Hugh Spear, whose farm is near
Americus, brought in a genuine cu¬
riosity Tuesday in the shape of a
hunch of rats. There were ten of
the rodents and the strange feature
■was that their long tails were all
tied together in one big, inex¬
tricable knot. Mr. Spear found the
animals thus welded together in a
shuck pen and killed the whole lot,
carrying them to town with the ten
miils plaited in a hard knot, just as
he found them.—Albany Herald.

Commissioner Henderson, of Ir¬

for the county without additional
taxation by cutting the pay of jurors
one-half and reducing the salaries of
county officers,- including his own.
This is a good plan for the county.
It is a little rough on the jurors and
officers, hut they ought to have pa¬
triotism enough to help them pull
through. — Tifton Gazette. The
Gazette dropped the subject too
quick. It should have gone on and

From information received here
yesterday the belief obtains that
James Mehcgan, the ex-banker of
Abbeville, Ga., who broke jail in
Americus a week ago, has safely
reached his old home in Tarboro
N. C., where he was first arrested
upon the charges under which he
was indicted. The officers hero
trailed Mehogan and John far Ham, -
who escaped with him, as as
Hurtsbovo, Ala., where the scent
was lost. They now- believe that
Mehegan is safe among his friends
in North Carolina. -—'Americas

Two inddishly dressed ladies, one
quite blonde and the other dark and
statuesque, sat on the sunny side of
a Prytauia street cm* the other
morning and ate chocolate lozenges
out of a paper bag, says the New
Orleans Times-Demoerat. Between
times they chatted blithely.
“1 do wish,” said the blonde,
“that the newspapers would get
through printing all that stupid
stuff about Cuba and the Philip¬
pines^
Awfully tiresome, isn’t it,
dear?” assented her darker com
panion.
“Perfectly dreadful' and besides
it’s so confusing. 1 tried to read a
piece litis morning and . got till
mixed up. Do you know what they
mean by provisional government for
those folks in Cuba?”
“Why, certainly, dear,” replied
the brunette, brightly. “It’s a gov¬
ernment that gives them provis¬
ions.”
At this stage of th# conversation
a brute of a man who had been pre
tending to read a paper opposite
went out on the platform and
chuckled so boisterously that the
car nearly slipped its trolley. “Ho,
ho, he glllgled, ‘ they may oe oil
on all the rest, hut they’ve got that
provisional government proposition
down to a fine point, sure as blazes!”
LaCrippc Successfully Treated,
“I have just recovered from th«
second attack of la grippe this year,
says Mr. Jus. A. Jones, Mexia, Tex.
“In the latter case I used Cham¬
berlain’s Cough Remedy, and I
think with considerable success,
only being iu bed a little over two
days, against ten days for tho for¬
mer attack. Tho second attack I
am satisfied would have beep equally
as bad as tho first but for the use of
this remedy, as I had to go to bed
in about six hours after being
‘struck’ with it, while in the first
case I was able to attend to busi¬
ness about two days before getting
down.” For sale by Luke & Ashley.
Georgia’s Tax Burden.
*
The tax commission is all right,
and wo trust will succeed in bring¬
ing all property which has escaped
taxation to the light, but what the
people of Georgia want is the bulk
of taxation reduced. It is not so
much the question as to who pays
the taxes as it is the amount which
i* paid, for the people have it all to
pay anyway, and if some property
escapes, It only increases the rate
on what is led't. Of coftrse a few
individuals may save some dollars
by hiding their property from the
tax gatherer, but we believe if the
rate was not so high there would
naturally be less uiireturned prop¬
erty and a more general equaliza¬
tion of the taxation. Let the eom
mission go on with it* work, but in
the meantime let’s find some means
by which to lessen, as well as to
equalize, pniiulivn fbo tiie nmmint amount -or nf trCOlgia b
tax burden, and we would suggest
biennial sessions of the legislature
as one of the first steps in this di¬
rection.—Eastman Times-Journal.
