Hiler; granddaughter, Monica Suzanne Godfrey; and several uncles, aunts, and cousins. Jean Hiler, without a doubt, believed in God and that God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, into our world to live with and in believers, by the Holy Spirit, to receive eternal life! Being raised in the Salvation Army, as Corps Cadet she was published in The Young Soldier authoring the article Music and Its Place in Our Worship. Music continued to play a big role in her life. When Jean married Bob, an Air Force Sergeant, in 1952, they joined the Catholic Church & started a family having five children. She was a very active member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church of Gainesville, GA, & especially St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Blairsville, GA, where she loved volunteering as pianist/organist, choir leader/member, serving as cantor & lay Eucharistic Minister, fall festival worker, member of the Women’s Guild and the Secular Franciscan Order to name a few. Jean’s education consisted of a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology/Economics from Agnes Scott College, Decatur, GA, Master of Education as an Educational Specialist and Doctor of Education Degree in Reading Education (minor- Educational Psychology) from University of Georgia, Athens, GA. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phil Delta Kappa, Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, Outstanding Educators of America 1971, Who’s Who in the South & Southwest 1986/87, Who’s Who in the World 1997, Who’s Who of American Women 1995/1996, International Reading Association, Georgia Sociological Association, The National Republican Congressional Committee, and Congressional Order of Merit 2006. Her employment history included: Insurance Rater for Allstate, Stewardess for United Airlines, Secretary for The Child Salvation Army, Typist for Civil Service & Selfridge AFB, Social Worker for Atlanta Family & Children’s Services & Teaching. She taught at Riverbend Elementary & East Hall High Schools of Gainesville, GA before beginning her career with Gainesville Junior College in Oakwood, GA. From 1968-87, Jean was a faculty member of Gainesville Junior College; 1973- 85 Chairman of Developmental Studies Program; 1975-87 Tenured Professor of Reading & Sociology; and 1986-87 Acting Chairman of the Division of Social Sciences. She was a speaker at conferences and a consultant for the Southern Regional Educational Board from 1975-83 and Gainesville College from 1987-95. In 1988, the Board of Regents of the University of Georgia conferred on Dr. Monica Jean Hiler the title of Professor Emerita of Reading & Sociology at Gainesville College. In 1987, Jean retired her teaching, but she did not retire her involvement in her community. She was appointed as a special advocate of the Juvenile Court of Union County, GA, 1994-96; church organist, pianist, and choir director 1964-82 & 1988-96; assistant church organist & pianist 1999-2011; President of the Church Women United of Georgia from 1992-94; named the 1994 Woman of the Year at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Blairsville, GA.; and 1995 St. Francis of Assisi of Blairsville, Outstanding Catholic Woman of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, GA, Well done, good and faithful servant. She enjoyed bowling, sewing, baking blueberry & pecan pies, making blueberry, raspberry, apple, and peach jellies, many delicious cakes, sending cards, calling to check on people, praying, and visiting. Jean published poems, prayers, educational articles, and a book of her mother’s devotional writings called Reflections: A Collection of Spiritual Messages written by Monica C. Farrar Longino. The love for her family was extraordinary and spending time with Bob and their five children was the joy of her life! Bob and Jean traveled the world from Korea, Australia, Israel, Italy, and Canada just to name a few! They enjoyed meeting new people and making lasting friendships.
