AS TO AOUINALDO.
A sketch of Aguinaldoin Review
of Reviews for February says that
the noted Filipino chief “looks
more like a European than a Ma
lay." His skull is well developed
for a European and abnormally
large for a Malay. His friends
and his enemies agree that he is
“intelligent, ambitious, far-sight
ed, brave, self-conceited, honest,
moral, vindictive and at times
cruel.” Those who like him say
he is polished, thoughtful, courte
ous. His enemies declare he is
vain, arrogant and insincere. He
is admitted by both to be capable,
popular and genial.
Aguiualdo claims to have been
born in the province of Cavite. It
was in this province that he was
first known. His friends say that
he was the son of a Spanish gener
al; his enemies that he was the off
spring of a dissolute Jesuit. At
the age of 4 he was a houße-boy in
the home of a Jesuit prießt in Ca
vite. His master was a very kind
man and he gave the boy an edu- *
cation, which, though uuequel to ;
what every child receives in the
|? United States, was a hundredfold
I better than what is bestowed upon
I the Tagals of Luzon. \Vh6n he
was 14 or 15 he was enrolled in
the medical department of the
pontificial university of Manila,
under Professors Nalda and Bui
trago. He was a bright student,
but nothing is known of his col
lege career.
When the revolution of 189(1
broke out Aguinaldo held a polit
ical position under a native poli
tician in a provincial town. He
was strong and popular in his ju
risdiction. When war between the
United States and Spain was de
clared he asserted that the oppor
tunity for freedom had come. He
made contracts to deliver urms in
the Philippines, and displayed
great personal activity in visiting

After Dewey’s great triumph
over the Spaniards at Manilla,,
Aguinaldo, followed soon by his
colleagues, crossed to Luzon and
organized the rebellion upon a
big scale. In nearly every one of
the twenty-six provinces of Luzon
he soon had she fires of rebellion
under headway. In each district
he picked out a loader, and for the
| capture of each Spanish force and
j garrison he outlined a rough plan
jof campaign. He seemed to exert
a strange fascination upon his peo
ple. Wherever he went lie was
followed by troops of admirers.
Nor was the feeling of more than
admiration confined totheTagals,
stolid Igorrotes, and half naked
Negritos: Cunning and skeptical
half-breeds, and even Spaniards
themselves, seemed to share in the
hero-worship. It was this stroDg
personal following that enabled
him to perform many extraordi
nary feats, such as sending m<-ssa
gos by runners who covered a hun
dred miles in two days, transport
ing experienced native soldiers
f nrtv and fifty miles within thir
ty-six hours so as to assail Span
ish garrisons and obtain their ri
fles, and finding out the treasur
es concealed by officials and friars.
None of these things could have
been done by an ordinary com
mander. To accomplish them de
manded intense emotion which ac
companies either patriotism or
strong personal loyalty.
In this man the United States
has a strong enemy. Of course he
cannot stand on the shores of the
sea and fight with battleships and
monitors, but when the American
troops advance, and when the Ta
gal chief retreats into the jungles
and mountain fastnesses, we will
have trouble enough with him.
We can crush him, but what of
the cost in treasure and blood?
It seems to us that we should
have been dealing candidly with
Aguinaldo two or three or four
months ago.—Macon Telegraph.

Ayer’s
Hair Vigor
Prevents Baldness
It supplies the requisite nourishment for the hair, and the hair grows. It restores the tone
of the scalp, and so induces the secretions of the follicles that the coloring matter is renewed and
fading hair regains its natural color, dandruff disappears, and the hair becomes thick and glossy.
Men and women whose abundant hair is the envy and admiration ot friends admit that they owe
it to Ayer’s Hair Vigor.
‘‘Last winter I discovered a bald spot on my head as large as a silver dollar. A few applications o*f Ayer’s Hair Vigor started
a healthy growth of hair, and in a short time the disappearance of the bald spot was a subject of wonderment to my friends anti
pleasure to myself.” A. M. ALLEN, No. 3116 Locust St., St. Louis, Mo.
“ I have used your Hair Vigor for a great many years and know of nothing equal to it as a hair dressing and restorer. It has
given satisfaction among my customers, who speak highly in its praise.”
A. E. FIELDS, Barber, No. 45 Princess St., Kingston, O.
“I am sixty-nine years old and have used Ayer’s Hair Vigor for fifteen years to prevent my hair from turning gray. It is an
excellent preparation for that purpose, and I shall always use it.” JOHN HECHTMAN, Osseo, Minn.
“I find Ayer’s Hair Vigor to be indispensable. My hair fell out for five years, but a few applications of the Vigor stopped
it. It gave the hair a beautiful glossy appearance, and I also found that it did not affect curling or crimping.”
M. E. SNYDER, Brantford, Ont.

The Kidney Complexion.
The pale, sallow, sunken-checked, dis

are afflicted with “Kidney Complexion.”
Their kidneys are turning to a parsnip
color. So is their complexion.
They may also have indigestion or suf

neuralgia, brain trouble, nervous exhaus

'y- L
The cause is weak, unhealthy kid

Usually the sufferer from kidney dis
ease does not find out what the trouble is
until it is almost too late, because the
first symptoms are so like mild sickness
that they do not think they need a medi
cine or a doctoi until they find themselves
sick in bed.
Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-Root will build up
