The Fitzgerald Leader has re¬
duced its subscription price from
$1.50 to $1.00. Like the Dispatch,
it is well worth $2.00 a year, but
the weeklies from the big daily of¬
fices have done the work on the
country weeklies.—Ocilla Dispatch.
Yet the Dispatch advocates taking
railroad passes away from the
country weeklies and bottling them
up at home, while the “big dailies,”
on a pass, canvass their 6wn terri¬
tory for subscriptions to their
■weekly.— 1 Tifton Gazette.
“Yet the Dispatch” advocates no
such thing. It would be glad to
see the pockets o£ every country
editor fairly bulge with railroad
passes; but it cannot condemn any
road for declining to make or renew
a contract it deems inimical to its
interests. That’s the whole thing
in a nutshell, and there is no need
for further liscussion.
The first of the editorial frater¬
nity to place tho “Misses Freeman”
on the exchange list was the Ocilla
Dispatch, edited by our papa’s old
friend, Mr. Hanlon. May bis path¬
way through future life be illumined
by the sunshine of prosperity and
happiness, unsurpassed only by the
brightness of the Dispatch. Please,
sir, send it to us at Wayoi’oss.—
Misses Agnes and Dollie Freeman,
in Waycross Department Douglas
Breeze. Many thanks. The Dis¬
patch will be sent as requested, even
if we have to go along to show it
the way.
Jim Freeman thinks the Way
cross Air-Line will be extended from
Douglas to Fitzgerald. Perhaps he
meant to say Ocilla.

ELDER MATTHEW SIKES,
Crowing Corn.
Editor Dispatch: I will make
my talk this week to my friends on
the farm; and as the corn crop is
first in importance and first to be
planted I devote thia*lett«r to it.
There is no crop that requires a
more thorough preparation of soil
than the corn crop. Its roots occu¬
py every foot—if not every inch—
of ground inside the field and that
portion of ground not prepared for
their easy access is not only useless
to the crop, but is an obstruction to
the progress of the young roots in
their search after food, for they can
neither bore through nor climb over
hard, unbroiccn ridges. It also pre¬
vents the rise of moisture from be¬
low and the uecoss&ry absorptions
from the air. Indeed, it prevents
the necessary equalization of chemi¬
cals through the soil, so vital to th^
healthy growth of all crops. I lin¬
ger at this point because it lies at
the root of successful farming. If
the farmer would go behind his
plows and remove the loose dirt he
would frequently find ridges from
two to four inched wide between the
furrows, so snugly covered by the
“Dixie” that the plowman himself
is not aware of it. Neglected prep¬
aration cannot be fully overcome by
any amount of after culture. And
the man who plants without it never
knows what his land would produce.
The old aiid common custom of
“throwing oil” from the old rows
and covering the hard ground in the
middle is a cheat. The farmer aims
to break that hard ground before
the corn roots get out there, but he
don’t do it. They are out there
before be is aware of it, and he gen¬
erally just about works his loose dirt
back to the com and leaves that
hard middle unbroken. Many far¬
mers will say, “I have always done
that and made good corn.” 1 an¬
swer, Yes, but if you had run your
first furrow down in the middle and
plowed around that, leaving your
last furrow in the old corn row, you
would have made more. Don’t you
recollect how your corn wilted and
twisted up during a few hot, dry
days in June? This was because
the hard ground would neither let
the moisture rise nor the roots go
down after it. If people would pre¬
pare their land thoroughly and not
plant too thick, there would be but
little cry about dry weather.
Meantime, we should keep always
in view one self-evident fact, viz.:
That just whore warmth from above
and moisture from below meet and
form a genial temperature is the
principal home and concentration of
corn rgots. Below this is too cool;
above it is too dry or warm. Bury
the grain or roots deep or shallow,
they will adjust themselves to this
temperature, nor will they make
much progress until they find it,
The farmer planted his corn down
in a deep furrow, throwing a hand¬
ful of cotton seed down on the
grain and filling the ditch by culti¬
vation to protect his corn against
drouth in summer. But in puliing
up a hill of corn to set a stack pole
he was surprised, to see that the
roots had climbed up from the low¬
er region and formed ’their entire
mass quite above his cotton seed.
Corn roots do not reed thebetter(?)
judgment of the farmer to dictate to
them where to rally—they settle this
question for themselves. And when
•the farmer is banking dirt three or
four inches deep around his young
corn he probably don’t think tliat
his corn will grow but little more
until it adjusts itself to its new sur¬
rounding. And if this banking is
done after the corn is bunching to
tassel the crop is hurt, the roots be
ihg cut on two sides and the others
buried below their wonted depth
and the corn too old for the roots
to adjust themselves.
