4A Midweek Edition-April 3-4, 2024 The Times, Gainesville, Georgia I gainesvilletimes.com Elizabeth Snowden Ellard March 26, 2024 Elizabeth Snowden Ellard, of Gainesville, Georgia, died on Tuesday, March 26. She was 95. She was raised in Monro eville, Alabama, the daugh ter of Raymond Carl (R.C.) and Willie Dale Snowden. She was a graduate of the University of Alabama, kept in touch with fellow mem bers of the university’s Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and remained a lifelong Bama fan (Roll Tide). She enjoyed conversing, always showing interest in the other person, and mak ing and maintaining friend ships. She loved to read and learn, for example, through Brenau Univer sity’s BULLI programs. She often shared fruits of her labors with her children, sending each of them manila envelopes filled with annotated photocop ies and clippings. She was kind, gracious, calm, warm, and cheerful and liked to laugh. She was a follower of Jesus Christ, for many years as a member of First Baptist Church, Gaines ville, Georgia, and, while a resident of WillowBrooke Court at Lanier Village Estates, as a member of fellowship groups there. Her children thank the personnel of WillowBrooke Court, including the nurses, nursing assistants, and chaplains (including Duke Walker), for their care for her, and thank everyone who visited her there. Mrs. Ellard was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, P. Martin Ellard, as well as by her parents and her sister, Louise Snowden Rice of Birmingham, Alabama. Survivors include her son, Daniel Pope Ellard and his wife, Meredith (Muffy) of Bettendorf, Iowa; daughter, Nancy Snowden Ellard, Washington, D.C.; son, William Martin (Bill) Ellard and his wife, Mary- Elizabeth, Atlanta, Georgia; grandson Garrett Snowden Ellard and his wife, Allysa, North Liberty, Iowa; grand son Schaffer McKay Ellard, North Liberty, Iowa; great granddaughter, Payson JoAnn Ellard, and great grandson, Connor Lee Ellard, each of North Lib erty, Iowa; and her sister’s children, Dale Rice Naylor (Jim) of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Grantland Rice III (Jan) of Birmingham, Alabama. Services have not yet been scheduled. Interment will be next to the grave of her husband in Alta Vista Cem etery in Gainesville. Jo Anne Peek Dillashaw May 2, 1952- March 27,2024 Jo Anne Peek Dillashaw, age 71, of Cornelia, passed away on Wednesday, March 27. Born on May 2, 1952, in Albany, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Dewey Wayne Peek and Margaret Louise Wright Peek. Mrs. Dillashaw was retired from Martin Furniture and was of the Methodist faith. She was also a loving homemaker, who enjoyed such things as folding laundry and working in her garden. Mrs. Dillashaw loved her family dearly, and her dedication was displayed by her enjoyment of the times spent with each of them. She was also very fond of her dog, Larry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Steve Peek. Survivors include husband, Bill Dillashaw of Cornelia; son and fiancee, Chris Dillashaw (Star Jones) of Cornelia; son and daughter-in-law, Clay Dillashaw (Bonnie) of Cornelia; grandchildren, Tori, Ethan, Claire, Evan, Luke, and Isabella Dillashaw; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary Peek (Cathy) of Albany, Georgia, and David Peek (Lorrie) of Sasser, Georgia; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Larkin B. Vance March 24th 2024 Vance was a soldier. More importantly, he was a hus band, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. We admired and respected his service and loved him for his sweet smile, dry humor, and positive out look on life. Retired Army Colonel Larkin B. Vance passed on Sunday, March 24th, at 95. He entered the military in December 1943 at age 15 and served during WWII. Vance fought in campaigns in the Philippines and Okinawa Island. He gradu ated from the University of Nebraska and entered Offi cer Cadet School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia. He graduated as a distin guished military officer in 1952, followed by comple tion of airborne training. Vance served as an Infan try Officer and became a Special Forces Officer in Germany in 1957. He was a Green Beret with the 10th Special Forces Group in Germany. Vance also served 12 years in special warfare operations, includ ing a tour in the Belgian Congo. He attended the Armed Forces Staff Col lege, and the Command and General Staff College. After completing both mili tary schools, Vance was commanding officer of the Communications Electron ics Engineering Agency in Thailand and subsequently commanded the 501st Signal Battalion, 101st Air borne Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam. Upon promo tion to Colonel, Vance was re-assigned to the U.S. Military Committee North Atlantic Treaty Organiza tion (NATO). It is there where he retired from the military with more than 30 years of service. During his military service, Colonel Vance received a total of 31 decorations and awards, including three Legion of Merit Medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star, two Air Medals, three Commenda tion Medals, and several service medals, including ten major campaign battle stars. He was a master and sky-diving parachutist who served on airborne (parachute) duty for 17 years. Colonel Vance declined attendance at the U.S. Army War College in 1973, and in 1975 began a civil ian career in Electronics Engineering in Europe for 11 more years as a team leader. Upon returning to the United States for retire ment, Colonel Vance was selected and entered the (OCS) Hall of Fame at the Infantry School in Fort Benning, Georgia. He was a lifetime member of the Officer Candidate School Alumni Association. The Veterans History Project interviewed Vance in 2012, and his video narrative resides at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Surviving Vance is his wife, Glenda Vance, and her family; his daughter, Denise Vance-Noelle and husband, Holger Noelle; daughter-in-law, Anne Vance; grandchildren: lain Vance and wife, Adela Vance, Eric Vance, Aidan Vance, Austin Vance; and great-grandson, Adrian Vance. Vance is preceded in death by his first wife, Elsbeth Helene Vance and their son, Gerhard Vance. A celebration of life will take place on Satur day, April 20th, at 2 pm at Christian Hill Baptist Church, 5865 Gailey Drive, Clermont, GA 30527. A fellowship meal will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the service hour on Sat urday, April 20th at the church.
