LIFE The Times, Gainesville, Georgia lgainesvilletimes.com Weekend Edition-February 16-17, 2024 3B KITCHEN INSPECTIONS: FEB. 8-14, 2024 Times Staff Reports Nearly 40 food service establishments were inspected this week, and almost all rated an “A.” A few of them scored perfect 100s. Only two establishments scored a “B.” This week's low score was 86. How it works Food service establishments are given a letter grade that corresponds to a percentile: “A” (90-100), “B” (80-89), “C” (70- 79), “U” (69 and below). Inspections (and their frequency) are conducted based on risk categorization. The risk type is determined by the menu items served, the food preparation processes performed and the previous food safety history in that establishment. A new food service establishment that has never served food must score 100 (A) to receive a permit to operate. When a restaurant changes ownership, a new food service permit must be issued. To be issued a permit for a change of ownership, the establishment must score a 95 (A) or above with all foodborne illness risk factors and public health interventions in compliance. Permits must be posted in public view at all times. Establishments with drive-thru windows are required to have the top one-third of a copy of the most current inspection report visible through each window, allowing customers to easily read the score, date of inspection and establishment information, in addition to the copy posted inside the establishment. Copies of the rules are available at the Hall County Environmental Health Office. The rules and regulations are also available online at dph.georgia.gov/ environmental-health-inspections. To register a complaint against a food service establishment, contact the Hall County Environmental Health Department at 770-531-3973. But some of the summer weeds that invade our lawns and aggravate us need to be dealt with now while they are beginning to germinate in early spring. One of these pesky weeds is crabgrass. Crabgrass is a warm season annual grass that germinates in the early spring and can be frustrating to control in lawns during the summer. When taking a close look at crabgrass, it appears to be covered in tiny hairs and is purple at its base. Also, due to it having a wide leaf blade it often sticks out in most fine textured lawns. Usually, by the time you notice its presence, it's already too late to treat. This is because like your lawn, crabgrass is also a type of grass. Most selective herbicides you pick up from a garden center contain ingredients that target broadleaf weeds like white clover, but won't harm your lawn grass. However, when you have grassy weeds in your lawn like crabgrass, dallisgrass, or goosegrass, you run out of herbicide choices that can be applied that won't also injure your lawn. In these cases, I recommend using pre-emergent herbicides in the early spring. Pre-emergent herbicides are products that kill weeds before they emerge from the ground. Crabgrass is an annual-type weed. This means that every year at the end of its life cycle it puts out seed, dies, and then those seeds emerge next year when the soil temperature reaches a certain point. Pre-emergent herbicides can be very useful against annual weeds like this because they are designed to not harm established plants like your lawn or shrubs, but kill seed in the ground shortly after it germinates. With pre-emergent herbicides, timing is everything. If you apply these types of products after the weed emerges, they will not work. Crabgrass seed starts to germinate in lawns when soil temperatures at 4 inches deep reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit for five consecutive days. In Hall County, this typically occurs in mid- to late February. This week, our soil temperatures in Hall County have been in the high 40s to low 50s. Pre- emergent herbicides have activity in the soil for 6-8 weeks typically. That means that the time to put these products out for crabgrass is now. Try to select pre-emergent herbicides that contain the active ingredient, Pendimethalin. Pendimethalin, has high activity on crabgrass and is one of the most common ingredients I see in pre-emergent herbicides available at our local garden centers in Hall County. You may want to check the weather forecast and select an application day when there is light rain on the way. Usually, a half inch of rainfall or irrigation is needed after applying these products for them to be effective. Always follow the label directions of any herbicide you select, and remember that the most effective weed control combines herbicides with management that promote a healthy, vigorously growing lawn that out-competes the weeds. You have questions about pre-emergent herbicides for your lawn, or any question about lawn care, you can always cdl us at the Hall County Extension office. FROM IB 2 Dog previous ownership. New menu items include the Okla homa Burger, two beef pat ties with caramelized onions cooked into them; a Cuban sandwich; and Cajun-style shrimp and grits. Also, Furey said, the daily specials will be all new. For now, the 2 Dog and Indian menus will remain side by side, at least on Saturdays and Sundays. But that may change depending on customer feedback, Patel said. “When we bought this place, they (Tim and Tina Roberts) wanted me to cook completely Indian food, to bring the whole concept here as an Indian res taurant,” Patel told The Times. “But I am thinking that I want to start it gradually.” If the ini tial Indian offerings prove pop ular, the Patels may offer more. One thing that won't change is 2 Dog's hours: The restau rant will be open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As before, 2 Dog will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Some dating apps encourage ‘compulsive’ use, lawsuit says BY BARBARA 0RTUTAY AP Technology Writer Stuck in a dating app loop with no date in sight? A lawsuit filed Wednesday against Match Group claims that is by design. Tinder, Hinge and other Match dating apps are filled with addictive features that encourage “compulsive” use, the proposed class-action lawsuit claims. The lawsuit filed in federal court in the Northern District of California on Wednesday — Valentine's Day — says Match intentionally designs its dating platforms with game-like features that “lock users into a perpetual pay-to-play loop” prioritizing profit over promises to help users find relationships. This, the suit claims, turns users into “addicts” who purchase ever- more-expensive subscriptions to access special features that promise romance and matches. “Match's business model depends on generating returns through the monopolization of users' attention, and Match has guaranteed its market success by fomenting dating app addiction that drives expensive subscriptions and perpetual use,” the lawsuit says. It was filed by six dating app users and seeks class action status. Representatives for Dallas- based Match did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Though it focuses on adults, the lawsuit comes as tech companies face increasing scrutiny over addictive features that harm young people's mental health. Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, for instance, faces a lawsuit by dozens of states accusing it of contributing to the youth mental health crisis by designing features on Instagram and Facebook that addict children to its platforms. Match's apps, according to the lawsuit against the company, “employs recognized dopamine- manipulating product features” to turn users into “gamblers locked in a search for psychological rewards that Match makes elusive on purpose.”
