Thrift store franchise opens Gainesville spot

A Value Village franchise
is opening in Gainesville,
and the owner believes it
will add another reasonably
priced option for clothing
and furniture.
“The area really needs
to have something with a
cost point that’s better for
the value,” said Value Vil
lage franchise owner Tom
Stutzman. “There’s noth
ing in this area like us and I
don’t think anyone does the
job that we do.”
Located next to Get Air
Trampoline Park in the
Browns Bridge Crossing
shopping center, the new
store will have 30-35 employ
ees, Stutzman said.
The store features wide
aisles, making it easier for
employees and customers
to coexist among the clothes,
shoes, socks, new and used
furniture and household
items, said Stutzman, who
has been in the retail busi
ness for over four decades
and personally owns 11
Value Village franchises
throughout metro Atlanta.
“All of our stores are like
this. I just think it makes it
easier to shop,” Stutzman
said.
He added that the interior
and exterior construction,
including the shipment and
placement of the goods for
the space, took just under
three weeks to complete.
A storefront had to be cre
ated and carved out of the
brick wall that was once in
its place. Major utilities were
also installed or replaced in
the space, including the ven
tilation for central air condi
tioning and heat.

Value Village purchases
all of the store’s merchan
dise from the American
Kidney Fund, a Maryland-
based qualified 501(c)(3)
organization that receives
donations from the public
and spends 97 % of every dol
lar value donated, according
to the organization’s web
site. Stutzman believes this
makes for a unique shopping
experience for customers.

“It’s going back to the
community,” Stutzman said
of the money spent at Value
Village. “I just feel like it’s
something we need to do.
You don’t feel like you’re in
a thrift store.”

ness, according to a family
statement. He was 70.
The board game, origi
nally called The Settlers
of Catan when introduced
in 1995 and based on a set
of hexagonal tiles, has sold
tens of millions of copies
and is available in more
than 40 languages. It has
spawned dozens of spinoffs
and new editions, including
electronic versions, not to
mention products related
to the game.
“It is with great sadness
and a heavy heart that the
Teuber family announces
their beloved husband
and father Klaus Teuber
passed away at the age of
70 on April 1, 2023 after a
short and serious illness,”
said the statement posted
on the German-language
Catan website. The family
requested privacy.
A statement from the
Catan studio team on social
media noted that “While
Klaus’ contributions to the
board gaming industry
are immeasurable, we will
remember him most as a
kind and selfless human
being, an inspirational
leader, and most impor
tantly, as a friend.”
Teuber was born in
June 1952 in the German
town of Rai-Breitenbach.
He was working as a den
tal technician in the 1980s
outside the industrial city
of Darmstadt when he took
up designing board games
in his basement, he told
The New Yorker magazine
in 2014. “I had many prob
lems with the company and
the profession,” he said. “I
developed games to escape.
This was my own world I
created.”
