HEADACHE
is only a symptom—not a
disease. So are Backache,
Nervousness, Dizziness and the
Blues. They all come from an
unhealthy state of the. men

if you feel tired and languid in

lie in bed another hour or two
—if there is a bad taste in the
mouth, and no appetite —if
there is pain in the side, back

The Georgia Steate- F'aiir For 1899.
The Georgia State Fair for 1599 will he held in A tlanta, October 18tii to November Ith. The binlseye view shown
above is an actual reproduction of the fair grounds and buildings as they will la* used (l-.is fall. The floor space avail
able for exhibits in the several buildings is follows: Machinery and Manufactures building 68,000 sq. ft., Agricul
tural building 40,000 sq. ft.. Cattle. Sheep and Hogs building4B,6oo sq. ft., Poult i-y and Bet Stock building 14.900 sq. ft.,
Negroes’ building 51,000 sq.ft., Educational building‘JO,(XX) sq. ft., Hoad and Draught Slock building 26,000 sq. ft.,
Woman’s building 21,000 sq. ft.; total, 279.600 sq. ft.—equal to seven acres. This is more than three times the space
ever before devoted to a State Fair in the South. This means that the Slate Fair for 1899 lias been planned on an
extremely liberal scale The work of securing exhibits and attractions for the Fair lias now progressed sufficiently for
the management to feel absolutely confident of su cess. The prospects are that every department of the Fair will be
complete. Applications for space indicate that those who withold ‘their applications much longer will be shut out
altogether for lack of space. At least fifteen counties will compete for the splendid premiums offered for county ag
ricultural exhibits. There will be numerous entiles for the premiums offered for individual displays in this
department. The building devoted to machinery and manufactures will be filled to overflowing—although this will
be the largest building on the grounds. Practically every college in the State will make an exhibit in the Educational
department, and the prizes offered for oratorical and other contests will be comp ted for by a large number of boys
and girls throughout the State. The $50.00 prizes offered to Georgia boys under twenty years of age for the best ex
hibits of wood work and forged work have excited great interest throughout the State. The poultry and pet stock
department will be one of the special features of the Fair. The negroes will make a splendid showing. Six counties
have already applied for space in which to make county agricultural exhibits. The numerous prizesoffered for negroes’
work have created general interest among the colored people. $5,000.(X> have been appropriated for horse racing.
This will guarantee high class entertainment in this line. A railroad collision, a sham battle incorporating “Pickett’s
Charge at Gettysburg,” the Vitosoope, or moving pictures, and many other features of interest are being arranged
for. The premiums in all the departments aggregate $15,000.00. The prizes have been arranged with a special view
to encouraging agriculture and industry. In the Educational department the purpose has been to arrange contests
that would interest and benefit the boys and girls throughout the Slate. Premium list or other information regarding
the Fair will be supplied by T. H. Martin, Secretary, Prudential Building, Atlanta. Ga.

STOCK RAISINS
Kow Southern Farmers Can Enter Upon
a New Era of Prosperity.
When cotton planters cease to
devote all their energies to the
production of cotton and begin to
employ the waste places for the
production of beef by setting them
with Bermuda grass or Japan clo
ver, they will enter upon a new era
in their prosperity. No longer
with refrigerator cars at command
is there any risk in slaughtering
cattle in the south to be shipped
to all parts of the country, as is
now the case with the beef from
Kansas City and Chicago. Beef
cattle may be raisen fully 20 per
cent, cheaper iu the south than in
northern states. It will require
ten men to a herd of cattle in the
northwest during the stress of win
ter, when one man only would be
required in the south.
The most profitable methods
which could be employed-in the
south would be for every farmer
to carry a few well bred cattle on
his farm for milk, butter and beef.
The steers should be fattened for
market at the age of three or four
years. An average of four well fat
tened beeves sold each year from
every farm with 100 acres in cul
tivation would he a source of in
come to the people of the southern
states, besides adding to the fer
tility of the soil and making the
people independent of outside sup
plies. There is no good reason
why Buch a course should not he
entered upon at once by the far
mers and planters of tne southern
states. Wild glasses aud forage
crops enough ill the south spring
up aod blossom, fall aud decay,
which if converted into beef would
add millions of dollars to the
wealth of the country. The was
ted vegetable resources of the
south should be converted into
tangible wealth, and this may be
done with a maxium profit by the
raising of cattle, for cattle, next
to bread stuffs, are most univer
sally in demand at good prices.
Never before was tho demand for
good breeding stock better than it
is now. Raise good stock, not
scrub stock, and the profits will bo
certain and satisfactory. —South-
ern Magazine.

TO KICKEHS KVERYWHKKR.
Saint Peter sits by the heavonly Kate*,
Hi* hand* on the strings of a lyre,
And he sings a low song as he patiently waits
For the souls of those who expire.
He hears in the distance the chorus of eong
That swell from the foot of the heavenly
throne.
An<i he smiles as the music is wafted along
•And warbles a lay of his own:
•There is room in this region for millions of
souls.
Who by sorrow and woe were bereft:
’Tis for those who have suffered the melody
rolls.
But the kickers must turn to the left.
•‘There is room for the people who, when they
were young,
Persisted in sowing wild oats,
Yet who boomed up their town with sinew and
tongue.
But the kickers must go with the goats.
“There is room for the people who pointed with
pride
To the beauty and growtli 6f their town;
Who kept singing their praisos aloud till they
died,
But the kickers will please amble down.
“They’d say that the music was all out of tune
And the angelic robes ’hand-me-down.’
And they’d send for a jeweler off of the moon
To sample the gold in their crown.
“So, while there is room for a million of souls,
Who by sorrow’ and woe were bereft,
We want no complaint of the music that rolls,
So the kickers must turn to the left.”

Her muscles would draw admira

to be Btill in her teens. Recently
she attended a traveling show,
w here $lO was offered to any one

Jennie blinked her eyes at the
thought of the $lO, and sprang

Some Old-Fashioned Remedies.
Things which one should have
ready at hand in case of need are,
first and foremost, essence of cin
namon. When exposed in a sick
room it will kill the bacilla which
are floating round. A decoction of
cinnamon is recommended as a
driuk to be taken freely in locali
ties where malaria or fevers pre
vail. for cinnamon has the power
to destroy all infectious microbes.
Peppermint is ati old friend, but
not on this account to be suuhbod.
Nothing is better for the bee sting
than the application of a drop of
peppermint.
In case one is near the premises,
the simplest yet most effectual
mode of fumigating is to drop a
little sulphur on a hot stove, or on
a few hot coals carried through
the rooms. In this wav the spread
of the disease may be stopped.
A disinfectant to use in different
parts of the house, which will
sweeten the whole place, may be
made for 10 cents or less. Take
one pound of common copperas
aud eight ounces of crude carbolic
acid and dissolve in oue gallon of
water. Use frequently.
A little carbolic acid added to
the water in which burns, bruises
and cuts are washed greatly les
sens the soreness.
After applying iodine to the
skin, if it smarts too much to be
borne, it is well to know that it
can bo washed off with ammonia.
That there is a royal remedy for
sea-sickness oue is inclined to
doubt; but, shutting the eyes at
once when lying down in the cab
in, is a hint to the wise. Never
look in the opposite way to that
which the boat is going is an ex
cellent plan. Nibbling a dry bis
cuit or an apple from time to time
is recommended. French prunes,
figs and lettuce are good articles
of diet, and there is wonderful vir
tue in hot water, taken as hot as
hot can be, from time to time,
from the first day of the voyage to
the lust.
Deafness Cannot be Cured

There is only one way to cure Deafness

“Shall we stop our advertising
for awhile now 7”
This is a question that some
business men are apt to ask them
selves, particularly in the summer,
or during what they regard as their
“dull season.”
Suppose your enginoer asked
you: “Shall I stop putting coai
on my fires, sir ?”
What would you reply ?
“Why, no —unless you want your
engine to stop.”
The advertiser who thinks of
discontinuing may argue: “We
have been advertising so long and
so steadily that our name and spe
cialties are well-known, and we in
tend to advertise again when busi
ness is better in our line than it
appears to be now; in the mean
time our business won’t stop. ”
No, neither will the engine stop
the minute the men stop shoveling
in coal. The point is, however,
that when the engine is to be start
ed again, ten times as much will
have been lost in power as has
been saved in fuel or feed.
Using up reserve force never
pays.
It is a loss however it may be
looked at. The buying public is
proned to forget. It is, moreover
more difficult and much more ex
pensive to regain a lost customer
than to prevent his straying away.

Love Making of Owls.
Perchod on the same bough, or
the same wall of ruip, the lady
owl, though usually much bigger
and stronger than her mate, looks
the picture of demure coyness, if
a little excited inwardly, like a
girl at her first ball. But the
male owl is very much in earnest;
for a moment or two t|e remains
quite still, then ho puffs out all
his feathers, bows and utters a
softened scream, followed by a
modified hiss that is full of tender
meaning, and then he pudges her
with-his wing; she opens her big
eyes very wide and gives him a
sidelong glance that may he a hint,
for horrible to relate, from the
depths of his interior he instantly
brings up a half-digested mouse,
and although she is as full of sim
ilar rodents and stage beetles as
she can comfortably hold, she
opens her mouth and accepts the
fragrant gift with a murmur of
satisfaction that speaks volumes
of love and thanks. Then, when
the dainty morsel has been dis
posed of, they caress each other
tenderly for a moment or two and
then sit closely pressed to each
other’s side, after which they sim
ultaneously flit away into the
moonlight on noisless wing in
search of further prey. Not only
do the owls regard each other with
a devotion that is rarely met with
among more favored creatures,
they positively idolize their ill-fa
vored offspring, for whose sake
they would willingly risk not only
liberty, but life. A young owl is
not an attractive looking object
from our point of view, but in its
father’s aud mother’s eyes it is
perfection, and the way they wait
on it, cuddle aud caress it, feed it
and keep it clean must be seen to
be believed.

Regardless Of Age.
The kidneys are responsible for more
sickness, suffering, and deaths than
any other organs of the body.
A majority of the ills afflicting peo
ple today is traceable to kidney troub
le. It prevades all classes of society,
in all climates, regardless of age, sex or
condition.
The symptoms of kidney trouble are
unmistakable, such as rheumatism,
neuralgia, sleeplessness, pain or dull
ache in the back, a desire to urinate
often day or night, profuse or scanty
supply.
Uric acid, or brick-dust deposit in
urine are signs of clogged Kidneys,
causing poisoned and germ-filled
blood. Sometimes the heart acts bad
ly, and tube casts (wasting of the kid
neys) are found in the urine, which if
neglected will result in Bright’s Dis
ease, the most dangerous form of kid
ney trouble.
All these symptoms and conditions
are promptly removed under the influ
ence of Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-Root. It
lias a world wide reputation for its
wonderful cures of the most distressing
cases.
No one need be long without it as it
is so easy to get at any drug store at
